November 17, 2019 - A look at Zinfandel Food & Wine Bar's 2019/20 winter menu.
We have finally reached that special time of year when our favorite Split establishments warm us up with what’s in store for winter. And we’re confident that the chilly season ahead will be anything but bleak thanks to what Zinfandel Food & Wine Bar is preparing for its faithful patrons.
Serving Split since 2013, Zinfandel has no time to disappoint their foodie fans, and their new winter offer confirms just that.
Whether you’re into a glass of wine and light bites or a hot and hearty main course, Zinfandel has got you covered this season.
Beginning with the bar menu, which is anything but basic, Zindanfel is busting out tempura sardines, mini burgers with caramelized onion and crispy pancetta, foie gras and hummus share platters, or hand-cut potatoes with pancetta.
For starters, enjoy a rich tableside steak tartare or foie gras terrine, or dig into the house-made spaghetti with burnt butter, truffles and semi-fried tomatoes, the agnolotti with skuta cheese and burnt fig, or the ravioli topped with apricot cream, beetroot and grilled prawns. No appetizer list in Split would be complete without a creamy risotto, which Zinfandel offers with grana Padano and balsamic.
For those looking to keep things light, the cauliflower soup, Dalmatian style mussels, or vegan salad with beetroot, bulgar and smoked tofu will do. You can always choose Zindandel’s cheese and charcuterie platters, too.
The stars of the show are in the main courses of the menu, where you’ll find a rump steak with potatoes, pancetta, and bearnaise sauce, duck breast with a sour cherry demiglace, or a pork fillet wrapped in pancetta. The lamb shank is slow-cooked with potato mash and fava beans, the Hama fish baked with zucchini, leeks, carrot and posip, while the skuta-stuffed squid is decorated with semi-dried tomatoes and hummus.
To complete your meal, satisfy your sweet tooth with a warm pumpkin cake, sticky date pudding, Sissy pancakes, or kadaif cannoli.
You can explore the entire Zinfandel winter menu on their website here and try it in Split today!

October 17, 2019 - Are you on the hunt for the best steak in Split? Look no further.
When the seasons change in Dalmatia, so do our diets - and after a summer of fish and white wine, we are more than ready for a winter of beef, beer, and a heavy red.
So, where should you bite into beef in Split? A look at the best steakhouses and BBQ’s in the city.
Chops Grill: When it comes to steak in Split, it’s hard to argue with Split’s one and only authentic steakhouse - Chops Grill. Making meat lovers on Marmontova happy for years, Chops brings the best beef to the table and is a pioneer in introducing new cuts to the people of Split - like Wagyu beef. Boasting prime meats from all over the world, Chops is where you’ll want to park for the night if you’re after a variety of cuts, from Black Angus prime rib to Tomahawk on the bone, that is guaranteed cooked to perfection. And if we had to rate them on the tender and juiciness scale, we’d call it an 11/10.
Toro Grill: If you’re after something simple, quick, but 100% quality, Toro is your number one. With orders taken at a counter and only high-top outdoor seating available, Toro isn’t trying to impress you with their looks - because they know their beef will bring you back for more. This steak shack’s menu isn’t decorated with ingredients you can’t pronounce, but instead gives you the option to choose your cut of meat, and a few sides if you’re hungry - like French fries, grilled veggies, or a seasonal salad. Whether you want the beef tenderloin, ribeye, Chicago steak or T-bone, your steak will be traditionally cooked on the grill, without all the bells and whistles.

Bosso Steak House: Popular in the summer thanks to its outdoor alleyway seating and live music, Bosso is a casual steak house with BBQ favorites. However, what sets Bosso apart is that their meat is cooked in a special KOPA oven, which is a grill and charcoal combo that exudes a unique BBQ aroma. Bosso busts out menu items such as burgers, spare ribs, and beef cuts that range from T-bone and ribeye to Tomahawk.
Bosso Facebook
Bakra: Local favorite Bakra might be known for their pizzas as much as their steaks, but it’s good to know that they fail to disappoint in any area they conquer. Just outside of the historic city center, Bakra is praised for its homemade Croatian BBQ, where you can find regional delights such as cevapcici and sausages, though we think their steak BBQ is right on par. From matured ribeye to Chicago steak, t-bone to steaks drenched in sauces like truffle or green pepper, Bakra isn't afraid to do it all. We give this Split institution an A+ for atmosphere, too.
Bakra Facebook
Mandrill Brewpub and Kitchen: Brand spankin’ new to the scene is Mandrill, though you might already know them for their pizza and beer. Moving on from the simple menu offered at their original location, Mandrill is taking its place on Split's meat stage with a specialty in sous vide. However, they're not afraid to pump out burgers, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, and, of course, the tried and true Tomahawk steak. If you’re looking for something different, you’ll want to get after their beef brisket or chicken wings!

Yes, we know, this is just part of Split’s steak scene. What are your favorite places to beef out in Split?

September 26, 2019 - Split's breakfast and brunch scene are thriving in 2019. A guide to the best places to begin your morning.
The way our mornings begin usually depict precisely how the rest of our day will look. For example, if we ‘wake up on the wrong side of the bed’, we’re grumpy, irritable, and usually, have no reason for being so. But it always doesn’t have to be that way.
Today, we’re bringing you a list of reasons good enough to make you jump out of bed buzzing in the morning - and they come in the form of the best breakfast and brunch spots in Split this year.
New to Split this year, Fig quickly became one of the hottest locations in the city center. Popular for their California toast, vegetarian breakfast burrito, and spicy eggs, Fig also offers breakfast cocktails like Bloody Marys, and prides themselves on their baked goods made in-house, from fig scones to New York-style cheesecake. Did we mention they’re located just around the corner from Peristyle inside the ancient Augubio Palace?
Split’s favorite steakhouse has so much more to offer than beef - and breakfast is one of them. Blended smoothies boasting almond butter and berries or super greens is a foolproof way to kick off your morning at Chops, that is, before you dive into the rest of the menu. Veggie omelets, poached eggs served with avocado or Caprese-style, breakfast tortillas, American pancakes and the classic Chops Breakfast served up with grilled sausages, scrambled eggs, pancetta, and mini tomatoes - how could one go wrong?
A wine bar that also serves brunch? Sign us up! Known for their extensive selection of Croatian wine and stellar charcuterie platters, Zindanfel is king at brunch, too. If you had one glass too many the night before, make the morning right with their eggs Benedict on an English muffin or brunch baguette with eggs, ham, rocket, and aioli. And you only need to get there before 2 pm!
Farmer’s omelets? Check. Eggs Benedict? Check. And a world of fixings for you to choose? Double-check! Ciri Biri Bela is another showstopper this summer, and it’s not hard to see why. Not only is it guaranteed organic, but you can choose from the best of everything - like NY bagels to muesli, Croatian pancakes to donuts, French toast, banana bread or apple strudel, and, of course, a plethora of egg dishes, smoked meat and cheese platters, fruit salads, and fresh juices and smoothies. And this is just breakfast. Check out their brunch menu here.
Kat’s Kitchen (and Kat’s Grab ’n’ Go)
Riding the health kick wave, Kat’s opened last year to ensure the people of Split had the most colorful and clean creations at their disposal. Oven-baked organic omelets, an egg white omelet with smoked salmon, warm oatmeal cooked in coconut milk, homemade granola, and sweet and savory croissants are just some of what’s on offer at Kat’s. And if you need a healthy fix quick, try Kat’s central Grab ’n’ Go!
Because all wine bars should serve breakfast, right? Zeru’s breakfast menu consists of banana and almond French toast, quiche, omelets, ham and eggs, homemade smoothies, and fluffy croissants. Not only are they one of the most affordable breakfast spots in town, but you can also take your breakfast to go!
Located super central in Split’s Pjaca, Bepa believes that the best things in life are sweet, which is exhibited in their homemade waffles that can be prepared in three different ways. But if you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, Bepa boasts a classic English breakfast, poached eggs with avocado, an omelet with cream cheese, baby spinach and leek, and a potato egg hash.
One of the breakfast and brunch pioneers in Split is Brasserie on 7, and if you’ve walked down the Split Riva, chances are, you know it well. From their Big Breakfast which boasts poached eggs, hollandaise, ham, sausage and sourdough bread, to cinnamon ricotta French toast, egg white omelettes, classic eggs Benedict to a superfood favorites chia pudding and açai bowls, B7 goes one step above by offering a range of 100% fresh juices (and you could add bubbles, too).
This funky and fun foodie favorite serves breakfast until noon, and we hear the cinnamon rolls are divine. You can also try scrambled eggs served with smoked salmon or sirloin, açai bowls, scrambled eggs on toast, chia pots, and fresh juices. We promise you’ll enjoy the quirky names for menu items, too.
If you’re in the Varos area and need a quick breakfast fix - this is where you’ll want to go. While Perpetuum offers nothing too fancy, you’ll be more than satisfied by hearty egg dishes, usually served with crusty bread and cured meat and cheese. We hear the prices are friendly, too.
Superfood Healthy Food Factory
Yet another health food sanctuary to add to the list, Superfood has it all. From smoothies to açai bowls, a healthier version of pancakes, eggs served every way and protein-packed ways to start your day - you can’t go wrong. It’s also important to note that Superfood is super friendly to vegans and vegetarians!
Another Split establishment that focuses on healthy, clean, and fresh food, Roots serves up eggs Benedict, açai bowls, fried eggs, smoothies, omelets, and some seriously tempting baked goods. They also honor their plant-based, vegan, or vegetarian guests with prices that don’t break the bank!
Bistro Roots Facebook
If you’re trying to kill time before boarding your catamaran or ferry to your next island destination, Terminal F is conveniently located by the port to ensure you’ll get there on time with full bellies. A basic breakfast menu with omelets, yogurt and granola, and French toast, your breakfast with a view could come at a bigger price tag than some others in Split.
This plant-based, vegetarian restaurant opened in Split just in time to catch the summer season - and we are not complaining. Their focus is on serving clean, hearty, and healthy dishes, so full of flavor you won’t miss the meat - and they’ve succeeded. Pandora’s breakfast options range from fresh and fruity açai bowls to American pancakes and scrambled eggs. They have matcha lattes, too!
Pandora Facebook
One of Split’s hottest restaurants is also known to serve up breakfast and brunch options. While there aren’t too many menu items to choose from, Bokeria offers truffle eggs, yogurt with fresh fruit and granola, prosciutto and cheese on toast and fresh-squeezed OJ.
Everyone’s favorite wrap place in Split also serves breakfast! Whether you want the English Cow (like an English Breakfast), Red Cow (like shakshuka), your eggs scrambled, or a variety of smoothie bowls, Sexy Cow serves breakfast until 11 am!
Acai bowls, smoothies, and fresh cold-pressed juices - if you’re into something light, Maka Maka will do you right.

September 20, 2019 - Just three days away from welcoming a new season, we thought we’d reminisce on another summer gone with some of the new establishments making a buzz in Split this year.
If you’re a Split local, you’ll most likely find it hard to do much of anything during the summer because a) you work in tourism b) you work in hospitality or c) you only feel safe in the comfort of your air-conditioned apartment away from the crowds.
However, unless you truly do live in a cave, you’re aware that Split is a continually evolving Dalmatian hotspot that has been milking the perks of its rebirth for almost a decade - and with each new season comes a swarm of new swanky establishments for Split citizens and tourists to enjoy.
Thus, we present some of the conversation-starting stations new to the Split scene this season.
MoNIKa’s Wine Bar: Located at the beginning of Varos in the Sperun area, MoNIKa’s Wine Bar opened in April to the delight of wine drinkers and charcuterie enthusiasts. Securing the number one spot on Tripadvisor more than a few times this summer, MoNIKa’s serves up Croatian wines, meat and cheese plates, seafood tapas and wine tasting evenings.
Brutal Bar & Kitchen: If there is one new place tourists are raving about in Split this summer, it’s Brutal. Also a TripAdvisor frontrunner, Brutal is a small alleyway charm that belongs on the streets of San Francisco or New York. Praised for its open kitchen, cool countertops, and a menu that ranges from roasted tomato carpaccio to pork belly lettuce wraps, eggplant ratatouille and monkfish ‘cigars’, how could one go wrong?
Pandora Greenbox: The sister to the already popular Split hotspot Corto Maltese, Pandora opened just in time to catch careful and clean eating tourists in Split. Priding themselves on plant-based meals, cold-pressed juices, cocktails, and gluten-free craft beer, Pandora’s nature-inspired interior design will make you feel as if you’re far away from Split - and most likely in the middle of a rainforest. With something for the vegans, vegetarians, gluten-free-ers, and clean eaters, Pandora is undoubtedly a new Split favorite.
Fig: Just around the corner from Peristyle is Fig, though you might already be familiar with the name thanks to the island of Hvar. A popular new breakfast spot in the center that boasts California toast and breakfast burritos, Fig is no stranger to the lunch and dinner crowd, either - with veggie or chicken korma, Mexican pulled pork and a BBQ and bacon house burger among your feasting choices.
Mini Bota Oyster & Sushi Bar: Because we know you remember Bota Sare, which said goodbye to its restaurant space last year. However, sushi lovers now get to taste Mini Bota, their new, smaller alleyway spot where you can get ‘direct access to the ingredients, the chefs and the preparation process’. Offering pick up or dine in, get your rolls, sashimi, and nigiri here!
Historic Downtown Grill: New to the Stari Plac area, Downtown Grill specializes in, well, you guessed it - grill. Said to have some of the best burgers in Split, seafood options and live music, Downtown Grill is also praised for their homemade lemonades and grappas.
Superfood Healthy Food Factory: The second Superfood location opened up just before the summer season near Prokurative. Known for their matcha lattes, raw cakes, protein platters, spelt pizza, gazpacho and seafood dishes, Superfood has something for everyone - even Split’s vegan guests.
Funky George: A new fast food joint can be found at the top of Bosanska - meet Funky George. Good for cheap and meaty sandwiches topped with grilled peppers and pickles, homemade pretzels, American pancakes, pumpkin and sweet potato fries, smoothies and craft beer, Funky George has become a staple for Split’s bar crowd.
Food Factory: Live and raw, that’s what you’ll find at this new Stari Plac spot. A ‘bistro takeaway concept and a retail store’, Food Factory is run by Darko Jurić who believes in bringing gourmet plant-based cuisine to Split. Things like cold brew coffee, smoothies, desserts, and a takeaway menu including wakame corn crockets or plant-based burgers are just part of the show.
Kava 22: If you’re into coffee, and we mean really, really into coffee, you’ll fall in love with Kava at first sip. Their second Croatian location after they opened Kava 37 in Hvar town, Kava 2 is a short walk outside of the city center by the President Hotel, and has been making waves in the Split coffee-loving crowd. From a perfectly poured flat white to piccolos, cold brew tonic and beans for sale, you’ll head to Kava if you know what’s good for you.

August 13, 2019 - As we approach the halfway point of August, we are well and truly sailing through the peak of summer in Split. We are now more than accustomed to sweat-drenched clothes, tan lines, and living in our swimsuits at the beach or under air conditioners. We’re now at the point where we're counting down the days of summer to end, knowing that we’ll be wishing for it the moment the first rain falls. And we’re probably already regretting all of the things we didn’t get to do this summer, adding it to our 2020 summer bucket list, which will be hard to cross off then, too.
And while summer in Split has many perks, we’d like to argue that is gastronomy is one of the biggest.
This is where Chops Grill comes in. A summer sanctuary tucked away in the shade of Split’s busy center. It’s the perfect pop-in for a glass of wine and a feed, a hero for big groups, and a consistent and all-around satisfying chophouse that can do no wrong.
But the real beauty lies in Chops’ beef, as it should at every standout steakhouse. Since Chops Grill offers prime cuts from all over the world, we thought we’d walk you through some of its best.
Like the beef tenderloin, a filet mignon from local grain-fed Simmental beef. And if you want to travel to another part of the world, you can try the Wagyu beef striploin from Kyoto, Japan.
Chops Grill also offers a Black Angus prime rib with the bone, which is certified beef from Nebraska, corn-fed, and wet-aged. The Black Angus T-bone also comes from Nebraska, is corn-fed and wet-aged.
But you can even travel down to South America to try the striploin steak, a Black Angus grain-fed beef from Uruguay that is wet-aged, or the Black Angus ribeye steak that is Argentinian grass-fed Black Angus beef.
Moving over to Ireland, you can try the Kettyle® strip steak from "Kettyle Irish Foods”, or the Black Angus ribeye steak which is Irish grain-fed Black Angus beef and wet-aged. And if you’re really hungry? The Kettyle® tomahawk steak on the bone for two people is dry-aged Irish Black Angus ribeye, which also won two stars from the Great Taste Award in 2013.
But that’s just part of it. The T-bone steak comes from European Simmental beef that is wet-aged, the Black Angus beef tenderloin is from "Tyson Fresh Meats" Black Angus beef that is corn-fed and wet-aged, as is the Black Angus ribeye.
If you’re interested in trying any of the beef presented above, or want to entice yourself with someone else off the menu, you can find everything available at Chops here.

August 6, 2019 - As we mark the halfway point of summer in Split, we start to contemplate a few particular summer thoughts: Did I swim enough? Am I tan enough? Did I travel enough? And perhaps, most importantly: Did I eat enough?
Fortunately, the last one is the easiest to resolve, and we have just the right place to settle this pressing summer situation for good.
To ensure you’re fuelled up for the sweltering summer days in Split, Zinfandel Food & Wine Bar have crafted a summer brunch menu with specials that pack a punch.
Served every day, this gem inside Diocletian’s Palace has designed meals that are just light enough to keep you rocking that swimsuit while ensuring your bellies are happy and satisfied enough to take on the day.
For example, there is never a bad time to start your day with a classic, like Zindanfel’s Eggs Benedict, served with poached eggs, deluxe ham and hollandaise atop an English muffin. And if you’re partial to baguettes, you can also try the Brunch Baguette, complete with eggs, ham, rocket, and aioli. Both items are served until 2 pm.
If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, the Zinfandel steak salad futures lamb’s lettuce, roasted peppers, zucchini, and mustard, or the classic beef burger will entice you with caramelized onion, pancetta, lettuce, tomatoes, and aioli.
For those looking for something on the lighter side, Zinfandel’s burrata is dressed up with mesclun greens, basil, and almond pesto, olives, cherry tomatoes, and pickled peppers, or the housemate ‘pecipala’ is a colorful dish of roasted zucchini, peppers, smoked mussels, skuta cheese, and hollandaise. If your stomach is not grumbling yet, we don’t think we’re the problem.
If you’re not an early bird and prefer to load up on the calories in the evening hours, Zinfandel also offers an impressive lunch and dinner menu, which you can find here.
Zinfandel Food & Wine Bar is located at Marulićeva ul. 2, 21000, in Split.
For all other information, you can visit their website.

June 22, 2019 - Have you savored in the seafood side of Chops Grill yet?
It’s officially summer, and now that we are one day into the new season, we thought we’d welcome this new spell with something that Split does best - seafood.
We know that summer is as good an excuse as any to increase your seafood intake, that is, especially if you’re frolicking around Dalmatia. But some places do seafood better than most, and we’d like to consider Chops Grill one of the best.
Sure, they’re known for their steaks, and boy, do we love them, but for those of you looking for something a bit lighter, easier on the figure, or as the perfect complement to a summer day, we’re going to suggest you dig into the seafood side of the menu at Chops Grill.
Here’s why.
Reason number 1: Chops Grill offers lobster, yes, lobster on their menu! Namely, you can get a whole live Mediterranean lobster cut in half and grilled; served with creamy rice, citrus dressing and a Caesar dressing infused with anchovies.
Reason number 2: They stick to the classics, like langoustines (or as we like to call them, ‘scampi) prepared in Dalmatia’s savory red ‘’buzara’’ sauce with tomatoes, white wine, and garlic. And you get to enjoy this dish with spaghetti.
Reason number 3: Their selection of fish general, which you can try individually, or thanks to the ‘Chops Duet for 2’, which consists of a medley from their seafood menu. If you’re up for digging into grilled scampi, whole sea bass, tuna steak, salmon, swordfish and monkfish, served with Dalmatian potatoes and grilled vegetables, you’re in for a treat.
It would only make sense to begin your seafood feast with an appetizer from the sea, like shrimp pâté, vegetable and shrimp soup, or Mediterranean risotto - and if you're feeling dangerous, have you seen their dessert menu?
It's safe to say that this steakhouse packs in the seafood, and you won't have trouble pleasing anyone in your dinner party by dining at Chops Grill.
You can find the full menu at Chops Grill here, and follow them on Facebook here.
