April 13, 2023 - The Osijek airport is one of the smaller of nine airports in Croatia. With the eastern part of the country seriously underserved, hopes are that it will increase capacities soon.

As Poslovni writes, passenger interest is increasing in Adriatic airports, which are being renovated and prepared to receive an increasing number of passengers on long-haul flights, such as Pula, which wants to connect with North America, but continental airports are also working to improve their capacities.

Osijek Airport is starting a project to build a passenger terminal. A tender worth EUR 9.29 million without VAT has been published for a "turnkey" package, which includes the creation of design and technical documentation and building permits, as well as the execution of works. According to the tender documentation, the project will reconstruct the existing building with an emphasis on ensuring the conditions that must be met due to entry into the Schengen area, as well as arranging and upgrading the exterior of the building. For the reconstruction, Osijek Airport obtained building permits for the completed project back in 2015, but in the meantime it was abandoned and now it is necessary to adapt the project to new needs, in order to meet the criteria for the entry of passengers into Croatia from countries that are not in the Schengen area.

At the moment, such a connection has been re-established with London, because since June, Ryanair is back with flights to Osijek airport, twice a week, starting from June 2. Of international flights, Osijek airport also has a Croatia Airlines connection to Munich in this year's summer flight schedule.

The existing airport building was built in 1977 and renovated in 2007, and it was extended with permits issued in 2015, but these spaces were never put into operation, which is why the activities are now being restarted. The deadline for submitting offers for this project expires on May 9, and when the most acceptable offer is chosen and the contract is concluded, the estimated deadline for the completion of construction will be 14 months, with the fact that the period of issuing administrative acts for construction will not be counted in the deadline for execution.

Osijek airport is one of the smaller airports of nine in Croatia, and according to the recently published data of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, it recorded a strong increase in traffic in the first two months, in January 1163 (a growth of 76%), and in February 993 (+159%), and there are announcements that growth will be more apparent in the summer months, mostly due to the line with London, which will be open by the end of October. In total, more than 15 thousand passengers passed through this airport in 2022, compared to 10.9 thousand a year earlier, and only Mali Lošinj and Brač airports have less traffic than Osijek.

March 8, 2023 - Big news for everyone who has been waiting for a convenient way to travel to the Croatian east! The Ryanair Osijek to London line is back after a long hiatus. 

As SiB initially wrote, the aviation analyst Sean M, who regularly publishes news from the world of aviation on his Twitter, published important information for Osijek Airport, that starting from the summer season of 2023, the Irish airline Ryanair will once again fly to London. The flights will be on Fridays and Mondays, which will mean a new international link between Osijek and Europe.

Currently, you can fly from Osijek to Munich, Germany, and this line will certainly bring a lot to everyone who wants to visit London and the surrounding cities. It will potentially attract tourists from these countries to Osijek and the surrounding area as well.

On June 2, Ryanair will introduce a line between Osijek and London (Stansted Airport), thus returning to Klisa after a multi-year break, SiB confirmed.

Flights from Osijek to London shall fly on Mondays and Fridays, and flights are planned in the afternoon and evening.

Flights can already be booked through Ryanair's website.

The current price for the first flight on June 2 from Osijek to London is €30.99, and the return flight on Monday, June 5, will cost €48.99.

If you want to fly to London on Monday, June 5, you will pay €77.99 one way, but again on Friday,, the price from Osijek to London is €30. As for all other Ryanair flights, prices vary by date, and occupancy and change dynamically. The cheapest one-way ticket is €30, and the most expensive one in July was €103.99.

The good thing about Ryanair is that there are often promotional flight prices and various discounts with which you can get a much better price.

You should, however, keep in mind that the price does not include luggage, i.e. you can only take a small cabin bag. If you need more, you will have to pay extra.

July 22, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Trade Air domestic lines are once again delayed, this time until August 15. 

Private Croatian airline Trade Air has once again delayed the start of operations on domestic PSO lines, reports Croatian Aviation. 

Trade Air announced on its website that it is once again postponing the start of operations on domestic PSO lines. The mentioned lines have been suspended since May, and the start of operations was first announced for June, then for July 1, and then for July 18. Finally, the lines had last been announced for August 1, which now will not happen. The new planned date for the start of operations is August 15.

The announcement reads as follows: "Dear passengers, unfortunately, Trade Air expects to re-establish domestic flights only on August 15, 2022, after receiving confirmation from the relevant authorities. Sales will not open before August 1, so we invite you to visit us again after an unspecified date. When the sales open, we will announce it through established communication channels (news, Facebook, and Instagram)".

As a reminder, this summer Trade Air should operate on the following routes:

Osijek - Zagreb - Osijek,

Osijek - Pula - Split - Pula - Osijek,

Osijek - Rijeka - Osijek,

Rijeka - Split - Dubrovnik - Split - Rijeka,

Osijek - Zadar - Osijek, and

Rijeka - Zadar - Rijeka.

The number of weekly frequencies remains the same as in the previous four-year period, except for the lines between Osijek and Zadar and Rijeka and Zadar, which will operate once a week.

These lines are extremely important for Osijek Airport, which could have recorded high interest in the summer months due to the planned larger aircraft (Saab340 with 34 seats), and lines to airports on the coast. Due to bureaucracy, these lines won't run until mid-August, and considering that the start of traffic has already been postponed several times, it is difficult to say whether the lines will actually start operating from the specified date.

Once they start, all lines except the ones mentioned to and from Zadar will operate throughout the year, which is important not only for Osijek but also for other Croatian airports.

May 2, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as the year-round Croatia Airlines Munich-Osijek flight officially launched on Monday.

Today's Croatia Airlines flight on the international route OU4431 Munich - Osijek marked the beginning of the year-round air connection between eastern Croatia and the world. As of today, the Croatian national airline's Munich - Osijek flights are available to passengers throughout the year, twice a week - on Mondays and Fridays. The Dash 8-Q400 aircraft with a capacity of 76 seats will operate on the route, reports Croatian Aviation.

Croatia Airlines established this line in the winter of 2021, for the first time in the company's history, at the initiative of Osijek-Baranja County, the City of Osijek, Osijek-Baranja County Tourist Board, Osijek Tourist Board, and Osijek Airport. The flights were operated from November 15, 2021, to January 14 this year, and thanks to the excellent cooperation of all participants in this project, the achieved results and the quality market demand for flights opened the space for improving the line and it was agreed that the line would work year-round.

This joint project has created a new and quality service, which provides direct air connections between eastern Croatia and abroad, and passengers on this route can catch connecting flights from Munich to destinations around the world.

The introduction of the year-round Osijek-Munich route is an integral part of this year's Croatia Airlines flight schedule, in which the company plans to directly connect Croatia and 21 international destinations, with a total of 41 international flights.

This summer, Croatia Airlines plans to connect Croatia with 21 international destinations, 22 European airports, and fly on 41 international routes. In total, over 16,000 flights and approximately 1,766,000 seats are planned.

Croatia's busiest airport in 2021 has 18 European destinations with Croatian Airlines, which means six new destinations compared to the 2021 summer flight schedule. In addition, five new seasonal lines will be introduced in the first half of June:

March 10, 2022 - Croatia Airlines and Osijek Airport have continued cooperation on developing the international Osijek-Munich line and agreed that it would be year-round, ensuring that passengers from Osijek-Baranja County have a direct connection with Europe throughout the year.

It should be reminded that direct Osijek-Munich flights were introduced at the initiative of Osijek-Baranja County, the City of Osijek, Osijek-Baranja County Tourist Board, Osijek Tourist Board, and Osijek Airport, after which Croatia Airlines and Osijek Airport signed an agreement on business cooperation based on which the national carrier, from November 15, 2021, to January 14, 2022, and for the first time in its history, introduced direct international flights between Osijek-Munich and thus connected eastern Croatia with Europe by air, reports Croatian Aviation.

Thanks to the excellent cooperation of all participants in this project, the achieved results, and the quality market demand for flights, space has been opened for further improvement of the route, which will continue to be available to passengers every Monday and Friday from May 2 this year.

The cooperation on the Osijek-Munich line has provided additional conditions for even easier and faster travel for residents and business people in Osijek-Baranja County as well as other travelers, which at the same time creates conditions for improving the Croatian economy and tourism.

"From the exceptional cooperation in the winter with our partners Osijek-Baranja County, the City of Osijek, the Osijek-Baranja County Tourist Board, Osijek Tourist Board, and Osijek Airport, we have reached a new and high-quality year-round line that will ensure direct air connection with the German market throughout the year, i.e., flights to an important European transport hub through which passengers can travel around the world. Furthermore, I am glad that in eastern Croatia, we will contribute to the development of tourist and economic potentials of Osijek-Baranja County and the city of Osijek, and at the same time strengthen the business of Osijek Airport, making it an even more important transport point in Croatia," said Jasmin Bajić, President of the Management Board of Croatia Airlines.

"When the first business cooperation and the first selected Osijek Airport trial line becomes year-round, it is a sign that we are on the right track, and related to repositioning the airport, but also the development of our destination. In cooperation with the relevant ministry, a project is being prepared that includes expansion and modernization of infrastructure and all accompanying facilities of the passenger terminal building, and project documentation for the Osijek Airport expansion is being prepared to be ready to accept larger aircraft in the future. In recent years, Osijek-Baranja County has recorded positive economic indicators as well as the development of continental tourism, and this year-round, but also new lines that are planned will certainly contribute to even stronger economic development," said Ivan Anušić, Osijek-Baranja County Prefect.

"This line has connected Osijek with an important European transport hub, and thus with the whole world, and it is a great thing that the line is becoming year-round. This continuity will certainly contribute to the development of the economy, especially in Osijek's Nemetin Industrial Zone. The proximity of the Airport is one of the reasons why Osijek is an attractive city for investors. Osijek is not a seasonal city, Osijek lives all year round, and this line confirms and strengthens that," said Osijek Mayor Ivan Radić.

October 16, 2021 - Osijek-Munich flights now connect to 6 European destinations after a short transfer in the Bavarian capital. 

After Croatia Airlines announced it would introduce a regular route between Osijek and Munich, tickets are now available to purchase to 6 more international destinations,  reports Croatian Aviation. 

With one transfer in Munich, passengers from or to Osijek can now buy tickets to 6 European destinations - Copenhagen, Brussels, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin.

Although a relatively large number of Croatian citizens live in Munich, as a major European hub, Munich offers a number of connectivity options, and it is now possible to buy tickets for connecting flights via the Bavarian capital.

With one stop in Munich, passengers from Osijek now have access to the capitals of Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Ireland, and Denmark, as well as flights to Frankfurt. Tickets between Copenhagen, Brussels, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin, and Osijek can be purchased on the official website of the Croatian airline. Lufthansa and SAS aircraft also operate on flights from Munich to European destinations. 

Recall, from November 15 this year, a regular line between Osijek and Munich will be introduced, which will operate twice a week, every Monday and Friday.

Given that scheduled flights on the route between Munich and Osijek have so far been confirmed until mid-January, it is to be assumed that this number of available connections will remain in force until a possible extension of operations, which Croatia Airlines and Osijek Airport will actively discuss in the coming period.

The new Munich route is good news not only for tourists, but also for the many local people who have emigrated to Germany in search of a better economic future. The potential of tourism in Slavonia and eastern Croatia is largely untapped, and improved connections to other international destinations are key to its development.

June 7, 2021 - The new Air Pannonia aircraft was solemnly welcomed at Osijek Airport!

It arrived at Osijek's Klisa Airport from London! After two aircraft, the private company Air Pannonia strengthened its fleet with another business aircraft Cessna Citation 525A-CJ2, registration number 9A-JET, making them the only company in Croatia that owns three JETs that are primarily used to transport VIP passengers and medical organ transport.

"It is an aircraft that is one of the most comfortable in its class, and it arrived from the United Kingdom. Since the demand for flights with CJ2 has increased, they decided we follow the needs of the market and increase capacities," points out Zrinka Vlašić Kujundžija from Air Pannonia's marketing team.

In addition to the three aircraft, they are proud of the arrangement and expansion of the service capacity and hangar at Klisa Airport, where they organized the ceremonial arrival of the new aircraft, which was greeted by a jet of water cannons by firefighters.

Air Pannonia is a sister company of Air Tractor, which has a 28-year tradition in aviation. The company is family-owned, and they are the only company in Croatia that deals with all aviation segments (pilot training, service, pilot English language testing, medical organ transport, and, of course, VIP transport). Pilots from Croatia and the world are trained there, and they also own two Cessnas and the Antonov aircraft, which is known to all Osijek residents because it sprays mosquitoes.

From Zagreb to Osijek in 22 minutes!

The newly arrived aircraft flew for the British Zenith Aviation. The flight to Zagreb lasted 1 hour and 52 minutes, which is a great time because they had many backwinds, and the flight from Zagreb to Osijek lasted 22 minutes. It is from 2004 and has a capacity of seven passengers and one of their existing aircraft. It has 4200 hours of flight time which is very little in aviation jargon and can be said to be like new.

"We think it will serve us for about ten years, and its average speed is 400 knots. We are starting the registration process in Croatia, and I hope that within 40 days, they will be able to be seen in the European sky," said Krešimir Vlašić, director of flight operations, co-owner of the company, and captain.

"They are currently the only form of business traffic as most commercial lines have been discontinued, giving them a huge advantage. Business people who used to fly business class expect that they will now fly a private plane for that money, which is not realistic. Their traffic has increased, they do not suffer losses, but the price of labor has fallen, i.e., the price of an hour of an airplane has fallen compared to the previous two years. We can be satisfied because we ended last year with 1500 hours of flight, which is quite good, and we expect even more this year," concluded Vlašić.

March 29, 2021 - The latest flight news as Croatia Airlines flights to Osijek and Brac have been canceled until mid-April. 

Croatian Aviation reports that the Croatian national airline has announced the introduction of seasonal PSO routes within Croatia at the beginning of the summer flight schedule. However, flights on three PSO lines have been canceled until mid-April.

Croatia Airlines has canceled flights between Osijek and Split, Osijek and Dubrovnik, and Zagreb and Brac until the second half of April. Considering that these are PSO routes, on which the Republic of Croatia compensates for the difference between the realized revenues and direct flight costs, it is not clear why the national airline canceled the already announced flights.

Croatia Airlines offered flights on Sundays on the Split - Osijek - Split route starting March 28, but the first two announced rotations were canceled. Currently, the first direct flight on this line is on offer for April 11, but the company may cancel that flight as well.

The Dubrovnik - Osijek - Dubrovnik line was supposed to start operating today (March 29), but that flight was canceled, and other flights on Mondays until April 19.

According to the PSO program, the seasonal Zagreb - Brac - Zagreb service should operate twice a week. Still, the company canceled flights on Tuesdays until May and scheduled flights on Saturdays until April 24 were also canceled, which obviously will not meet the minimum prescribed number of available seats on the line this year.

Passenger demand is very low during the pandemic. Still, given that these are routes on which the state bears the difference between revenues and costs, it is not clear why Croatia Airlines canceled these flights, especially around the Easter holidays, when a certain number of Croatian citizens will surely travel between distant regions.

The purpose of the PSO is to enable rapid connectivity between the outermost regions. A flight lasting less than an hour between Zagreb and Brač or Osijek and Dubrovnik can in no way have an alternative in road transport, which takes many times longer, and which a certain number of passengers will now be forced to do since there are no direct flights at the moment, or they will cancel the planned trip.

Passengers from Osijek have an alternative to travel to Dubrovnik and Split with Trade Air, which opened sales in the summer flight schedule a few days ago, so travel by plane from Osijek to Split is possible four times a week, every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. In contrast, flights to Dubrovnik are available twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tickets can be purchased on the airline's website.

The PSO program will continue to apply until the end of this year's summer flight schedule according to the items from the contract in force from 2016 to 2020. The Ministry of the Sea, Transport, and Infrastructure said that the tender for the new contract period was not announced due to the outbreak of a global pandemic. When asked how the pandemic was justified when the tender was supposed to be announced a few months before the virus appeared in China, the competent Ministry did not answer.

January 11, 2021 – Unlike the record 2019, when more than 11.4 million passengers passed through Croatian airports, in the crisis 2020, that number dropped by as much as 81 percent, counting less than 2.2 million passengers.

At the beginning of each new year, the revenues from the last tourist year are added up, and tourists' numbers are concluded. However, it was inevitable that in 2020, during which world tourism experienced a massive decline due to the coronavirus pandemic, would also affect tourist numbers.

As reported earlier, the Croatian tourism sector saw 50 percent fewer tourist overnight stays in 2020 than the record 2019. Likewise, commercial aviation experienced its largest decline in history. In 2020, Croatian airports accepted and dispatched less than 2.2 million passengers, writes Croatian Aviation.

Traffic to Croatia's three largest airports, Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik, has been growing steadily for years, but this series has been interrupted by a global pandemic. The three mentioned airports had over 9.6 million passengers in 2019, while in 2020, they recorded less than 2 million passengers together (1,929,336). The fact that the other five Croatian airports had 242,827 passengers last year is also devastating, of which Zadar alone served over 120,000 passengers.

With 924,823 passengers throughout the year, the main Croatian airport Franjo Tuđman Zagreb failed to reach the millionth passenger in 2020. However, almost half of the total Croatian traffic in 2020 was realized at the Zagreb airport.

Although it recorded an increase in the number of passengers in January and February compared to the same period in 2019, Franjo Tuđman Airport recorded a decrease in the number of passengers of 73 percent compared to 2019.

Unlike Zagreb Airport, Split Airport in January and February has modest traffic compared to the summer, seasonal months, and so it was in 2020. However, after the global pandemic hit Croatia, air traffic in Split almost stopped.

However, compared to other Croatian airports on the coast, Split still had a certain number of passengers in the peak season, especially in August. Still, the numbers in the post-season dropped drastically again. With 674,366 passengers, Split Airport recorded a decrease in the number of passengers of 79.58 percent compared to 2019.

Dubrovnik Airport was one of the biggest losers last year. It was closed in April, while the traffic was very poor in May and June. An increase in the number of passengers was recorded only in July and August, but not enough to avoid a large drop in the number of passengers.

Although many companies flew to Dubrovnik this summer, the planes were empty rather than full, as confirmed by statistics. The decrease in the number of passengers at Dubrovnik Airport is 88.6 percent compared to 2019.

Traffic also dropped drastically at Zadar Airport, but not as much as in Pula. These two Croatian airports have been competing in the number of passengers for several years, and the difference between them is relatively small. Nevertheless, in 2020, Zadar accepted almost 40,000 more passengers than Pula. Zadar Airport recorded a drop in the number of passengers of 84.93 percent compared to 2019, and Pula Airport 89.6 percent.

In 2019, Rijeka Airport finally exceeded 200,000 passengers for the first time in its history. Still, the numbers dropped drastically in 2020 as many airlines have given up on introducing seasonal routes to this airport due to the global pandemic. Rijeka Airport thus recorded a decrease in the number of passengers of 86.22 percent compared to 2019.

In 2020, Osijek Airport had only domestic PSO (Public Service Obligation) lines and the Eurowings line to Stuttgart, but only in August. It recorded a decrease in the number of passengers of 85.72 percent compared to the previous 2019.

Brač Airport also recorded a decline in the number of passengers in 2020. A slightly more significant number of passengers was recorded only in July and August, but these are also modest numbers compared to the 2019 summer season.
