57,000 Travelers at Split Airport, 75,000 at Ferry Port this Weekend

While the crowds thin in other Dalmatian hotspots this summer, Split is experiencing quite the opposite - and no, it’s not just because of Ultra Europe.

While Split’s accommodation may be bit emptier this season due to, well, a surplus of private accommodation, the city is anything but.

This weekend, more than 100,000 passengers from all over the world will travel through the Split Airport and Ferry Port, with projections that many will stay in Split and not continue their travels to other parts of Dalmatia, Splitski Dnevnik reports.

Mate Melvan from Split Airport said that a total of 112 aircraft will take off and land on Saturday, which would bring 30,000 passengers, while on Sunday, there would be 104 planes with 27,000 passengers.

“This weekend, Split Airport expects a total of 57,000 passengers, and we can say that the peak of arrivals and departures have begun,” Melvan said.

Even more travelers will pass through the Split Ferry Port this weekend. Jelena Ivulić of Jadrolinija said that the Split Ferry Port estimates 75,000 passengers and 14,000 vehicles on Friday, Saturday, Saturday, and Sunday.

"Due to the greater pressure of vehicles, we sent an extra line from Split to Supetar at 11:30, and another at 2:45. On Monday, we expect even bigger traffic since the Ultra Europe festival continues to the islands of Brač, Hvar, and Vis,” she added.

You might recall that last weekend, the Split Airport and Ferry Port saw the arrivals and departures of about 100,000 passengers, which was a record weekend. Namely, passenger traffic during the first weekend of July at Split Airport was about five to six percent higher compared to the first weekend of July last year and is said to increase every coming weekend until mid-August. That same weekend, the Split Ferry Port welcomed 47,530 passengers and 8,790 vehicles.

The weekend before that, from June. 28-30, Split Airport welcomed 212 aircraft, which brought 52,000 passengers from more than a hundred world destinations, and from that Friday to Sunday, more than 70,000 passengers and more than 13,000 vehicles traveled through the Split Ferry Port.

From June 21 to 23, Split estimated 112,000 travelers from Croatia, around Europe and the world thanks to airplanes, ships, ferries, and catamarans.

And the weekend before that, on June 15th, which officially marks the start of the tourist season, figures revealed that 140,000 passengers traveled through the Split Airport and Ferry Port.

The 65th Split Summer opens at Peristyle on Sunday, July 14, by the mayor of Split, Andro Krstulović Opara, as an envoy of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, reports Dalmatinski Portal.

Minister of Culture of the Republic of Croatia Nina Obuljen Koržinek will attend the opening ceremony, among other elite guests. After the opening ceremony at 21:00, as the first festival performance, the opera ensemble of the Croatian National Theater in Split will premiere ‘Rigoletto’ by Giuseppe Verdi under the guidance of master Ivo Lipanovic and directed by Dražen Siriščević.

The beginning marks another edition of the long-standing theatrical festival, which will feature a total of 37 opera, drama, ballet, concert titles, exhibitions, film projections, and a literary promotion in a total of 48 performances until August 14th. The festival is organized by the Croatian National Theater in Split, under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Croatia and the auspices of the City of Split and Split-Dalmatia County.

The festival will take place in 18 locations, among which, apart from those in Split, are outdoor stages on the Mosor slopes near Sitno Gornji, Salona, Vrlika, Gata and Makarska. The 65th Split Summer is realized in cooperation with other Split and Croatian cultural institutions, namely: Ivan Meštrović Museum, Center for Culture and Lifelong Learning, Pula Film Festival, Split Art Gallery, Kula Split Gallery, Split City Museum, Fotoklub Split, and the project for the promotion of cultural heritage through performing arts Heritart, co-funded by the Creative Europe of the European Union.

In addition to the many guest and repertoire programs, there will be three premiere performances at the festival. In addition to Verdi's Rigoletto in the opera program, the drama ensemble of HNK Split will perform 'Caligula' written by Alberto Camus and Jean Racine in the monumental garden of the Meštrović Gallery, and the ballet of HNK Split will perform 'Piazzolla/Stravinski' on the last festival day in the outdoor ambiance of Sustipan. The spectacle will feature five young European choreographers including Igor Kirov, Stephen Delattre, Kristian Lever, Claudio Cangialosi, and Douglas Lee.

Social Network Analysis: Dubrovnik and Split Most Popular Tourist Destinations in Croatia

July 13, 2019 - Mediatoolkit analyzed the popularity of Croatian tourism on social networks. The results show that Dubrovnik and Split are a hit on social media.

The Croatian National Tourist Board recently published the tourism numbers for June. Although it was rumored that this tourist season would be one of the weaker in several years, data for June still shows that the number of tourists increased in the first six months. Compared to last year, Croatia was visited by 6% more tourists, while the number of overnight stays grew by 3%.

Given the different perspectives on what this year's summer season will be, the Zagreb-based technology company Mediatoolkit analyzed how Croatia was perceived on social networks from 10 June to 10 July.

Namely, Croatia was mentioned 72,869 times during this period, which represents an increase of 222.13%. On a daily level, Croatia was mentioned an average of 2,400 times, while this number will increase as the season moves forward. For comparison, one of Croatia’s major tourism competitors, Italy, was mentioned about 7,500 times a day in the same period, while the numbers for Greece and Turkey are similar to Croatia.

Compared to the previous period, the number of impressions increased by as much as 18,842% and now exceeds 34 million. The good news is that Croatia, as a tourist destination, is mentioned on the web and social networks around the world.

Most of the announcements come from the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy, though they are just some of the countries that have increased the number of tourist arrivals this year according to HTZ’s data. Croatia is written in Italian the most on Twitter, while German and English are the highest on Instagram.

The majority of the mentions about Croatia were written in a positive context, namely 89.2%. Tourists mostly praise the natural beauty and the sea, and the hashtag #croatiafulloflife was used 13,273 times.

Instagram is by far the most widely used channel that publishes about Croatia. According to the analysis, 84.8% of the mentions come from Instagram, while Twitter is the second most common channel with 7.5%.

Interestingly, Croatia was declared the most sought after country on TripAdvisor in 2019. This news attracted the attention of international media such as Forbes, but in Croatia, this news was not shared much in the media.

The top three destinations in Croatia with the largest number of visitors in the first six months, according to HTZ’s data, are Rovinj, Dubrovnik, and Zagreb. When it comes to social networks and the web, only two cities are mentioned the most - Dubrovnik (12,759 mentions) and Split (7,313 mentions). On the other hand, the most visited town of Rovinj has 3,898 references, while Zagreb has 2,592.

Dubrovnik’s mentions are mostly associated with the popular Game Throne series, which is not surprising given that it has significantly increased the popularity of Dubrovnik. King's Landing was mentioned 4,000 times, of which 741 are related to Dubrovnik and 321 to Croatia.

The sudden increase in the number of social network announcements that occurred during the summer season is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, such growth is only confirmed by the marked tourist seasonality and the lack of year-round tourism. On the other hand, the more optimistic side, recommendations are the best way of promoting the country, and tourists full of praise about the beauties of Croatia can motivate others to come. But is everyone interested in just the sun and the sea? We’re not so sure.

Year-round tourism is to some extent present in parts of Croatia. Zagreb is one of the few examples in which attendance is relatively consistent throughout the year, which confirms the latest data. One of the reasons is that throughout the year, Zagreb offers a variety of activities tourists find interesting - like Advent, it's main winter attraction which draws in more and more tourists every year and has been more popular on social networks than Vienna. Various events take place in Zagreb in the summer, the most famous of which is the InMusic festival which attracts a large number of foreign visitors.

Croatia regularly offers excellent opportunities that should be better exploited both for its promotion and to create better content. For example, winning second place at the World Cup, taking home the Davis Cup title, and the final season of Games of Thrones are just some of the things that have influenced the arrival of tourists and can transform Croatia into a year-round tourist sensation.

PHOTOS: New Terminal Opens at Split Airport

The new terminal at Split Airport was solemnly opened on Saturday in the presence of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Traffic Minister Oleg Butković, reports Slobodna Dalmacija and Ex Yu Aviation on Saturday, July 13, 2019.

With this construction and expansion, the passenger terminal gained an additional 34,500 square meters, which makes it a total of 46,000 square meters. The investment is worth 450 million kuna, and is the second-largest investment project in Dalmatia next to the Pelješac bridge.

"The terminal will be three times the size. Instead of the current 14.000 square meters it will have 50,000 square meters. This additional space will enable us to handle 2,500 passengers per hour instead of the current 2,000. That totals 40,000 travelers per day,” said Split Airport General Manager, Lukša Novak, for Ex Yu Aviation.

The new terminal will have a peak load of up to 2,500 passengers per hour, 32 check-in counters where passengers will be assisted, and 10 self-check-in counters, as well as an automated baggage sorting area.

There is also a newly built bus terminal of almost 3,000 square meters, with 50 parking spaces for buses and 900 parking spaces for cars.

By value, it is ranked among the most significant on the national level, and ranks with the airport terminals in Zagreb and Dubrovnik by its complexity and structure.

“This project has improved the airport’s infrastructure, increased its capacity, boosted the quality of service and enabled it to become Schengen-ready in the future. This capacity, with some minor adjustments, will be sufficient for the next twenty years,” Split Airport said.

But the work at Split Airport is far from over. Following the opening, the old passenger building will be combined with the new structure to form a single unit. Split Airport will also overhaul its runway, build a new taxiway and expand the airport to reduce congestion.

The Split Airport project was funded partially through a loan from the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development, while 17.1 million euros were invested from the airport's means.

Split Airport expects 3.3 million passengers this year.

You can view photos of the new terminal on Ex Yu Aviation and Dalmatinski Portal

Ultra Europe Day 1 Survives New Location, No Major Incidents Reported

July 13, 2019 - "Croatia Make Some Noise! We Love You Split!” Ultra Europe officially opened its 7th edition on Friday at this year’s new location, Park Mladeži stadium in Split. Although the new location brought out quite a few skeptics, Ultra Europe once again demonstrated why it is a top event in Europe and why it is worshipped by hundreds of thousands of people around the world.

Another historical night of Croatian music and entertainment was written on Friday, and judging by the reactions of the many international DJ names and their beloved fans, the future and the development the only Ultra event in Europe is looking even brighter.

The 7th edition of Ultra Europe was even enjoyed by Split mayor Andro Krustolivić-Opara and the director of the Split Tourist Board, Alijana Vukšić.

"We will see what the figures are on Monday, as well as the income for tourism workers, for Split and Croatian tourism. This is a big success tonight, that's the main reason for my happiness,  which will continue as long as the festival is fun. All the conditions have already shown that we are going to go to the top,” the mayor said for Splitski Dnevnik.

“These positive young people say it best. One hundred forty countries are here, and we'll talk about the final numbers after Ultra. If everything is as good as it started tonight, it will be one of the most successful Ultra festivals ever,” said Alijana Vukšić for Dalmacija Danas and also commented on the current tourism figures in Split.

“Hotels and the high category of private accommodation have so far been full. We hope that the arrival of these young Ultra guests will fill the rest of the private accommodation.”

Joško Stella, director of the Split-Dalmatia County Tourist Board, repeated the organizer's words that this year's festival sold the most tickets yet.

“You can really see it. Somewhere in the middle of David Guetta’s performance, I saw that the entire terrain and its surroundings were full. The first night is very successful. We have beautiful weather, a great atmosphere, and attendance - it’s a full hit!” Stella said.

"I have to admit I was skeptical at first, but now that I've seen it, I think this is a perfect location and that everything is well organized. All the towns around Split feel the positive effects of this festival. We must not forget that all these DJs like Guetta and others have many followers and is important to them where their concerts are held, and this gives a great marketing effect to Split and the County.”

Before, during and after the first day of Ultra Europe, no significant security incidents have been reported to the Split-Dalmatia County Police by Saturday morning, in the sense of disturbing public order and peace to a greater extent, injuring visitors, or damaging property.

Nine property crimes were reported, while a total of 119 persons, including Croatian and foreign nationals, were arrested, mainly due to the violation of the Drug Abuse Act.

The opening night of Ultra featured David Guetta, The Chainsmokers, and Armin van Buuren.

This will mark the completion of the project to extend the Split Airport, which saw an investment worth 450 million kuna. The official opening will be attended by the Minister of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković, and the arrival of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković is also expected.

The passenger terminal is now larger by an additional 34,500 square meters, and totals 46,000 square meters, with a peak load of up to 2,500 passengers per hour.

By value, the Split Airport project is ranked among the most significant on the national level and next to the airport terminals in Zagreb and Dubrovnik by its complexity and structure.

Executed on a total surface of nearly 80,000 square meters, the Split Airport project has brought improvements to airport infrastructure, building capacity, increases passenger and employee safety, improves the quality of service, and creates conditions following Schengen criteria, as well as those of international and domestic traffic.

These capacities, with minimum changes, are sufficient for the next twenty years and are ready to receive or dispatch up to 5 million passengers a year. In 2019, the expected number of passengers at Split Airport is 3.3 million.

Ultra Europe Begins at Park Mladeži: Everything You Need to Know

The wait is over - the 7th edition of Ultra Europe officially begins on Friday at Park Mladeži in Split. The organizers announced on Thursday that everything is ready for the most important international event in Croatia, and this year, there are even new records!

Namely, Ultra Europe boasts the biggest stage and production ever seen in the region, the largest number of visitors, the biggest music stars of today and an even more spectacular fireworks show, which the organizers promise will promote Split in the best light.

Park Mladeži opens its doors every day at 7 pm, and on Monday, the musical journey continues to the islands of Brač, Hvar and Vis.

So, what do you need to know before coming to the festival? The main entrance for visitors is located along Ul. Hrvatske Mornarice, and the new location, due to its width and spaciousness, allows for a faster flow, which means it should be less crowded and offer a better experience with security measures that are at the highest possible level. Park Mladeži is said to be much larger than the previous location, and in its central area, which is the size of three football fields, an additional 20,000 people can be accommodated. This location will be the heart of the festival itself, linking all three stages and offering entertainment by many festival partners and a variety of food and drink. A better experience will also be had by the VIP guests who can expect a special entrance and entry to the lodges located on three floors.

The organizers are especially proud of the main stage, which is 16 meters tall and 80 meters wide, with over 150 square feet of LED display, to make it the greatest stage ever set in the region. And we must not forget that one of the trademarks of the festival is undoubtedly the 360 fireworks that will be even more vibrant this year!

On Friday, festival goers can enjoy the main stage acts Lucky Z, Plastik Funk, David Guetta, Gud Vibrations, Nicky Romero, The Chainsmokers and Armin van Buuren. On Saturday, the lineup reveals Justin Oh, Kryoman, Lost King, DJ Snake, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, No Redemption, Afrojack and Alesso, while Moe, Vanillaz, Cheat Codes, Rezz, Above & Beyond, Jeffrey Sotorius and megastars Swedish House Mafia will be in charge of closing the seventh edition of the festival on Sunday, July 14, 2019.

Most festival goers are eagerly awaiting the performance of DJ-trio Swedish House Mafia, which includes Split on the map of concerts as part of their comeback tour. The gigantic main stage will be completely redone for their performance, and the announced production and special effects will be a special surprise for all visitors. It will be a show the entire world will talk about and a music treat that should not be missed.

No less exciting is the ever spectacular RESISTANCE stage whose industrial designs look like Brodosplit cranes, linking the past and the future for the largest and most modern production underground stage in the world. On Friday, the stage will welcome Rory Lynam, Steve Fidelak, Patrice Baumel, Sasha b2b Nic Fanciulli, Maceo Plex, and Adam Beyer, DanceElecricPhilipe will open Saturday with I Elio Riso, Art Department, Jamie Jones, Richie Hawtin, and Marco Carola, while Sunday is booked for Sk! Y, Peru Fullhouse, Jon Rundell, Dubfire, Joseph Capriati, and Carl Cox.

The UMF Stage will host numerous new faces of the international electronic scene. Electro House, main room house, deep underground, and progressive house styles will be played by Richard Lowe, Miss Faith, Kosta Radman, Mike & Me, Iris Santo, Lorenzo, Drumelody, while local pop-rock group Vatra will debut at the festival.

Although the organizers advise not bringing a bag to the festival, if it is necessary, it must be plastic and transparent and not larger than 33x43 cm. Small clutch bags and fanny packs will be allowed. Professional photos and video cameras are banned, but can be taken with GoPro and other action cameras. It's Finally Here: Public Bicycles Now Available in Split!

July 11, 2019 - Although the City of Split will officially open the public bicycle system on Thursday at 6 pm, the city's citizens and tourists could ride public bicycles located at the stations on the Riva, at the Joker Shopping Center, the Sukoišana bus station and Stari Plac since Wednesday.

As part of the pilot project "Split Parking", which has taken over all the work, a total of 20 electric and 30 classic bicycles will be free to use at eight frequently visited locations in the city.

The project will last 30 months and aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the overburdened areas of urban traffic in Split.

“On Thursday, July 11th at 6 pm, we invite all citizens and tourists who reside in the city of Split to attend the opening of the public bicycle system within the EU project REMEDIO. The Mayor of the City of Split Mr. Andro Krstulović Opara will be in front of the church of Sv. Frane on the Riva to officially open the public bicycle system, and everyone present will be able to ride the bikes for free. Come and check out all the benefits of a public bicycle system, and drive a classic or electric bicycle completely free of charge,” said the City of Split in their announcement.

The public bicycle stations will be available to citizens and tourists on the Riva in front of Sv. Frane, at the parking lot of Split 3, at the Žnjan plateau, in the parking lot beside Joker, at Sukoišanska, near Stari Plac, and the student housing at Spinut and the Campus.

The total project value was 267,500.00 euro, of which 85% was financially covered for the City of Split.

Is implementing proper cycling infrastructure in the city next?

Is Split Full? VERY. Are Apartments Empty? VERY. The Shocking Explanation.

July 11, 2019 - Official statistics show a strong season in Split, but apartment owners complain of poor bookings. So who is right? Both, and here is the shocking reason why.

I have been writing about tourism in Croatia for 9 years now, but I rarely track statistics on how things change each year. In retrospect, I wish I had.

But there is one thing I check each year, and it is a true barometer of one of the discussions of the moment - tourism in Split. The official tourism statistics tell us that this is another bumper year - the best ever for the first half of 2019, as TCN reported a couple of days ago

And yet many apartment owners are complaining that the season is terrible and they are having less bookings.

Both sides can't be right, can they? Well, in this case, yes they can.

This has been a very strange season in general - and not just the weather. The tourism chiefs tell us that tourism in Croatia is up yet again for another year. This obsession with numbers and overnights will hopefully mature into something more meaningful such as the quality of the experience in time, but numbers we have to deal with.

My impression of this season is that Istria seems to be doing fine, but Dalmatia - and particularly the islands are down. One island tourist board director told me this month that if the islands are 10% down on last year, they will be happy. The empty roads, lack of waiting times at toll roads, borders and ferries all point to this. But things are busy in the big cities such as Split and Dubrovnik.

But back to tracking those statistics.

Back in 2013, when Ultra Europe began, there was a lot of media attention. I was curious how the addition of such a major event in peak season, attracting tens of thousands of tourists into the heart of the peak season would affect accommodation availability and prices. On the first day of Ultra in Split in 2013, I checked Booking.com to see how many places were available. If you weren't full during Ultra in July, when would you be?

There were only two places available in all Split on Booking. Cheapest place was 200 euro a night.

I checked again last year on the first day of Ultra - 441 apartments available that night, with the cheapest place starting at 27 euro. Quite a difference.

Was Split less full in 2018 in July than in July 2013? Not at all - way busier. So the only explanation could be that there were more beds on the market.

I checked again this morning on the first day of Ultra. Some 474 properties for rent, with the cheapest again at 27 euro.

About the same as last year then, or is it? I had read news articles about lots of new beds coming onto the Split market for this season. So if the availability today was about the same as last year, then that should mean that with those extra beds, there are MORE tourists than last year in the city, not less.

I went in search of the official statistics, and my jaw hit the floor. Not only does it explain why Split is full but apartments are empty, but it also shows just what an impact tourism has had on the city once known as the Gateway to the Islands in less than a decade. Take a look for yourself and draw your own conclusions.

split-accommodation-2.PNG

In 2010, there were just 4,454 private accommodation units in the Split area. The total number of beds was 7,490 (including hostels and hotels etc).

In 2019, there were 24,002 private accommodation units in the Split area. The total number of the beds in the city was 32,576 (including hostels and hotels etc).

I just hope not too many owners of the 24,002 units took out expensive loans to be paid off by bumper rentals.

Oversupply? I think so.

By contrast, hotel beds increased from just 2,073 to 3,689 in the same period, less than double. Hostel beds went from 554 to 1,317, less than triple.

So looking at the Booking availability in this context, it would seem that Split is busier than it has ever been, and more apartments than ever ar empty.

Thinking of converting your property into tourism rentals in Split this winter? Unless you have something REALLY special, perhaps time to think again.

All Services Ready to Go for 7th Ultra Europe at Park Mladeži

The organizers of the Ultra Europe festival, which will be held in Split for the seventh time in a row from July 12 to 14, 2019, held a coordination meeting with Split Mayor Andro Krstulović Opara, his associates and representatives of the city utility companies and emergency services, all to ensure the readiness for the upcoming international event, reports Splitski Dnevnik on July 11, 2019.

They concluded that year after year, the city and emergency services function excellently and are a good team that is ready to meet new challenges. It was especially demanding this year when notice of the new festival location was announced just a few weeks ago.

There was also talk about traffic solutions, increased firefighting, police, and emergency assistance staff. Then, the meeting discussed additional bus lines and cleaning the stadium and contact zones after the festival. The meeting concluded that all the services are fully prepared. Marin Grubišić, on behalf of MPG Live, the organizer of Ultra Europe, was grateful for the cooperation and support of the City and utility companies around the entire project.

Representatives of MPG Live also reported that they were in constant contact with the nearest neighbors of Park Mladeži with whom they found solutions to numerous questions and concerns in order to ensure their days would function as normal. The organizers said they are pleased with the degree of cooperation with the citizens of Split, especially those who live in the immediate vicinity and concluded that there is a positive climate around this year's Ultra and they believe that three days of good entertainment and an excellent image of Split will be expected for the seventh time.
