ZAGREB, 23 May, 2021 - The Daruvarske Toplice spa in Daruvar, 140 km east of Zagreb, is the first tourism facility in Bjelovar-Bilogora County that has met all the criteria for providing specific services intended for cyclists and has gained the right to use a Bike & Bed Certificate.
This continental county has more than 400 kilometres of cycling trails and routes.
So far HRK 2 million has been invested in the development of cycling tourism, installation of info boards, development of the mobile application for cycling trails and routes, installation of solar stands for bicycle repair, and preparation of new trails.
One of the activities was also the development of the standard for bike & bed accommodation facilities, which includes provision of information on cycling trails, cycling guides, repair, rental and transport services, and various events.
The first Bike & Bed Certificate has been awarded to Daruvarske Toplice hospital for medical rehabilitation and a dozen more are expected to be awarded in Bjelovar-Bilogora County in the coming period.

April 30, 2021 - After a great start with their learning-by-cycling app, a Bikademy virtual loyalty card with discounts on bicycles and parts is now available for its users.
Hrturizam.hr reports that a Bikademy virtual loyalty card has been announced by its creators who, through a strategic partnership with the Giant cycling store, will offer discounts and offers for the Bikademy students.
The only step that users have to take is to register on the Bikademy app, which is available in both Google Play and the Apple App Store. ‘‘Once installed, you will find in the upper right corner of the Index your virtual card with which you will have additional benefits from our partners. And the first partner is Bikademy sponsor: Giant Croatia! When you buy in the Giant Store, you must show your Bikademy virtual loyalty card with the code, and the following benefits are provided: -10% on Giant Liv bikes, -20% on Giant Liv accessories -5% on Maxxis tires and tubes, Shimano, Salomon, BikeWorkx, Endura, Basil and a complete range of other brands and brands”, says Krešimir Herceg from Bikademy.
Credit: Ivan Vuksa (Pixabay)
The Bikademy app was launched as an interesting concept that shows destinations through studies, consisting of natural and cultural heritage sites, representing the Bikademy Exams. Ideal for exploring the entire destination and connecting with tourist attractions and entities.
It promotes micro-regions (cities and regions) as desirable cycling tourist destinations in an interactive, educational and fun way. The basis of this product is a platform with fields of studies that represent certain regions or cities. Each study has its own exams (locations). Exams are passed when a user, also called Bike Student, visits that location with their bicycle and takes a selfie at the location.
For users to pass any exam, they shall first register if they are new users (Bike Student). Their tasks are visiting locations (also known as the exams) of certain studies, by bicycle. They have to take a selfie with their bikes at that location through the app (GPS and data have to be turned on). After passing every exam of a certain study, they will be rewarded. There is no order to pass the exams, as they can be taken randomly.
“Many thanks to Giant Croatia for its great long-term support to the entire project. We certainly plan to introduce other partners who are primarily in the world of cycling, and then cycling as a sport. We will continue to build this story so that our customers can have even more benefits’’, stated Herceg.
The platform is primarily intended for an increasing number of cyclists, both foreigners visiting our country and domestic, and thus can serve as an excellent tool and added value in the tourist offer of destinations. How to extend the tourist season? By creating quality content, especially in the post-corona era where the focus is on active and sustainable tourism.
Currently, Bikademy has ten exams or studies in Croatia and one in Berlin, and soon Bikademy will be implemented in Šibenik as well. ‘‘We just found out how the project passed us in a tender of the Ministry of Tourism which will make several trainings on the use of the Bikademy application and concept, and we will open a new study: the region of Sibenik. I hope that we will soon come out with more concrete information and details’’, concludes Herceg.

March 21, 2021 - 80 electric bikes on Krk Island can be enjoyed by locals and tourists from April 1, 2021!
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates that there are currently more than 60 million active cyclists in Europe, and cycling tourism is one of the most promising backbones of active tourism. On the island of Krk, cycling tourism was completed through the KrkBike project, which is extremely important for raising the quality of life on the island, both for foreign tourists and locals, developing the tourist economy, and branding the island of Krk as an eco-destination. On the island of Krk, there are over 300 kilometers of manicured bike trails, reports HRTurizam.
Two years ago, the Krk Tourist Board, in cooperation with all tourist boards on the island, developed mobile applications KRKhike and KRKbike, which allows you to search for hiking and mountaineering trails as well as GPS navigation routes. A training program for bicycle guides was also recently held on the island of Krk.
But cycling is much more than bike paths, and in the past 5 and more years, there is a strong demand for electric bicycles, public bicycle systems, and scooters, as well as stations for charging electric cars through sustainable tourism.
Thus, in Krk town and all Krk municipalities, bicycle rental stations have been built, consisting of a control cabinet, 10 stands with electric bicycles and a bench for charging laptops and mobile phones, and repairing bicycles.
The e-bike rental systems of all local government units are networked so that the e-bike can be rented at one location and returned to another location. The advantage of such a concept is the connection of the entire area of the island and the networking of municipalities and Krk into one whole, just as it was done with the project of electromobility through electric cars.
Currently, about 80 electric bicycles are available on the island of Krk. The public rental system of electric bicycles on Krk Island will be active from April 1, 2021, if epidemiological conditions allow it.
“Cycling tourism on the island of Krk, along with summer vacation tourism, is becoming our main tourist product. Destinations that offer opportunities for active holidays attract guests throughout the year, and guests get to know both natural and cultural sights in the destinations, which promotes sustainability," said Ivana Kovačić, director of the Krk Tourist Board.
The KRK BIKE system has been established at nine locations-stations on the island of Krk: Baška, Dobrinj (Klimno), Krk, Malinska-Dubašnica, Omišalj (center), Omišalj (Njivice), Punat, Punat (Stara Baška), and Vrbnik, covering most of the island.
"In the town of Krk, we have one station consisting of 10 electric bicycles, benches with sockets for charging mobile phones, laptops, and electric bicycles that are out of the system, i.e., electric bicycles for casual passers-by. There is also a stand with a bike repair tool and an electric compressor to inflate the tires. A 17-screen control panel where advertisements and announcements of tourist events can be displayed," Kovačić points out, adding that currently, all tourist boards are involved in the stronger promotion of these contents, as well as informing all stakeholders about the possibilities of use.
"Due to the uncertain start of the tourist season, conditioned by the coronavirus pandemic and the further sequence of events, this year we are working more intensively to make the system even better," says Kovačić.
The system was installed in 2020 under the jurisdiction of the company Ponikve eko otok Krk d.o.o. and is easy to use. It only takes three steps to activate the service (registration, payment, and QR code scanning). It is important to point out that there is support for the system through the dispatch center, provided 24/7. A person on duty to help on the road, daily inspection and tour of all stations, returning bicycles to the stands, and possible repairs.
Despite last year's worse tourist season, there were about 3,000 rentals on the island of Krk from May to October. The rental price is 20 kn / hour, and the electric bike can be rented from 0 to 24 hours.
Find out more information about electric bicycles on Krk island HERE.

On the river Bednja, which flows through the very center of Ludbreg, the forces were measured by different types of rowers in several categories. January 24, 2021 – Cycling tourism in Istria has long been recognised as a niche that can enrich the overall tourist offer, extend the pre and post-season, and be an additional motive for guests exploring new destinations on two wheels. To further improve and develop cycling tourism, Istria County is preparing a Study on the quality management of cycling tourism development.
"With this study, we want to get the data we need for the quality management of the development of this product at the destination level. We want to find out how users and service providers in cycling tourism perceive this tourist product, what motivates visitors to come, product satisfaction, and what facilities are missing," explains the head of tourism in Istria County, Nada Prodan Mraković.
The Study includes users and the local population's opinions and monitors cycling tourism's impact on other activities and society.
The study's value stands at 187,500 kuna, of which 150,000 kuna was approved from the Tourism Development Fund of the Ministry of Tourism and Sport. The Institute of Agriculture and Tourism in Poreč will prepare the study, which is expected to be completed this June.
When it comes to cycling tourism, the Parenzana bike-hiking trail is indispensable. In the past five years, Istria County, local self-government units, and the Ministry of Tourism invested 3,388,000 kuna in Parenzana's arrangement, maintenance, and promotion.
Photo: Facebook Parenzana
In 2020, for example, a new lookout Brkač and protective wooden fences were installed on the Grožnjan bridge and the Pirelići overpass to increase the safety of drivers and pedestrians. Investments were made in lighting the Kalcini tunnel and general regular maintenance of the route (mowing, landscaping) was undertaken.
In cooperation with Hrvatske šume (Croatian forests), trees were planted on the rest areas and lookouts of Brkač and Rakotule. At the end of the year, for the first time, ten short videos of 15 seconds each were made to promote Parenzana.
In 2021, the emphasis will be placed on the maintenance of drainage canals, of which there are about fifty on Parenzana. Besides that, regular mowing and the upkeep of signposts, info tables, lookouts, WiFi points, and the promotional campaign on social media will continue.
The plan is also to shoot a dozen more short videos that would show off the additional content at Parenzana (gastronomy, cultural content). These activities will undoubtedly further improve but also popularise the former narrow-gauge railway which used to connect the ports of Trieste and Poreč during the 20th century. Its attractiveness is evidenced by the data on over 260,000 visitors in the past three years alone.

September the 30th, 2020 - When it comes to cycling, walking, mountaineering and hiking in Croatia, the possibilities are endless thanks to the extremely diverse terrain in such a small geographical area. Peljesac might be best known for its abundance of wildly popular wines and its picturesque vineyards descending down its rugged hills, but there is another attraction - the very many Peljesac cycling and hiking routes.
The Peljesac peninsula is ideally placed, especially when it comes to tourists staying in Dubrovnik who might want a break from the hustle and bustle of the small Medieval walled city in the height of summer. Getting back to nature is important for both physical and mental health, and Peljesac cycling paths are an ideal place to visit when you need to blow off the cobwebs while being surrounded by beauty on all sides. Whether it's hiking, walking, cycling or tackling mountains that is your thing, this region of Dalmatia should definitely be on your list of places to go.
As Morski writes on the 29th of September, 2020, Dubrovnik-Neretva County, through the Ministry of Tourism, provided co-financing for the project of renovating and properly laying out the Peljesac cycling and hiking paths in the area of the popular municipalities of Orebic and Trpanj.
The project will arrange and mark over 40 kilometres of macadam paths and build four new lookouts along the Peljesac cycling and hiking routes. The works are being carried out within the Cyclotourism Development Programme in the wider area of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The total value of the works of this project stand at 602,000 kuna, and the works on its realisation have already started. Within the project, the county will participate with as much as 202,000 kuna, the Municipality of Orebic will throw in 340,000 kuna, and the Municipality of Trpanj will volunteer 60,000 kuna of its own funds.
The works on the Peljesac cycling and hiking routes should be completed by December this year, which will further enrich the tourist offer in this part of Dalmatia, which is otherwise, as mentioned, already well known for its rich active tourism offer.

The center of the world (yes, that's the real thing!)
Cycle to the very center of the world! The magical Ludbreg is known as the world's official center, so start by conquering it by bike. Eighty kilometers long, the trail follows the Drava River through a series of picturesque villages and hamlets located in the Drava lowlands.

If you are a river fan, this one is for you
Do you want your ride to be accompanied by water? Continental Croatia is rich in rivers, and the roads that stretch along them offer perfect trails for more experienced road racers. Start from Varazdin or Cakovec and drive along the Drava River and the Mura estuary towards Koprivnica, Pitomaca, Virovitica, Valpovo, Osijek, all the way to Vukovar in eastern Croatia. It is more than 300 kilometers along the rapids of the river Drava. If you don’t know where to go, do what Bear Grylls does - follow the river!

Cycling around waterfalls? You got it!
There is no greater symbol of the beauty of Croatian nature than Plitvice Lakes, which bears the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site and is visited by more than a million people every year. However, few do so by bicycle. Around the Plitvice Lakes National Park, there are beautifully landscaped bike paths of all levels of difficulty, and many take you to areas of this park that are far from the reach of other tourists. Want to have a day to remember? Start from Karlovac and drive about seventy kilometers along the old mountain road towards Josipdol. Well, that's a real challenge!

Do you like fairytales? Trakoscan awaits for you!
If you are looking for your prince or princess, take a peek at the castle! This gem, located along the border of Croatia and Slovenia, is called Trakoscan. It is one of the most important Croatian castles, and equally attracts tourists and cyclists. Who knows, maybe among them you will find the "right one". If you are not interested in fairy tales about princes and princesses and you are looking for an ordinary man with traditional skills, there is no better place than Krapina, where the magnificent Museum of Krapina Neanderthals is located. The popular circular path that leads to the castle begins and ends in Djurmanac, and includes a 38-kilometer drive along the Macelj mountain, at an altitude of approximately 380 meters.

Head to the Medvednica Nature Park, only twenty minutes away from Zagreb. Not far from the hustle and bustle of Zagreb, with an altitude of up to 1000 meters, this place is a paradise for cyclists eager for adventure, whether it is road or mountain biking. It’s a real challenge when you have to climb an hour and a half by bike to the top of the mountain to get down to the base in fifteen minutes. The adrenaline will rush through your veins as you ride the Medvednica bike trails - because they are truly breathtaking!

The golden route, rich with wine
The smallest and northernmost Croatian county is known for washing gold, and there is the first oil field in Croatia (and the world!). Medjimurje offers many top bike trails that stretch throughout the county, and this region is also known for the production of top wines. With a concept that combines the pleasure of wine and the pleasure of cycling, visitors have the opportunity to experience the two main attractions of Medjimurje at once.

As Marta Duic/Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 27th of June, 2020, Friday, June the 12th marked the sixth day since Mike Saran, otherwise the owner of the popular Le Meridien Lav hotel in Split, left Prague and covered more than 700 kilometres through the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovenia on his bicycle. He eventually arrived here in Croatia.
In addition to owning the aforementioned hotel, Mike Saran is also the founder of the Sport2Life foundation.
''Before the trip, I studied various possibilities and chose the route that I thought would be the safest and most interesting. I wasn't wrong. And in addition to knowing that we were going to drive through the Czech plains and the Austrian Alps, it was raining all the time through Austria. However, I was most looking forward to coming to the Croatian border and entering Croatia.
Crossing the border was fast, I announced my arrival via the Enter Croatia application and there were no difficulties. I visited all the destinations I'd planned - Trakošćan Castle, I stopped in Zagreb, then Slunj and the Rastoke waterfalls, Plitvice Lakes, Krk, Trogir, Šibenik… I wanted to visit destinations in Croatia that I'd not been to before, and about which I'd read and heard so much about so many times. I succeeded in that, and I was especially impressed by Plitvice Lakes.
It’s an amazing wonder of nature, I knew they were beautiful and worth visiting, I'd heard about them and I'd seen the photos, but I couldn’t even imagine in my dreams how beautiful they really were. But most of all, I was looking forward to the hospitality of the local people I met on the trip and it was exactly as I imagined - friendly,'' the Le Meridien Lav owner stated in sharing his first impressions from the trip to Croatia.
The project was also supported by the Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ)
Before continuing his journey down to Split, he stopped in Zagreb to once again tell the story and goal of his cycling adventure and meet some friends, the celebrated volleyball player and ambassador of the Sport2Life Foundation, Senna Ušić Jogunica, retired water polo player Dubravko Šimenc, representatives of the Czech Embassy in Croatia and partners from Croatia.
"Split is my second home and I had to find a way to get there in these challenging times. I've missed it immensely over the past few months. I was pleased with the information that the borders were opening, but there were still no flights, so I decided to go by bike at that moment. My wish was to present to everyone how beautiful Croatia is.
Come to Croatia, it's safe and beautiful here - that was my message and the goal of my challenge. Croatia, and especially Dalmatia, offer everything a modern tourist could want at the moment - it's a beautiful destination with a preserved coast, you can visit it by car, bicycle, you can enjoy the sea or the mountains, it's full of excellent locations for adrenaline junkies, has an excellent gastronomic and hotel offer, is located in the heart of Europe and is a very safe destination that has successfully defended itself against a global pandemic.
I'm glad that the Croatian Tourist Board, especially through its representative office in the Czech Republic, recognised the interest, but also the importance of this project for Croatia because in these times we have to stick together, we all have the same goal - to make the tourist season as successful as possible,'' explained the Le Meridien Lav owner.
In addition, says Saran, he wanted to inspire parents and children to be more active, to enjoy the outdoors and the nature, to play sports, which is the main goal of his foundation Sport2Life. Accompanied by a friend and fellow cyclist Tomaš Grim, he covered a distance of 720 kilometres through the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia to Zagreb, and then another 580 kilometres in which he visited Karlovac, Rastoke, Plitvice Lakes, the Gacka Valley, Krk and Skradin, Šibenik and Trogir. He shared all this and the beauty he saw along the way on social media using the hashtags #MikeChallenge and #CycleYourDreams.
''Basically, throughout the trip, there were three of us who were constant companions. My friend and professional Czech cyclist Tomaš Grim was with me the whole time. The original plan was to follow me to the Czech-Austrian border, but he liked it so much that he decided to continue with me until the end, to Split. We were accompanied on the trip by a technician.
Namely, on the trip I had three different bikes - one for riding on the road and on the flat and two mountain bikes. The bikes and all the technical equipment travelled in a vehicle, a camper that we met at pre-arranged destinations. The camper was great, especially through Austria where we were sheltered from the rain when it got really strong.
I always had enough groceries with me to get from one point to another. During the trip, some of my friends and partners of the Sport2Life Foundation joined me on certain routes. It isn't my intention to end this journey as a normal point to point bike ride.
I want to take advantage of every moment of this journey and enjoy this challenge, the landscapes, the environment we're moveing through, the whole experience. This is by no means just a physical challenge, although I have to admit that it is hard to cycle eight to nine hours a day because I'm not a cyclist, but this is above all an amazing journey with many beautiful discoveries. And my intention is to share all that beauty with others,'' Saran pointed out.
A challenging year ahead
As the Le Meridien Lav owner says, he has been doing business in Croatia for several years and every time he finds something that makes him happy again - from adventurous challenges, to the nature to the hospitality of people. Le Meridien Lav resort opened on June the 15th, the day Saran arrived in Split, officially starting the 2020 summer season.
''This will be a very challenging season and year, but we've taken appropriate and responsible steps in our business. It's important to say that in Split we have an excellent team and top employees who are with us during these challenging times. Whether small or large, challenges are an inevitable part of our daily work so we have no choice but to be ready to respond to them properly and quickly.
Our team at the hotel did an amazing job adopting all the new procedures through additional training, and in order to successfully adapt our employees and our guests to the new normal situation. It's still too early to estimate how the season will develop as this includes many factors that we at Le Meridien Lav cannot influence such as flights, border restrictions and the like. We believe that after the first half of July, the situation for this year will be a bit clearer and that we'll eventually see some positive changes,'' believes Saran.
So far, the most numerous guests of Le Meridien Lav resort were from North America and Western Europe - British, Dutch, Germans, Scandinavians… As Saran says, this season they expect the largest number of guests from Croatia and European countries, and all other arrivals will depend opening European borders, introducing flights and so on.

As Morski writes on the 20th of May, 2020, in the twenty months since their opening, the 470 kilometres of well-maintained cycling routes in NP Krka, which pass through the untouched nature surrounding the most beautiful part of the Krka river, have become a favourite destination for lovers of active holidays.
The most scenic parts of NP Krka are connected by as many as fourteen circular bicycle routes of different levels of difficulty with appropriate cycling signals, and the ideal combination of different terrain configurations and rich natural and cultural heritage allows for the discovery of this beloved Croatian national park in a completely different and sustainable way.
Whether you're a beginner, recreational cyclist or a professional - five MTB or mountain bike routes, three road routes and six track routes for a pleasant family ride, will satisfy different adventurous needs and abilities. The most willing adventurers will more than likely dare to embark on the longest bike route, the so-called "royal route", which is 95.1 kilometres long and begins in picturesque Skradin, passes through the settlements of Rupe and Kistanje, and ends in a true pearl of ancient history, the Roman military camp of Burnum.
On the way back to Skradin, it descends twice into the beautiful Krka river canyon, to the Brljan and Roški waterfalls (slapovi), and after passing the visitor centre in Laškovica, which is the centre of a network of hiking trails and cycling routes along the river Krka, returns once again back to Skradin. The shortest cycling route, which is 8.6 kilometres long, runs from Skradin along the Krka river and leads upstream to Skradinski buk, the most beautiful and most heavily frequented waterfall along the river Krka.
The ability to cycle at NP Krka works to further strengthen the potential for the development of cycling tourism in the much loved park, as it represents a much more sustainable type of tourism that has a number of advantages to it - from individual ones such as a positive impact on health and fitness, to broader ones concerning the impact on local economic activities. At the same time, biking and trekking have a negligible impact on the environment, which is extremely important since the routes are located in the protected nature of the park,'' stated the director of NP Krka's Public Institution, Nella Slavica.
''In addition to offering an excellent opportunity to get better acquainted with the natural beauty that you didn't even know existed, our cycling routes also play a more educational role because they reveal the hidden treasures of the rich cultural and historical heritage preserved by NP Krka,'' concluded Slavica.
In the period until June the 18th, 2020, a promotional ticket price of just fifty kuna for adults and 25 kuna for children is on offer for all visitors to NP Krka, while admission is free for the youngest visitors.
