Darijo Srna Follows His Heart, Remains at Shakhtar

By 15 January 2017

Darijo Srna has made a decision to remain at Shakhtar Donetsk, deciding against a move to Barcelona, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on January 14, 2017.

Srna’s move to Barcelona has been long speculated ever since Dani Alves left the club and his replacement - Aleix Vidal - was not performing up to the expectations of the Spanish giant. For a final dance in Srna’s career, a year and a half contract with Barcelona sounded tempting at first glance, although finishing his career at his adopted Ukrainian home was too hard to pass.

While there were many reports on Srna’s offer from Barcelona, including the uncertainty about whether or not he would make the move to Camp Nou, Srna clears the air in an interview with Ukranian TV Channel 1 Football.

“I listened to my heart, and my heart belongs to Shakhtar, that’s what I have always said and that’s how it will be,” said Srna on the eve of Shakhtar's departure from Ukraine to the Spanish La Manga for their winter training camp.

“I listened to what my heart says, and it suggested to me that I should stay and win the championship. I made the right decision. As far as the interest of Barcelona I do not want to talk about it because it would be unprofessional. The most important thing is that I decided to stay at Shakhtar,” Srna concluded.

Srna made his move to Shakhtar in 2003 via Hajduk, wearing the shirt of the Ukrainian giant for nearly 14 years.
