Just a few days ago, Vedran Ćorluka bid an emotional farewell to the Croatia national team. Today, Mario Mandžukić has followed in his footsteps.
The 32-year-old Juventus attacker has said goodbye to the Croatia national team in another emotional address to the public, published on HNS on August 14, 2018.
“Dear fans,
I always liked to talk on the field rather than outside of it.
Therefore, these words come a bit harder than tackling an opponent or sprinting for 120 minutes. Harder, because I know how much joy all the gatherings, matches and victories bring me. Harder, because I know that listening to the national anthem before a game is the most emotional. Harder, because I know what honor it is to wear the Croatian jersey and represent your country. Harder, because I know that this is finally the end and after these words, there is no return.
Still, I know that it is the right time for these words...
I am retiring from the Croatia national team.
As much as the silver fills me with new energy, it has made it easier for me to make this impossible decision. We have experienced our dreams, made a historical achievement and felt the incredible love of fans. That month, as well as the welcome in Zagreb, Slavonski Brod and throughout Croatia, will remain the most important memory of my career. It was the most beautiful trip with the national team and the best return home. I am overjoyed, full, and to the heavens, I am proud of the silver we have fought for years, with a lot of passion, effort, labor, disappointment, and heavy moments.
There is no ideal time to go. If we could, I believe that we would all play for Croatia for as long as we live because there is no bigger pride. But, I feel that the time for me is now. When I have given the best of myself, and have contributed to the greatest success of Croatian football.
14 years ago, for the first time as a junior, I wore the holy jersey. Since then I met, played and worked with many excellent teammates, coaches, trainers and people around the national team. We all had the same goal - to give it all for the success of Croatia. I thank them all because, in some way, they left a mark on my career. On the road with me, they were always my closest friends, and I thank them for their great support.
And finally, thank you to the supporters.
None of us are perfect. I missed opportunities, lost the ball or made a bad pass.
But I always gave all of myself and left my heart on the field. Thank you for having recognized that and for being with me and the team.
From today, my place is with you - among the most prominent Croatian fans.
Mandžo loves you all.”
