Ana Konjuh didn’t make it to the 3rd round of the Australian Open in Melbourne, defeated by Australian Darija Gavrilova with 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 after two hours and three minutes of play
Croatian tennis player Mirjana Lučić-Baroni is now in round three of the Australian Open, defeating with 6-3, 6-2 the world’s third best player, Pole Agnieszka Radwanska in a duel that lasted two minutes longer than two hours, Jutarnji List reported on January 19, 2017.
Against last year’s semi-finalist in Melbourne, Lučić-Baroni, currently ranked 79th on the WTA list, played her standard aggressive tennis. This Thursday she managed to hit 33 winners and make 20 unforced errors, while the Polish player had eight winners and errors.
The duel began with three consecutive breaks, two for Lučić-Baroni, while she made her third break for the set point.
Radwanska went up 2-0 in the second set, followed by an unstoppable series of six games in a row for Lučić-Baroni who thus won the match.
This is the best score for the Croatian player at the Australian Open singles, having played in the second round back in 198, followed by seven losses in the first round.
Her next match is against the better player between French Alize Cornet and Greek Maria Sakkari.
The best Croatian female tennis player Ana Konjuh failed to make the third round, outplayed by Australian Darija Gavrilova. Konjuh started the match well, made the first break to go up 2-1, but then lost five games in a row.
The second set began with three consecutive breaks giving Konjuh a 2-1 advantage, holding on to the initiative and taking four more games to take the set with 6-1. The decisive part of the match began as the second set did, with three breaks, but Gavrilova came out on top with 2-1. There were no more breaks to follow, with the toughest battle in the eight game in which Konjuh had a chance to even the score at 4-4, but Gavrilova went on to win with 6-4.
