November 15, 2020 - From Saturday, November 14 until Saturday, November 21, the Rijeka Sugar Refinery Palace opening will take place for all interested visitors, lovers of Rijeka, and its history and for the citizens and guests of Rijeka. During the eight-day opening, free guided tours are organized for citizens in compliance with epidemiological measures.
After two and a half years of work on the renovation and arrangement of the building itself and the creation of an extremely attractive permanent exhibition on the history of Rijeka, this new space of the Museum of the City of Rijeka is ready to receive visitors.
The Sugar Palace has been a protected cultural asset since 1970. The city of Rijeka acquired it in the late 1990s as a result of the bankruptcy of the Rikard Benčić engine factory. Numerous experts consider this building to be one of the most beautiful Baroque palaces in the Republic of Croatia, and the interior of the building has so far been relatively unknown to many citizens because the building had the function of the administrative space of the former factory. The Croatian Restoration Institute conducted research inside the building itself and the results they obtained required a thoughtful attitude towards its future purpose.
The renovation of the Sugar Palace is an integral part of the EU project entitled "Tourist valorization of representative monuments of Rijeka's industrial heritage" for the implementation of which the City of Rijeka was approved co-financing in the amount of 68.9 million kuna grant from the European Regional Development Fund.
Due to the epidemiological situation and respect for epidemiological measures, tours during the eight-day opening will be organized in such a way that two groups of 25 people enter the museum at the same time, one of which will first tour the first floor and the other the second floor. Guided tours last 60 minutes, after which the area will be disinfected in a 30-minute break to ensure the reception of the next two groups of visitors.
Free tickets, which are to be picked up at “Ri Infu,” will list the day and hour a particular visitor can come to tour the Palace and its permanent exhibition, all to ensure that as many people as the epidemiological measures allow staying in the space at the same time.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Suzana Varosanec writes on the 13th of November, 2020, the RIO-Kantrida project is in full swing in Rijeka, and it is among the largest in housing construction in that city since Croatia's independence.
The crisis caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic failed to slow down this project worth around 50 million euros, the investor is the company Rio Projekti, while the contractor is one of the largest Croatian construction companies - Kamgrad. Poslovni's interlocutors say that the interest of buyers is great and that, among those who are interested in apartments within the RIO-Kantrida complex, a large number of those from abroad, especially, they add, from the Croatian diaspora, mostly from Germany and Austria, but also from more distant markets like those of the US and China.
The RIO-Kantrida complex consists of three buildings (A-13, B-8 and C-10 floors), with two underground floors for parking for tenants, while for the needs of the shopping centre on the ground floor, parking spaces outside the complex have been provided. A partner in the project is the traffic brokerage agency Dogma nekretnine, which has also worked as a consultant in collaboration with architects and urban planners who have been working on the RIO-Kantrida project for several years now. Noting that according to current guidelines, the agency has an annual turnover of almost 20 million kuna, the director of Dogma nekretnine Branko Papes says that so far, the interest of buyers from abroad has been predominantly focused on tourist destinations, such as Opatija, Crikvenica, Krka, etc.
"While the price of residential real estate in Opatija in attractive locations ranges from 500 to 600 thousand euros, in Rijeka it's possible to get it two to three times cheaper. In addition, this complex has a view of Kvarner, is close to the sea and beaches, and unlike, for example, Opatija, Rijeka is an urban area that operates all 12 months of the year, with two schools and several kindergartens,'' explained Papes.
He claims that there is great interest from other parts of Croatia, primarily from Zagreb, but that there are also clients from Varazdin, Osijek and the rest of the country.
''These apartments are more affordable than more recent construction in that location. At a time when nobody was even considering buying, back during lockdown, we sold a number of apartments through an online channel, therefore without direct contact. On a daily basis, we receive two to three inquiries from clients from outside Croatia. It's interesting to note that, although the Croatian diaspora in Sweden isn't very large, we also sold several apartments there,'' added Papes, revealing that the RIO-Kantrida project is co-financed by two well known banks - Erste and PBZ.
"In general, we expected a drop in sales and a drop in property prices, but since March we've seen a price increase of five to 10 percent. During these uncertain times, clients seem to have recognised that investing in real estate is a safe investment. And about 25 percent of buyers here are buyers just for the sake of investing, to rent and potentially make an annual return of four to five percent, which is impossible interest from a bank today,'' noted Papes.
He noted that the fact that Rijeka, in terms of the real estate market, has the specificity that as much as 30 percent of its turnover isn't strictly related to the Croatian economy and that goes in their favour.
"On top of that, unlike the rest of the country, real estate prices have never gone wild in Rijeka, so this fact is also a kind of trump card of this micro market today. When it comes to customer interest, the proximity of European centres, the climate, and a completely open environment is crucial, which is why the latest data shows that more and more people are gravitating towards Rijeka, as are the number of inquiries from Zagreb and Varazdin who would settle there permanently,'' Papes concluded.

Recall, Gorica was supposed to host Slaven Belupo on Sunday, November 8, at 19:10, though the match was postponed again due to COVID-19.
Several members of the Koprivnica first league squad tested positive, including players and members of the professional staff, so the entire team was ordered by the competent epidemiologist to go into self-isolation until Thursday, November 12.
Gorica thus did not play for the third round in a row, as their previous two matches were also postponed (against Rijeka and Varazdin) because of COVID-19.

As Novac/Kresimir Zabec writes on the 7th of November, 2020, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has diverted both the flow and mode of freight transport within Europe as a whole, but also from China to Europe. Before the pandemic struck the world, goods were mostly transported by air and road, but now everything is changing and the movement of goods has been redirected to a greater extent to rail and sea transport. Rijeka Port is doing well out of it.
Container transport by rail between China and Europe has greatly increased when compared to last year. Recently, the New Silk Road has also been used to transport goods from the Far East. 40-foot-tall DRY freight containers are used to transport general cargo. This mostly regards various types of machinery, electronic components, metal and plastic products and the like. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, in the first six months of this year, rail freight transport in Croatia increased by 5.3 percent compared to last year, with Rijeka Port establishing itself high on the ''ladder''.
Most of the goods have been and are currently being transported from the busy Rijeka Port, which is excellent news for this Northern Adriatic city which already boasts a rich and complex industrial past.
"Rail freight is an excellent and reliable solution in terms of costs and transit time. Goods from China reach the European centres of Warsaw, Dunajska Streda and Budapest in an average of two weeks, and to Croatia, they arrive in 18 to 22 days," explained Zoran Starcevic, the director of one of the leading freight forwarders in the Republuc of Croatia, Cargo-partner doo.

November 06, 2020 - After smart parking, meters and air quality monitoring systems, A1 Croatia continues to apply IoT solutions, this time in waste management, and given the national coverage of the A1 NB IoT network, they are ready for the exponential growth of IoT ecosystems in Croatia, said Ivan Gabrić, General Manager for Business Users A1 Croatia, at an online press conference.
As reported by Večernji list, some European and world cities have already conducted pilot projects which confirmed the many advantages of the application of IoT technology in efficient waste management, ie smart waste containers, say from A1 and explain: English Newcastle has saved 50% in operating costs by applying occupancy sensors and a platform for optimal waste collection on 1,200 bins. They estimated that it was 49 percent less CO2 pollution and also had 51 percent fewer complaints from citizens. The port area of Dublin in Ireland, by introducing a smart tank system, has reduced the waste collection rate by as much as 85%, resulting in savings of 75% in operating costs, or € 200,000 per year. Also, the Irish city of Galway has reduced the number of collections by 80%, while at the same time, 40% fewer tanks by replacing classic tanks with smart ones in frequent places in just one month.
A1 Croatia, in cooperation with its partner, the company Interseroh, brings to the domestic market three models of containers for smart waste management on IoT technology.
The first model is intended for outdoor use and allows you to press waste by increasing the capacity of the tank up to 10 times. In addition to being powered by solar energy, it is energy self-sustaining. It is equipped with a charge sensor and equipment for communicating with the cloud platform in real-time. Its equivalent is the second model intended for interior spaces. It is also equipped with a press, status sensors and a system for connecting and sending information. Disposal of waste in the tank is contactless, ie it opens to the motion sensor.
The third model is also intended for indoor use. The name of the smart container was acquired thanks to the application of artificial intelligence that detects the type of waste with sensors and cameras and automatically separates it into the appropriate container. In addition, the principle of machine learning in each recognition of the type of waste learns, complements the knowledge base and shares with other containers in the system. It is equipped with four internal containers that can be adapted for different types of waste according to user needs as well as a press to increase capacity.
"Thanks to the IoT cloud platform, it is possible to remotely check the tank filling status at any time so that discharge can be planned efficiently. The map shows the location of the tank, the status of occupancy and it is possible to create optimal tour routes, which significantly reduces operating costs. In addition, analytics and information are available, and given that the solution is in the cloud, no special user IT infrastructure is required", explained Siniša Staničić, Director of ICT Sales and Solutions at A1 Croatia.
Containers can be connected via WiFi, GSM or NB IoT network. The highest standards of hygiene are achieved by non-contact opening, antibacterial coating and are hermetically sealed preventing the spread of unpleasant odors or liquids. They comply with all applicable directives and regulations of the European Union with the CE mark and certificate. It is possible to extend the functionality by adding different sensors such as measuring air quality, noise level or WiFi spot.
When it comes to price, they depend on the type of tank and "accessories". The complete solution also contains software, a platform in the cloud and a complete service. The price depends on whether the complete solution is the entire aaS (as a Service) through a monthly fee.
External tank with solar panels, which is a set of 2 tanks, with a press and one without a press, each of 120 liters with basic functionality belongs to the class of up to 10,000 euros. The inner tank with a built-in press with a 120-liter motion sensor is around 28,000 kuna. The internal tank with artificial intelligence AI is at the level of 10,000 euros.
The first smart bins should appear in Rijeka since A1 Croatia is cooperating with the city of Rijeka on this smart city solution project.

ZAGREB, November 6, 2020 - Social and Democratic Party (SDP) leader Pedja Grbin told a press conference on Friday that the SDP was today launching its campaign for the local election in Rijeka because Rijeka was the best example of how to love and lead your city in the right way.
At the press conference, the SDP introduced its candidates for Rijeka Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Marko Filipovic and Sandra Krpan.
"Rijeka is an excellent example to everyone in Croatia of what needs to be done to improve the lives of people who put their trust in you as a leader", Grbin said.
He thanked Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel, who has been at the helm of Rijeka for 21 years, noting that the SDP "can be proud because he has done a lot for SDP's image and has shown how SDP members should act when elected to public office".
Obersnel is soon to be 64, so he said that a generational shift was normal and "there is no doubt that the two candidates will defend the basic postulates of the social democracy and what has been achieved in Rijeka, an open and inclusive city."
Filipovic is currently Rijeka Deputy Mayor.
Croatia is to hold local elections in May 2021.
November 6, 2020 - In the 3rd round of the Europa League, Rijeka falls to Napoli, and Dinamo tops Wolfsberger AC.
It was the battle of the Cup winners on Thursday night, as 2020 Croatian Cup winner Rijeka held their own against the 2020 Italian Cup winner and legendary Italian club Napoli.
Unfortunately, just like two weeks, Rijeka suffered the same fate as they did against Real Sociedad at Rujevica and was left without points.
Rijeka opened the game brilliantly against the favorites, and with aggressive pressing, they forced Napoli to make poor passes, after which they created good chances to score with quick counterattacks.
Rijeka had the first great opportunity in the 4th minute when Menalo shot well from 20 meters, but Napoli goalkeeper Meret managed to defend. However, even that was not enough to wake up the guests who came into the game quite nonchalantly, and in the 13th minute, there was a new counterattack for Rijeka. Menalo and Kulenović brilliantly combined to find Murić, who nailed the helpless Meret's net with a precise shot from the top of the penalty area for 1:0.
Unfortunately, Robert Murić had to come off due to injury in the 24th minute, an exit which greatly affected the further course of the match. With the departure of Murić, Napoli took control of the pitch, and although they did not create any likely opportunity to score, they equalized at the end of the first half. Demme scored off a Mertens assist for 1:1.
Napoli increased their pressure in the second half, which proved to be too tough for Rijeka to sustain. An own goal in the 63rd minute by Filip Braut gave Napoli the 1:2 victory.
In the second match of the 3rd round, Real Sociedad defeated AZ Alkmaar 1:0 (0:0) with a goal by Porto (58). Thus, halfway through the competition, AZ Alkmaar, Napoli, and Real Sociedad have six points each, while Rijeka is in last with no points.
In the 4th round in three weeks, Napoli - Rijeka and AZ Alkmaar - Real Sociedad will play.
In the second match on Thursday, Dinamo scored their first goal in the 3rd round of Group K and achieved their first victory, defeating Austrian club Wolfsberger 1:0 with a goal by Atiemwen in the 76th minute, which put them at the top of the group.
Dinamo played with a man-up throughout the second half but was not particularly dangerous. However, the first victory and a total of five points in the group was secured by Atiemwen only two minutes after he entered the the pitch in the 74th minute.
Both sides had major problems with COVID-19 infected players before the match. Namely, Dinamo had nine infected players, as well as coach Zoran Mamic, who was replaced by Alen Peternac. The Austrian club had slightly less, or only eight infected players.
Dinamo played without Livaković, Petković, Stojanović, Theophile-Catherine, and Ivanušec, while Wolfsberger did not have Liendl, their best player, scorer, and captain.
In the second game of this group, Nikola Vlašić's CSKA Moscow lost 3:1 to Feyenoord.
The home team scored all three goals in just 10 minutes in the middle of the second half - Haps (63), Kokca (71), and Geertruida (72) scored. Senesi (80) reduced the lead with an own goal for the final 3:1 result.
Dinamo leads the group with five points and a goal difference of 1:0, followed by Wolfsberger and Feyenoord with four points each, while CSKA is last with two points.
In the 4th round in three weeks, Wolfsberger - Dinamo and CSKA - Feyenoord will play.

November 2, 2020 – From southern Spain to Budapest through Rijeka and Zagreb and from Salzburg through Zagreb, Belgrade and Skopje to Greece, Croatia pan Europe trains will run 160 kilometres per hour by 2030
In the biggest investment ever made in the infrastructure of the country's rail network, Croatia pan Europe trains will run 160 kilometres Per Hour By 2030. In an investment costing 4.5 billion Euros, 750 kilometres of railways will be modernised.
© HZPP
The lines that will receive the upgrade will connect Rijeka to Budapest in Hungary via Zagreb (RH2) and Zagreb to Belgrade via Vinkovci (RH1). Though these lines already exist, they have never undergone an overhaul of the scale proposed. The modernisation with ensure double lanes across the whole of both routes and facilitate passenger train speeds of 160 kilometres per hour.
The level of investment means that during the next ten years, HŽ Infrastruktura's (Croatian Railway Infrastructure Company) rebuild of the Croatia pan Europe trains network will be the largest infrastructure project in the Republic of Croatia and the largest beneficiary of EU grants in the transport sector. Most of the money for the modernisation is coming from European Union grants.

The RH2 line is part of the Mediterranean Corridor which connects the south of the Iberian peninsula with eastern Hungary via six countries. The line runs from Almeria on the Mediterranean coast in the south-east of Spain, through Madrid and Barcelona. It passes through Marseille in France, then northern Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, the Hungarian capital of Budapest, before finishing in Záhony in the east of Hungary, not far from the border with Ukraine. The route covers more than 6000 kilometres. The Croatian section will pass through Jurdani (six kilometres north of Opatija), Rijeka, Karlovac, Zagreb, Dugo Selo, Križevci and Koprivnica.

The RH1 line is part of the Pan-European Corridor X. The Croatia pan Europe trains section of this transport route was once one of the three lines taken by the Orient Express. The modernised rail line will start in Salzburg, Austria and pass through Ljubljana before reaching Zagreb. The line will pass through Slavonski Brod and Vinkovci before making its way to Belgrade, then Niš in southern Serbia. The old Oriental Express line then headed east, to Istanbul via Sofia, Bulgaria. The EU-funded train section of the Pan-European Corridor X instead heads south, to Thessaloniki in Greece via Skopje in Macedonia.

Trains are currently the greenest transport option for long-distance travel. As the world heads in the direction of seeking energy sources that do not rely on finite fossil fuels, rail also currently looks to be the long-distance travel option best-equipped to meet this challenge. In the future, visitors from all across Europe may increasingly rely on the Croatia pan European trains network in order to access the country. The improvements also increase business and leisure opportunities for Croatians in Europe.

Around 935 million Euros was invested in the Croatian railway infrastructure between 2010 and 2019. The new investment dwarfs those figures. The initial investment, occurring between 2020 and 2024 amounts to as much as 1.8 billion Euros, of which almost 78.7 per cent is co-financed by the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESI) and the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). From 2025 to 2030, EU funds totalling more than 2.7 billion Euros are expected to be invested in the Croatia pan European trains network.
Freight train passage along the lines will also be increased, reaching a new speed of 120 kilometres per hour. The Croatia pan European trains network also offers great potential to open up continental Croatia regions to international visitors. The Croatian railway network currently has 2,617 kilometres of track, of which 274 kilometres are double-track and 980 are electrified.

October 29, 2020 - Towns within the Rijeka Ring and Klana Municipality have joined forces to achieve better visibility and recognizability on the tourist market.
HRTurizam reports that signing the Local Tourist Board Association agreement, including the Rijeka Ring and the Municipality of Klana, was held in the Rijeka City Hall on Wednesday.
The agreement was signed by the Rijeka Tourist Board, Bakar Tourist Board, Kastav Tourist Board, Kraljevica Tourist Board, Čavle Tourist Board, Jelenje Tourist Board, Kostrena Tourist Board, Viškovo Tourist Board, and the Mayor of Klana.
This Tourist Board Agreement for Towns and Municipalities in the Rijeka Ring and the Klana Municipality regulates the manner of cooperation to jointly implement activities aimed at marketing for the Tourist Board Association of the Rijeka Ring and Klana Municipality.
Namely, in the Law on Tourist Boards and the Promotion of Croatian Tourism, which entered into force on January 1, 2020, tourist boards and local self-government units can join forces.
The Mayor of Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel, welcomes this initiative, which is, in fact, a continuation of the cooperation between cities and municipalities in the Rijeka ring.
"Through this joint action, we present ourselves as a unique tourist destination, rich in cultural and historical heritage. At the same time, such united tourist communities will be able to focus their resources on further raising the quality and connecting tourist products in the entire tourist destination," said Obersnel.
Director of the Rijeka Tourist Board Petar Škarpa said that the Rijeka Ring Tourist Board and the Municipality of Klana had been actively cooperating since 2009. Numerous projects have already been implemented in that period, which has united and presented the Rijeka Ring tourist offer in the extremely demanding tourist market.
“A website has been created, a general prospectus that has been distributed to numerous fairs and presentations, various promotional and information materials, mobile applications, and several other materials. The Bike Rijeka project is especially noteworthy, for which we received special recognition from the UNWTO," said Škrapa, emphasizing that the Agreement will further strengthen the cooperation of all tourist communities to strengthen the tourism sector, redefine joint activities, and with the synergy of all involved, implement all projects that await us in the "new normal."
CNTB Director Kristjan Staničić emphasized that this cooperation will enable more efficient branding and positioning on the domestic and global tourist map.
"This will make it easier for you to develop your joint marketing plan, joint product development strategy, conduct joint education, represent common interests, but also make it easier to get money from the Funds for projects and programs of joint tourist boards," said Staničić, referring to previous examples of similar associations on the island of Krk and Gorski Kotar.
Although it is only a project association, the Tourist Board Association of the Rijeka Ring and Klana Municipality will certainly achieve better visibility and recognizability of the destination on the tourist market.
