Mario Cvitanović Out! Dinamo Coach Resigns After Shocking Defeat

By 10 March 2018

The match against Lokomotiva was the last for Mario Cvitanović at the Dinamo club.

Dinamo coach Mario Cvitanović resigned after the defeat to Lokomotiva this afternoon, which is yet another heavy defeat of the famous Zagreb club in just three days. If you recall, on Wednesday Dinamo lost to Rijeka 4:1, reports Gol.hr on March 10, 2018.

This is exactly what the former coach of Dinamo stated at the press conference where he offered his resignation.

"The situation is as it is, how the game was played today and my thinking about the future, and how to make the most out of the crisis. My responsibility for everything that has happened tells me to follow the first sentence I said when I came to coach Dinamo, and that is that honor and cheek are first in place. I will not give my honor and my cheek for absolutely anything and my moral obligation and my decision is definitive, that I have to depart.”

What happened?

"Because Dinamo won both the championship and the Cup, we tried to reset the players. I as a coach have to do this; it is the only correct decision at this time.”

Cvitanović suddenly became the coach of Dinamo shortly before the start of this season, succeeding Ivaylo Petev who had already gone through the preparations with the team. Under his leadership last summer, Dinamo, for the first time in 11 years, had been left out of play in any of the UEFA competitions.

Although falling to Skenderbeu was a real catastrophe, Cvitanović remained as the trainer and continued without dismissal. In the Croatian First League, Dinamo did not play well in most games, struggled, and suffered defeats thanks to individual mistakes and sometimes the help of officials. Still, Dinamo created a massive advantage in the championship over Hajduk, Rijeka and Osijek.

Cvitanović’s losing streak began with the defeat by Hajduk in the Maksimir derby. In the match, Dinamo met the Split club with +12 and could have already secured the title of the championship. This week alone, Dinamo allowed eight goals in the games against Rijeka and Lokomotiva. Hajduk is now just 6 points behind the Zagreb club.
