ZAGREB, 15 May 2022 - After last year's exhibition of works by Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, this summer the Juraj Šporer Gallery in the northern Adriatic town of Opatija will display works by Salvador Dalí.

The exhibition will be staged in collaboration with the Opatija Festival and the OPL Art company and will be open from 6 June to 20 September. Admission will be HRK 100 (€13).

On display will be about a hundred lithographs, copperplate engravings and other graphic works from a private collection of a collector from Bonn, IPL Art director Iva Piglić announced earlier this week, adding that she could not reveal the collector's name because they wanted to remain anonymous.

Opatija Festival director Ernie Gigante Dešković said that these exhibits, being from a private collection, were rarely displayed and that this would be a rare opportunity to see them.

He said that the exhibition of works by Picasso and Miró was among the most visited exhibitions in Croatia last year and that they hoped to surpass that result with the Dalí exhibition.

ZAGREB, 1 Feb 2022 - The travelling exhibition called "Memory of Nations" about 12 people who survived the periods of large-scale displacements and changes of borders in the wake of the Second World War was staged in Zagreb on Tuesday.

The multilingual and multimedia exhibition, staged on a truck, is staying near the Trg Francuske Republike Square until 21 February. After Zagreb, the next stops are Dresden, Wrocław and Prague. It was already staged in Bratislava.

The exhibition, prepared as part of a project called "Inconvenient Mobility" by associations from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Slovakia, brings stories and experiences of individuals who migrated after the Second World War due to changes of borders, political decisions, and the war and post-war legacy.

The Croatian NGO included in this project is Documenta, which has done five interviews with witnesses who speak about the migrations of local Italians in Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia.

The other stories in the exhibition are about displaced persons from Germany, Slovakia, Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine, said Documenta leader Vesna Teršelič today in Zagreb.

ZAGREB, 27 Aug 2021 - A travelling exhibition on Yugoslav monument art opened at Zagreb's Miroslav Kraljević Gallery on Thursday.

Entitled "Architecture. Sculpture. Memory. The art of monuments of Yugoslavia 1945–1991", the exhibition, featuring photos of 33 monuments or memorial complexes from the former Yugoslavia, premiered at the Dessa Gallery in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 2020.

"In the architecture and art of ex-Yugoslavia, the monuments to the victims of the People's Liberation War stand out," the Miroslav Kraljević Gallery said.

The authors of those monuments were renowned Yugoslav architects, urbanists and sculptors such as  Bogdan Bogdanović, Edvard Ravnikar, Vojin Bakić, Dušan Džamonja and Zdenko Kolacio.

Instead of the regime's symbolism, their creations combined the present, the past, mystique, geometry, archetypal symbols and new materials, architecture and spatial poetics, the historical aura of locations and new forms of communication with viewers, the gallery said.

"From the perspective of monument art after World War II, Yugoslav monuments are among the most impressive accomplishments."

Before Zagreb, the exhibition was staged in the Istrian town of Novigrad.

The exhibition was conceived and organised by Boštjan Bugarič, Kristina Dešman, Maja Ivanič, Špela Kuhar, Eva Mavsar, Špela Nardoni Kovač and Damjana Zaviršek Hudnik.

The Zagreb exhibition is open until 17 September, after which it moves to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

April 4, 2021- Following the 50th anniversary of the death of Većeslav Holjevac, the Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition on the former and historically significant mayor is an excellent opportunity to meet the guy who shaped Zagreb in the previous century.

Apart from the horror of the pandemic and earthquakes, 2020 was the 50th anniversary of the death of Većeslav Holjevac – who is considered to be one of the greatest mayors in Zagreb's history.

As ZG Portal reports, last month an exhibition dedicated to Holjevac started in the gallery of the Museum of Contemporary art, and you can view it until May 20.
The Zagreb of Većeslav Holjevac 1952 to 1963 – Urbanist Vision And Architectural Reach is an exhibition that takes a look at the eleven-year mandate of this significant mayor who transformed Zagreb in the post World War 2 era. Fifty themes and representative examples of urban and architectural achievements which were built, projected, or planned in Holjevac's term. This included three key Strategic urbanistic documents which played a key role in the development of Zagreb and were decided at that time.

The authors of the exhibition are architect Ivan Mlinar which conducted Urbanistic research on Zagreb in the time of Holjevac, and historian Hrvoje Klasić who was in charge of biographical research.

The exhibits were donated by the Museum of Contemporary Arts, Zagreb City Museum, Architecture Museum of Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Faculty of Architecture on Zagreb University, Jadran Film, and Zagreb film studio.

The 35th Zagreb mayor and the total number of mayors in Zagreb throughout its history includes 52 names. Today, Većeslav Holjevac has his own avenue at the entrance to Most Slobode (Liberty bridge), which allows citizens to cross the Sava river and enter Novi Zagreb (New Zagreb), and the statue of Holjevac overlooks the area of Zagreb he built in what is commonly known as „Jump Over Sava“.

Apart from being mayor, Holjevac took various different roles in the former Republic of Yugoslavia. Known as a bold person with vision, competence, and bravery, he made Zagreb one of the most developed cities in Yugoslavia, and despite having various rivals, he enjoyed the support of Yugoslavian president Marshall Josip Broz Tito, which allowed him to make his projects a reality.

September 27, 2020 - From Monday, September 28, the citizens of Split will have the opportunity to see the exhibition '100 Years of Jadran'.

As Slobodna Dalmacija reports, the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of this water polo and swimming club, an exhibition that chronologically follows the tradition of the swimming and water polo club Jadran will be opened in the Photo Gallery of the Photo Club Split at 7 pm, from the very beginning until today.

"The photos will remind us of the days of the founding of Jadran, the construction of homes, swimming pools on Zvončac, the two biggest sporting successes of the water polo club, two European titles and swimming legends of Jadran, well-known male and female faces who marked Jadran swimming feats. The photos will remind us of recent history, of two Olympian swimmers thanks to whom Jadran is writing a new history today and renovating its 'home' ", it is stated in the announcement.

By the way, Jadran was founded on September 23, 1920, in Baluni Bay on the west side of the port of Split.

"The initiative was launched at the constituent session of the Maritime Sports Association Baluni. The first president was Frane Aljinović, and on July 24, 1921, the club officially opened the doors of its 'home'. The first public match after the First World War was played on July 30, 1922, at the first Sub-Federal Championship in water polo and swimming in which the Baluni team defeated Firule 5: 1", they recall from the Photo Club Split.

Not everything went smoothly for Jadran. Their home was destroyed in a fire twice, the first time in 1925 and again exactly ten years later.

"On the night between April 20 and 21, 1935, the clubhouse burned down again and it was decided to build a new one in the neighboring Zvončac bay. During 1936, eight cabins were built, a swimming pool was excavated, a wall was erected towards the cemetery, showers were installed, a water installation was arranged, and temporary grandstands were built. With coach Neven Kovačević, the Jadran team became the champion of Yugoslavia in 1991, at the last championship in which Croatian clubs participated", it is stated in the announcement.

Jadran has twice won the title of European champion, and as many as nineteen times they have been national champions.

An exhibition '100 years of Jadran' on the club’s rich history will remain open until October 7th.

August 23, 2020 - The Archaeological Museum in Split is the oldest in Croatia and Southeastern Europe. Established in 1820, the museum initially didn't have its building, but the items were placed in rented warehouses. Dr. Karlo Lanza was appointed the first director, but the Golden Age of the Archaeological Museum and Archeology, in general, began in 1884 with the appointment of Don Frane Bulić, the father of Croatian archeology. 

Today the Museum has tens of thousands of different archaeological objects, sorted by historical periods and localities. The Archaeological Museum has a significant library and archive fund, and since 1878 it has been the publisher of the oldest archaeological journal "Journal of Dalmatian Archeology and History".

In addition to collecting, processing and presenting archaeological material and monuments, the Museum conducts systematic archaeological research at the sites in Salona and Issa, and has a handy collection at the site of Salona, ​​with a building in Solin - Tusculum, a collection in Issa in the Gospina Batarija building and the eponymous site in the town of Vis.

Namely, Slobodna Dalmacija reports that ceremony marking the 200th anniversary of the museum was held yesterday, on Marmontova Street, where an exhibition of photographs "Salona", by Vicko Vidan, was set up. After that, a concert by Terezija Kusanović and friends and the Papadopoulo quartet was held in the museum.

The director of the institution, Ante Jurčević, announced:  "Two hundred years since the founding of the Archaeological Museum in Split is a significant anniversary for Croatian archeology, which will be solemnly marked through numerous events in the coming months. The commemoration ceremony begins on the day of its founding, with a concert in the museum garden and an exhibition of photographs in Marmontova Street, while the culmination of the celebration is planned for December 15, with the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the archaeological research of the Hellenistic and ancient city of Issa and the ceremonial academy at the Croatian National Theater in Split".
