By 28 January 2018

Čilić and Federer faced off in the Australian Open final at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on January 28, 2018.

Croatia’s best tennis player Marin Čilić faced the greatest tennis player of all time in the Australian Open final this afternoon in Melbourne. The Swiss tennis star came out hunting for his 20th Gram Slam title at the age of 37 - and Federer, as expected, was the big favorite in the match.

In 38 degree Celsius weather, Federer took the first set in just 24-minutes, defeating Čilić 6:2 who made over 10 errors.

Marin, however, came back much stronger in the second set, winning 7:6 in a tie-break.

In an unbelievable back and forth match, Federer came back to win the third set 6:3, and in the fourth set, it was Čilić who came back from the dead to win it 6:3!

But Federer fared much better in the final set, and it would be the Swiss player to claim his 20th Grand Slam title of his career. Federer defeated the Croat in the fifth set 6:1.

Marin Čilić, regardless of this finals loss, will reach his best career ranking tomorrow - world number 3!
