A Magnificent Night at the Museum of Sinj Alka

(photos: Ferata.hr)

An unusual event took place last night at the Museum of Sinj Alka, informs Ferata.hr. In fact, it was the first time, the museum was a part of this Croatian cultural event - Night of Museums. There were already several hundreds of people waiting in front of the museum, even before Damir Župić marked the beginning of this truly beautiful story of Sinj with the sounds of a trumpet.

When a cultural institution gets 3500 visits in one evening, it is something special.

Along with the staff of the museum and the members of the Alka Knights Society, there where Alkars dressed in colorful uniforms and members of the Sinj Folk Theatre dressed in uniforms from the 18th century, who helped in guiding the visitors through the exhibition. Visitors were able to enjoy a documentary about Alka, a tour through the museum, a performance of Klapa Sinj, some good Alka wine and fritule.

The interest for touring the museum was so big, that the doors of the museum had to close several times during the night, because it would be impossible to fit in all interested people at once.

In the full projection hall of the museum´s permanent exhibition, its author Nikolina Jelović Mitrović gave a lecture about "How the Museum of Sinj Alka was Created". In addition to the people from Sinj and Cetina area, there were hundreds of people from other parts of Dalmatia interested in visiting the museum, especially from Split and Dubrovnik.

Thousands of Visitors in Only 5 Months - The Museum of Sinj Alka

The great 300th anniversary of the Alka tournament was celebrated last year in Sinj and the whole Cetina region. One of the events, which enriched the anniversary was the opening of the Museum of Sinj Alka..

The whole Alka tradition in one place attracted many locals and tourists. According to the Ferata.hr website, almost everyone who visited Sinj in August 2015, found his way into the newly opened museum.

According to the director Boris Filipović Grčić, from the opening of the Museum until the end of the year, the museum was visited by around 12.000 people. Approximately half of them (around 6.000) were pensioners, children (preschool and elementary school children) and students. Domestic people from all over Croatia are dominating the structure of the visitors.

The director of the Museum expressed satisfaction with the number of visitors and said the following about the plans for the future:

"It was during the last year, when we contacted several travel agencies and schools - the major segment of the group tourism of Sinj city. We are negotiating with agencies focusing on pilgrims, which are bringing people to Sinj for a weekend stay. We had representatives of the UHPA (Association of Croatian Travel Agencies), all 20 of them staying in Sinj and spending a whole day in a presentation about the Alka Museum. They left with a positive impression of the city."
