6th Jazz in February

For the sixth time this year, the Split City Puppet Theatre (CPT) organises a series of jazz concerts "Jazz in February", informs Splitski Portal. In the coming Saturdays (February 6 & 13 & 20) several great musicians will perform. For some, it will be their first performance at the CPT, while others are already quite popular Split guests.

One of them is Tamara Obrovac, who certainly managed to arouse the attention of the Split audience with her Transhistria Ensemble 2 years ago. She will open this year′s concerts with the Quartet - musicians, which created the album Ulika with her in 1998: Matija Dedić (piano), Žiga Golob (bass) and Krunoslav Levačić (drums).

The Ulika album introduced a new way of thinking and composing by this extraordinary author. For the first time, she connects the Istrian music and dialect with the universal jazz expression. The reunion of the quartet was in Grožnjan in 2011, with new creativity and a very different interpretation of old songs. Now, as experienced musicians, they reinterpret old compositions from a new, more mature artistic perspective. After a series of excellent concerts, Tamara obraovac Quartet will perform on February 6, 2016 at the Split City Puppet Theatre.

Next Saturday, February 13, 2016 a young, but widely recognized band Chui will perform. With their first two albums, this electro-jazz trio drew attention to themselves and gained a reputation at the Croatian and European jazz scene. They will promote their 3rd album in Split: Third Sun From the Stone, which was proclaimed by some renowned music critics as the album of the year and is the best-selling album in Croatia. For sure, Toni Starešinić (piano), Vojkan Jocić (saxophone) and Janko Novoselić (drums) will thrill the audience with their recognizable compound of jazz and modern dance music with a combination of electronic, funk, ambient music and rock´n´roll.

On Saturday, February 20, 2016 the last concert will take place. Aleksandar Dujin is the founder and the soul of the Aleksandar Dujin Quarter from Novi Sad, an orchestra, which has been playing for 18 years and has had more than forty musicians of various musical orientation and expression over the years. Along with Dujin, there will be Branimir Marković (bass guitar), Gabor Bunford Buga (saxophone) and Petar Radmilović (drums) performing in Split. They are excellent musicians, who fit perfectly into the concept called My Jazzway, made by Dujin as his original compositions created over 35 years, having  jazz as the basic musical expression. Regardless of the time of their creation, compositions, that will be performed at the CPT are managing to keep its spot and freshness even nowadays and will take the audience through three decades of creativity of this extraordinary pianist.

All three concerts will take place in Split City Puppet Theatre, starting at 20.00. Tickets can be booked at 021 395 986, or bought directly at the theatre on Tončićeva Street.

61st Split Summer Festival

It might be the Ultra Festival weekend these days. But soon Split will turn the page and become the main cultural spot in Croatia with its 61st Split Summer Festival.

The opening night is planned on Tuesday July 14, 2015 with the premiere of the opera Samson and Dalila by Camille Saint-Saensa at the Croatian National Theatre Split at 21:00. To make the evening even more glamorous an pre-event in front of the Theatre building "Šušur prid Teatron" with various performances by the members of the National Theatre Split will give us a taste of this year‘s festival program.

Within the next 32 days, there will be 52 performances in 19 locations by the members of the Split National Theatre and their guests with various opera, ballet, drama, concerts, exhibitions and musicals.

It is now the 3rd year, that I am following the Split Summer Festival, but sadly only by reading its program. Although the connection from Hvar to the mainland is fairly good during the summer, there is still no way I could visit any of the performances and return home as they all start around 9 pm. And of course they do. It‘s summer. During those long hot days, there is no way anything could start any sooner, especially when there are several outdoor performances planned, like at the Sustipan. I understand that, but still, I wish Split would be closer..
