Sinj will again be the centre of the carnival festivities on February 2, 2016 - the second Carnival Festival of the Cetina Region (Smotra Mačkara) will take place in Sinj, reports Ferata.hr today.

The Sinj Deputy Mayor Zlatko Ugrin expressed his satisfaction with the last year´s festival, which was very popular among people of Sinj and Cetina region.

"These carnival processions are a long-term tradition and are a protected heritage by the list of intangible cultural heritage of Croatia. We believe, that this way, we maintain the tradition and use it to serve as a tourism attraction at the same time. Last year, around 70 photographers from all over Croatia visited Sinj on the Carnival Festival Day, this may be a prove enough."

Ugrin says, that this year´s Festival will be even more interesting, as several Carnival associations will participate.

"There will be costumes from the Cetina region and there are even some announcements for other guests. Some 20 associations will participate, some with 20-30 members, others with 200. So, I expect to have around 1.000 participants at the Festival this year, said the Sinj Deputy Mayor Zlatko Ugrin.

Thousands of Visitors in Only 5 Months - The Museum of Sinj Alka

The great 300th anniversary of the Alka tournament was celebrated last year in Sinj and the whole Cetina region. One of the events, which enriched the anniversary was the opening of the Museum of Sinj Alka..

The whole Alka tradition in one place attracted many locals and tourists. According to the Ferata.hr website, almost everyone who visited Sinj in August 2015, found his way into the newly opened museum.

According to the director Boris Filipović Grčić, from the opening of the Museum until the end of the year, the museum was visited by around 12.000 people. Approximately half of them (around 6.000) were pensioners, children (preschool and elementary school children) and students. Domestic people from all over Croatia are dominating the structure of the visitors.

The director of the Museum expressed satisfaction with the number of visitors and said the following about the plans for the future:

"It was during the last year, when we contacted several travel agencies and schools - the major segment of the group tourism of Sinj city. We are negotiating with agencies focusing on pilgrims, which are bringing people to Sinj for a weekend stay. We had representatives of the UHPA (Association of Croatian Travel Agencies), all 20 of them staying in Sinj and spending a whole day in a presentation about the Alka Museum. They left with a positive impression of the city."

The Sky over Sinj Through the Lens of Eddy Meštrović

It is not uncommon for the sky over Sinj to be full of gliders or parachute jumpers. Sinj is a city with a sports airport - Piket and for those, who are not familiar with the activities of the Aero Club Sinj, we will only say, it has something to do with parachuting, gliding and modeling, reports an article at Dalmacijanews.

All sorts of sport activities can be enjoyed here and for those of us, who are not willing to engage in any of them, but are more into watching it from the safety of the ground, here is a video made by Eddy Meštrović from Split. It is a compilation showing the events from 2013 until recently - Sinj Air Show 2015 and the Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Independent Aviation Leadership of the 4th Guards Brigade.

It is not uncommon for the Piket to welcome foreigners as well, so even Germans were jumping last year with the locals. If you, however have not yet managed to try any of these adrenaline sports, perhaps you will get inspired by this video. Enjoy!!

Mountaineering Tradition: Over 150 Mountaineers on Kamešnica on the Feast of the Epiphany

There are several reasons why this beautiful tradition is taking place in Kurtegić Dolac. One of them, and maybe the most important one is, that this area of Kamešnica is certainly one of the most beautiful corners of this otherwise beautiful and attractive mountain.

The Mountaineering association "Dinaridi" from Split, spends the feast of Epiphany traditionally at the Kamešnica mountain in Kurtegić Dolac, on their mountain shelter "Eduvard - Edo Retelj" at 1450 meters above sea level, informs Dalmacija News on January 7, 2016.
This year was no different with the presence of over 150 people from several mountaineering associations and societies. Along with the hosts, there were mountaineers from PD "Promina" from Drniš, PD "Svilaja" from Sinj, HPD "Mosor" from Split, PD "Jelinak" from Trilj, PD "Kamešnica" from Otok, HPK "Sv. Mihovil" from Šibenik, PD "Perun" from Podstrana, Pd "Pozjate" from Brela, HPD "Sv. Ilija" from Baška Voda, HPD "Kozjak" from Kaštel Sućurac, HPD "Ante Bedalov" from Kaštel Kambelovac, HPD "Prpa" from Baške Oštarije, mountaineering friends from the neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina PD "Cincar" from livno, PD "Kamešnica" from Livno, and the Herzegovinian mountain rescue service.. .

Although the weather was in line with the season - beautiful winter scenery, moving on the fresh mountain air with the physical effort that has been invested, socializing in Kurtegić Dolac was filled with new strength, happiness and satisfaction. Being a mountaineer means to visit and to get to know the beauties of the Earth, enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery, acquire new acquaintances and friendships, and exactly this is what the 150 mountaineers experienced. Many hiking adventures from last year were told and some agreements and plans for hiking in this starting year have been made.

Of course, there was plenty of local delicacies, that go with this time of a year, and in the end, everything was spiced up with songs and a promise of a reunion same time, same place, next year.

Weekend Break: Inland Dalmatia - Video from the Croatian National Television

The Croatian National Television in cooperation with the Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ) suggests where to spend a family weekend in Croatia - few ideas what to do in the Dalmatian Hinterland for a weekend break.

Let´s start with a few associations. Alka, Our Lady of Sinj and the friendly people, not to be found anywhere else. That is Sinj. Just 35 kilometres away from Split, but totally different. There is a different way of communication and people use a very ´creative´ and ´vivid´ vocabulary, so the insiders say, that every visitor will return from Sinj with a few new words in his vocabulary. Of course, with a lot of catchphrases.

Locals say, that life in Sinj takes place in bars. There are even 150 in the city centre. So, the first thing you will do in Sinj is drink a coffee on the square (pjaca). You can visit Sinj any time of the year, because we have the most bars per capita, we also have a great night life and Sinj girls are even prettier than those in Split, as well as our guys, say people in Sinj proudly.

But when you see those little "Alkars", your heart will melt, as they are so sweet. Because every little boy younger than 10, coming from the Vuckovići hamlet in Sinj can participate in the Children´s Alka. It is interesting, that all of them are from Vučkovići, but they are not related. Those little "Alkars" are the perfect introduction to the Museum of Sinj Alka, where you will be so impressed by Alka, that you will want to braid your hair and sketch those gorgeous Alka knights.

Since the opening for the 300 anniversary of the Alka tournament this summer, 10.000 visitors passed through the museum already. A modern and interactive museum with more than 100 exhibits is waiting for everyone in Sinj. From life-size Alka knights and horses to lots of archive content in digital format, says the head of the Museum.

First the tradition, than sports. Sinj surroundings is ideal for recreational sports of all kinds, especially hikers and bikers. There are over 40 km of marked bike trails in Sinj, so it is ideal for a day trip over the weekend fun for the whole family.

But that´s not all. You can´t leave Hinterland hungry, because that would make the hosts angry. Even the dishes have heroic names, so it is easy to become a hero after you eat ´arambaši´. And for the way back, they will pack some prosciutto (pršut) and Sinj donuts (uštipak) made for all kind of occasions.

Little Town Otok near Sinj Pays Bachelors to Get Married

Making a decision to get married might not be the easiest one, for sure. People are not so keen to get married very young and even if in the "right age", they seem to be less interested in marriage. In Otok near Sinj, the local authorities decided to stimulate people to get married by paying them a one-time financial incentive.

According to Radio Dalmacija, Otok near Sinj is full of eligible bachelors. More than 400 of them are still not married and it seems they are not planing to get married any time soon.

The Mayor of Otok, Branko Samardžić sais: "If we would know the real reason, we would solve it. I believe we are not the only one with this kind of problem, many are struggling with the very same issue."

To inspire the bachelors of Otok to start a family, the municipality has decided to stimulate them. The offer is valid from January 1, 2016 and for each new marriage, the municipality offers 5.000 kn (approx. 650 eur).

"We chose this kind of support in starting a family in the amount of five thousand kuna. We support every newborn child too. For the first, we give 2.000 kn, for the second it is 4.000 kn, for the third, 6.000 kn, and so on.. . We care for students too. We have 110 of them and all of them all receiving scholarships. Elementary school children have free school books and high school students free transportations", said Branko Samardzic and he added: "People are make jokes about it now, but we believe that they will accept it with time."

We hope that the support of the five thousand kuna for starting a new family and the financial incentive for every child will stimulate the bachelors of Otok to get married, but also that we will inspire other cities and municipalities to do the same.

"Visoka is a mountain above Sinj - the south-eastern slope of the Svilaja mountain, divided by it by the Sutina canyon. At the top, there is a 10 m high concrete cross. It is a place of pilgrimage of the Dicmo, Sinj and the Cetina region residents. There is a beautiful view from the top: Sinj on one side with Sinj Valley and its surrounding mountains, and on the other side is Dicmo valley followed by the sea and the islands. "
