Croats in Roland Garros: Ćorić Out, Čilić in Round of 16

While Borna Ćorić had anything but a pleasant 3rd round Roland Garros match, Marin Čilić has advanced to the round of 16.

June 2, 2018 - Croatian tennis player Borna Ćorić was defeated in the round of 32 at Roland Garros by Argentinian player Diego Schwartzman with a score of 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. The game lasted two hours and 34 minutes.

Ćorić admitted defeat against Schwartzman, the 12th best tennis player in the world, who played much better overall and capitalized on Borna’s mistakes and weaknesses.

The first set did not see a break until the 11th game - and after losing the first set, Ćorić struggled to find a way to attack Schwartzman, losing his service twice in the second set. In the third, Schwartzman led 5-1. Ćorić was able to tighten the gap for 5-3, but saw his end in the next game.

Though Borna had more winners in the match (37-32), he made 52 unforced errors, which is exactly twice as much as Schwartzman. This was the third match between Ćorić and Schwartzman and the first loss of the Croatian player.

Marin Čilić, on the other hand, has advanced to the round of 16 at Roland Garros after defeating Steve Johnson 6:3, 6:2, 6:4.

Čilić did not have any problems advancing to the next round of the Grand Slam tournament, and from the first to the last minute of the match, the only resistance Marin faced was in the third set when Johnson equalized for 4:4.

Čilić awaits a difficult task against Fabio Fognini in the round of 16, who defeated Kyle Edmund earlier today.

So far, Fognini and Čilić have played three times, though the last time was in 2011. Čilić leads 2:1 in duels, but they have each secured one win on clay courts.

Mate Pavić and doubles partner Oliver Marach will play in the round of 16 tomorrow.
