Croats in Australian Open: Borna Ćorić Moves into Round of 16!

By 19 January 2019

22-year-old Zagreb-native Borna Ćorić has moved into the round of 16 of the Australian Open.

Croatia’s young tennis talent Borna Ćorić entered the 4th round of the Australian Open after defeating Serbian player Filip Krajinović 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. After two hours and 46 minutes, Ćorić reached the fourth round of the tournament for the first time in his career, reports Gol.hr on January 19, 2019.

After losing his service twice in the first set and not using either of the two breaks he had in two different games, Ćorić was not playing the game we knew he was capable of playing. After Krajinović broke Ćorić in the third and fifth games, the Serbian player won the first set 6-2.

One break was enough for Ćorić to win the second and third set. In the second set, he did it in the second game to win 6-3, and in the third set, he took the service of his rival in the seventh game to win 6-4.

Two early breaks helped Ćorić claim the victory in the fourth set and ultimately advance to the 4th round of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in his career.

Thus, Ćorić advancing to the fourth round of the Australian Open equalizes his best result at a Grand Slam tournament in his career. So far, he’s only had this success at last year’s US Open.

Ćorić's next rival will be the winner of French player Lucas Pouille and Australian Alexei Popyrin.

Unfortunately, Franko Škugor lost with his doubles partner Dominic Inglot to Frederik Nielson and Marcelo Demoliner on Saturday.

Nikola Mektić, Mate Pavić, and Franko Škugor will play in mixed doubles on Sunday in the round of 32.

Marin Čilić will play Bautista Agut in the round of 16 on Sunday.
