A First for Kovačić: Mateo's Goal and Assist Bring Victory to Real Madrid

By 30 January 2017

In the 20th round of La Liga, Real Madrid won with a convincing 3:0 score against Real Sociedad at home in Madrid.

Given that Luka Modrić is injured, Mateo Kovačić was given a chance from the first minute of this match, and he used his time well. It was clear that Real Madrid was struggling for the first 30 minutes of the half, failing to break the resistance of Sociedad...but that is until the Croatian national surprised us all, Vecernji List reports on January 29, 2017.

Ronaldo slipped the perfect ball to Kova, who then charged down the net and checkmated the goalkeeper, helping Real take the lead with 1:0. This was Mateo’s second goal of the season and further proof that his place at Madrid is more secure than ever.

After 51 minutes, Kovačić repaid Ronaldo, and played him the perfect through ball to assist the great goal by the Portuguese player - bringing Real's lead to 2:0. This is the first time since Kovačić arrived to Madrid that he accomplished both a goal and assist in the same game.

Real Madrid’s victory was later confirmed in the 82nd minute by Alvaro Morata who scored with a header to make the score 3:0 at the final whistle.

Zidane’s team had an opportunity in this match to take advantage of the draw between Barcelona and Seville to further strengthen their first position rank on the table, which was eventually successful. Real Madrid is in first place with 46 points, which is four points ahead of Barcelona and Seville. Real Madrid has also played one game less than both Barcelona and Seville.
