Split Carnival 2020: Kid's Events, Love Rave, Fat Tuesday and More

February 19, 2020 - After the Riva lit up last Sunday for the salsa-inspired Carnival opening with Cubismo, Split Carnival continues with a week of colorful events for everyone to enjoy.

Namely, Dalmacija Danas reports that the festive program continues throughout the week with free dance workshops, while the festivities heat up this weekend to Fat Tuesday.

After last year's success at Dardin, the organizers are once again using the famous Split park as a hub for the ‘Magical Forest’ inspired Children's Carnival, intended for elementary and secondary school kids. The Kindergarten Carnival will take place on Monday.

This Saturday, February 22, at 11 am, the program begins by handing over the city keys, and continues with the interactive play ‘Magical Disco’.

Members of the Dance Center and children's groups will take the stage.

Children and parents are invited to come on time because, throughout the program, the jury will evaluate the best costumes. At the end of the program, between 1 to 2 pm, prizes will be awarded. The prize fund is 2000kn - 1000 kuna goes to the winner, and at 200 kuna each will split the other five places.

The Kindergarten Carnival will be held traditionally in the large hall of ŠC Gripe on Monday, February 24, from 10-11:30 am.

All kindergartens near Gripe are invited to come by foot, while paid buses are organized for those further away.

The Kindergarten Carnival will feature mascots, an interactive children's play, and tempting prizes. All parents with kindergarten-aged children who do not attend kindergarten are also invited to join the program.

Since the city stopped the Carnival dance party at Peristyle in 2016, Split's clubs have taken over. You won't want to miss the best-masked winter party on Saturday, February 22, from 11:30 pm.

Dj Sonic from Paris, Pero FullHouse and Yelle will take the Central stage for the Love Rave.

Fat Tuesday, February 25, will once again enrich Dardin park. The diverse evening begins at 7 pm with the presentation of costumes. From 8 pm, carnival-goers can enjoy a concert featuring Krešo Bengalka.

During the concert, the jury will select the best costumes. The winners will split 2000 kuna - 1000kn for the first prize and 200 kuna each for the other places.

Since the organizers wanted to prepare a program that all attendees could enjoy, after Krešo Bengalka, Mladen Grdovic will take the stage.

After the concert, around 11:50 pm, the Carnival parade procession will begin.

Opening Program Announced for 2020 Split Carnival

February 9, 2020 - It is that time of the year again…. Split Carnival (or Krnjeval) returns to the city!

Valentine’s Day isn’t the only thing happening in Split this month. Split Carnival returns to the Riva with an opening party on Sunday, February 16!

Namely, the keys of the city will be handed over by Krnjeval masters at the already traditional Cubisma concert that will result in a raging Riva dance party next Sunday. This spicy salsa spectacle will take place with the instructors of Centar Plesa, dancers of local clubs, and tourists in Split.

Cubismo plays energetic dance music based on Afro-Cuban rhythms, but in its own distinctive style. The band members come from Croatia, Venezuela, Cuba and Slovenia; they are the most significant band playing this type of music in this part of Europe. Cubismo has released seven CDs so far, most of them worldwide.

Throughout their career, Cubismo has collaborated with many global music stars. The "Motivo Cubano" CD was recorded in Cuba with members of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club, and the "Viva la Habana" CD featured Yolanda Duke, who was the lead singer of the Tito Puente Orchestra at the time. Regarding musicians from Croatia, Cubismo has hosted many icons on their albums and at their concerts such as Josipa Lisac, Gibonni, Gabi Novak, Stjepan "Jimmy" Stanic, Oliver Dragojevic and many others, as well as musicians from wider areas such as Vlada Divljan from Idoli, The Brass Band from Macedonia and the "King" of Roma Music Saban Bajramovic. They have always been proud of their "multi-cult" concept, which they believe contributes greatly to the expansion of musical and human perspectives.

Cubismo is known for its high-quality music and skillful members and has been regularly awarded the Porin and Status. The band was founded in 1995 and is celebrating 23 years this year. They are named after the jazz trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie's "Cu-bi cu-bop", which was one of the first to mix Afro-Cuban jazz with jazz rhythms and rhythms of other musical directions.

This year’s Split Carnival will close with the famous Love Carnival Rave, to be held on February 22 with the sounds of house and techno. Popular Parisian DJ and producer DJ SONIC will take the stage, as will Split DJs Yelle and Pero FullHouse, who is in charge of warm-up & cool down.

Split Carnival Announces Vibrant Program to Rev Up Winter

February 6, 2019 - Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, we have an announcement we think you’ll all welcome this winter… Split Carnival is coming back!

A cherished winter event that promises to rev up the rather bleak season returns on February 23, 2019, with a flashy program. Carnival, or Krnjeval to the locals, begins with the always memorable wedding presenting the marriage of an acclaimed couple we have yet to discover. As you might remember, however, the most prominent young man and woman who have marked the past year with significance will be chosen to walk down the Carnival aisle. After Nives Ivanković, Ava Karabatić and Ivan Pernar, Ante Cash and Miss Croatia 2017 Martina Mitar, this year’s couple promises to be a hit.

As a wedding gift, the couple will receive the key to the City of Split and be tasked with tidying Split of all of its problems for the next ten days. While masks are encouraged as dress attire, so are bright and cheerful outfits. Come prepared.

Before the wedding, at noon, a massive Zumba fitness party will break out on the Riva. Everyone is invited to join in as Zumba is a dance and workout for all generations. All that means is that you can dance without knowing a thing, so grab your friends for a good time.

The participants are the instructors and dancers of the Dance Center and all the associations and dance clubs cooperating with the Split Carnival.

The local Zumba fitness instructors include:

Enamel Felix De Los Santos Bello

Meri Tičić Santos

Polina Mytko

Alma Mimica

Jasna Vidović

Ivana Ramadža

Stella Zaboš

After the Carnival wedding, the new city administration will raise the famed Carnival flag on Pjaca and continue on tour to the Carnival exhibition at the Ethnographic Museum.

And that’s just day one!

Carnival and its many accompanying events will take place in Split from February 23 to March 5, 2019. Check out the Carnival website for all of the events, from raves to converts, salsa parties, and more.
