Petra Martić has advanced to the quarterfinal of the prestigious WTA tournament in Indian Wells after yet another impressive victory.
Petra Martić is in the quarterfinal of the so-called “fifth” Grand Slam tournament of the season - Indian Wells. With a score of 6:3, 7:6, Martić was better than the Czech tennis player Markéta Vondroušová, who she also defeated at the beginning of the year in Australia, reports Gol.hr on March 14, 2018.
Petra convincingly rolled through the first set, taking the service from her rival twice. Though she went 2:0 in the second, there were some minor problems for Petra.
Vondroušova returned a break from the back and slammed the confidence of the Croatian player. This was seen when the result was 5:3 and Martić served to win. Vondroušova had a break and even took the game to 6:5, serving to win the set. But Martić recovered, achieved a break and then played an excellent tie-break for 7:4.
Martić will play in the quarterfinals against Simona Halep’s, currently ranked the best female tennis player in the world, who was better than Wang Qiang with 7:5, 6:1.
Martić and Halep have played two matches against each other, recording one win for each.
The third best tennis player in the world, Croatia’s Marin Čilić, on the other hand, was knocked out by world no. 37 Phillip Kohlschreiber with a score of 4:6, 4:6. In the round of 16, Kohlschreiber once again proved fatal to Marin, and after the eleventh matchup between the two, the German records seven wins - not even in Indian Wells could Cilić manage to find a solution for Kohlschreiber’s game.
One break was enough for both sets - Čilić lost the service at 1-1 in the first, and 3-3 in the second set. The confused Marin had only five aces, two double faults and only 51 percent on his first service. Out of four breaks balls, Čilić did not win a single one, while the German had two and realized them both.
