Marin Čilić No Longer Third Best Tennis Player in World, and Will He Continue to Fall?

By 23 April 2018

Marin Čilić dropped one place in the latest ATP rankings, which could also happen again next Monday.

The best Croatian tennis player Marin Čilić fell one place in the most recent ATP rankings and is now the fourth best tennis player in the world. Borna Ćorić, Ivo Karlović and Viktor Galović, on the other hand, have all made progress, reports Gol.hr on April 23, 2018.

Though Čilić reached the quarters of the Monte Carlo Masters and defended last year's points, his first companion, Alexander Zverev, surpassed Čilić's 2017 points to overcome his third-placed ranking on the ladder. The German tennis player celebrated 210 points more than Čilić, while Grigor Dimitrov is immediately behind Marin by just 35 points.

If Dimitrov advances to the quarterfinals in Barcelona this week, Čilić will be the fifth best world tennis player in the world next Monday.

Borna Ćorić climbed one place, from 39th to 38th for his career best, as well as Ivo Karlović, who is now the 75th best player in the world. Viktor Galović also moved up to be the 181st best player in the world.

Spain's Rafael Nadal is the overall best in the world after winning the Masters’ tournament in Monte Carlo for the 11th time in his career, while Switzerland's Roger Federer, who will skip the entire clay season and return to play on grass in early June, is in second place.

It was also a week where the Fed Cup games did not make any significant changes on the WTA rankings, and this Monday, Croatia’s best female tennis player Petra Martić climbed from 37th to 36th place.

Donna Vekić held last week's 54th position, while Ana Konjuh fell one place and is now the 90th best tennis player in the world. Jana Fett and Mirjana Lučić Baroni have both moved up one spot - Fett is now the 108th best player in the world, and Lučić Baroni is 152nd.

There are no changes at the top - and in first is Romania's Simona Halep, followed by Danish player Caroline Wozniacki in second, and Spain's Garbine Muguruza in third.
