September 02, 2020 - Have you ever heard of specialty coffee? It is grown in specific and ideal climates and made from unique flavors. If you are a lover of good coffee, then you should pay a visit to these places with amazing specialty coffee in Split!
What is the difference between regular and specialty coffee? The difference is that specialty coffee is grown at higher elevations, is traceable, and processed carefully once harvested. Furthermore, every step from growing to roasting is monitored and controlled to constantly work on improving the quality of the coffee. Tastes are a result of the special characteristics and composition of the soils in which they are produced. If you haven't tried coffee from Brazil, Ethiopia and Colombia so far, it's time to visit some of these cool cafes in Split, which, in addition to excellent coffee, attract people with their modern and cute space design.
D16
D16 is an enthusiastic team of baristas and specialty coffee roasters from Split. This charming coffee shop is located in the heart of Diocletian’s Palace, in Dominisova Street 16, from whose abbreviation the name of the cafe itself derives. Given that Marco Antonio de Dominis was a scientist who investigated the dispersion of white light, their signature light roast is called the Dominis blend. In addition to standard coffee drinking in a coffee shop, the D16 offers packaged blends and single-origin coffee, bottled cold brew, and merchandise for wholesale and retail sales.
Kava2
Kava in Hvar and Kava2 in Split are specialty coffee shops owned by Ivana and Marko, a young couple who fell in love with tasting coffees somewhere along the way. The offer of their cafes consists of coffee, homemade ice cream, cookies and croissants, and natural juices. Also, you can buy handmade coffee cups and take home with you as a souvenir. You can find this cute cafe on the address Ante Starčevića 2/1.
4coffee soul food
If you check the comments on Tripadvisor, you can read that this is "the best coffee ever" and the place for "real coffee geeks". At this famous location next to the Đardin, you can always find people enjoying their coffee, sitting outside on the chairs. Apart from top quality coffee, this place is known for its great atmosphere and baristas who are very passionate about the job they do.
Split Coffee Roasters
Two friends, Ivan and Matej, once thought they could create something great. And they did it! They started a newly opened cafe in Split and thus realized their dream, after many years of experience with roasting, brewing, and competing. They want to take the coffee experience to the next level. When the road takes you to Split and you want to enjoy a fantastic coffee, visit the address Trogirska 8.

Croatian Aviation reports that Israir, an Israeli airline based in Tel Aviv, has resumed traffic on the route between Zagreb and Tel Aviv. The line was not in circulation this year because it is seasonal, and due to the pandemic, the company did not launch it earlier.
Regular flights between Tel Aviv and Zagreb started operating on August 19 this year, and so far 8 rotations have been made in August. The company offers departures on its official website throughout almost the whole of September, and as many as 11 rotations are available on this line:
between September 1 and 6, three flights are announced (Tuesday, Friday, Sunday),
between September 7 and 13, three flights are announced (Monday, Thursday and Friday),
between 14 and 20 September, three flights are announced (Monday, Tuesday and Sunday),
between September 21 and 27, two flights are announced (Friday and Saturday).
In last year's summer flight schedule, the company operated with significantly more weekly departures to Zagreb. Night flights, the only regular flights in the Croatia Airlines network, were operated on the regular line between Tel Aviv and Zagreb.
On the Israir Airlines route to Zagreb, there are A320 aircraft with a capacity of 180 seats.
Furthermore, Croatian Aviation reports that Norwegian Air and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will continue to operate on their scheduled flights from Scandinavia to Split Airport throughout September.
Although there are restrictions when traveling between Croatia and certain Scandinavian countries, the two mentioned airlines will continue to operate on their scheduled flights to Split Airport through September. The number of weekly flights on all routes has decreased compared to July and August.
Norwegian Air operates on three routes in September
Norwegian will operate only to Split Airport this month, with three direct routes from Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen.
Oslo - Split will operate twice a week in September, every Tuesday and Saturday,
Stockholm - Split will operate once a week, every Saturday,
Copenhagen - Split will operate once a week, also on Saturdays.
Scandinavian Airlines flies to Split
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will also keep three routes to Split, from Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Gothenburg. All lines operate once a week, on Saturdays:
Stockholm - Split,
Copenhagen - Split,
Gothenburg - Split.
The Gothenburg - Split route is not for sale on the airline's website, given that it is a charter line. SAS will use A320neo aircraft on all three routes to Split Airport, which have a capacity of 174 seats in the fleet of this carrier.
Croatia Airlines offers one flight a week (Saturdays) on the Split - Copenhagen route, while flights from Zagreb to the Danish capital are daily (certain flights have been canceled on this route).
Finally, although the Polish government announced a ban on flights from several countries from September 2 this year, including flights from Croatia, Croatian Aviation reports that the countries were subsequently revised and Croatia is no longer on the list.
Polish LOT will thus continue to operate on as many as 7 lines to Croatia in September this year:
Warsaw - Zagreb, daily,
Warsaw - Rijeka, once a week, on Sundays (until September 13),
Warsaw - Split, once a week, on Sundays,
Warsaw - Zadar, once a week, on Saturdays,
Rzeszów - Zadar, once a week, on Saturdays (until September 19),
Warsaw - Dubrovnik, four times a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays,
Krakow - Dubrovnik, once a week, on Saturdays.
LOT also planned to operate on the Budapest-Dubrovnik route in September, which was canceled because Hungary has practically closed its borders as of September 1.

August 29, 2020 - During the last weekend in August, the number of passengers at Split Airport decreased significantly, and on Saturday and Sunday, 150 planes should land at Resnik, bringing 20,000 passengers.
Mate Melvan from Split Airport says that in August, the traffic will be at the level of 40% from the same month last year, but that, given the situation around the coronavirus and the measures taken by individual countries, they are extremely satisfied with the results, reports Dalmatinski Portal.
"We expect to be at 550,000 passengers in the first eight months of this year, which are excellent results when we take into account that we had 30,000 passengers in April, May, and June," said Melvan.
As for the forecast for September, some carriers have already canceled the planned flights, and 30 carriers from 50 destinations should fly to Split.
"It is very difficult to predict what will happen in September due to the measures adopted by the Civil Protection Headquarters. However, we can say that we have a large number of flights in the announcement, but it all depends on how much the recommendations of other countries to come to Croatia will affect the decision of passengers to decide to travel," added Melvan.
That this year's season is slowly coming to an end can also be seen at the Split Ferry Port. This is the first weekend in which there are no extra lines to the islands, and it is expected that about 40,000 passengers and 10,000 vehicles will pass through the ferry port this weekend.

August 29, 2020 - Split-Dalmatia County has recorded excellent tourist results so far this season - and far more than expected. However, the latest increase in coronavirus cases and Croatia's inclusion on the red list of some countries, some extremely important markets, is a cause for concern. Split-Dalmatia County Tourist Board director Josko Stella believes that, despite everything, the situation can still be improved.
We still have time; the tourist season is not over yet.
"The situation is not good, it is very difficult now, but we still have time to fix it. It is a great pity because this end of August started very well and was better than we expected, but now it all depends on the period ahead, whether we will curb this situation and reduce the number of new infections. We need to take the situation seriously, discipline ourselves, listen to the Headquarters' recommendations, avoid gatherings and physical contacts," says Stella for Lokalni.Vecernji.hrokalni.Vecernji.hr.
Austria, Slovenia, and Italy put Croatia on the red list, and Germany placed Split-Dalmatia County on theirs. August is currently at 68% compared to last year. The most numerous guests in central Dalmatia are Poles, Germans, Croats, and Czechs, so putting Split-Dalmatia County on the red list in Germany could be the strongest blow so far. And after a dry May in which there was no tourism anywhere and a timid June when about 20% of last year’s result was achieved, things went well. According to data from the eVisitor system, in Split-Dalmatia County, 433,820 guests stayed in commercial accommodation in July, 47 percent of the tourist traffic of last July.
They realized 2,898,993 overnight stays or 54 percent of tourist overnight stays realized in the same month in 2019. There were 22,511 arrivals and 160,649 overnight stays in July, representing 50 percent in arrivals and 49 percent in overnight stays compared to the same month last year. He was pleased with the fact that the same number of German guests stayed in Central Dalmatia in July as last year, who had the same number of overnight stays as last year, which is an exceptional success in this turbulent business year.
"In the first seven months, we realized 39% of overnight stays compared to 2019, but now our situation has become more complicated. After the dismissal from Great Britain, we will see what will happen to the Germans. Those blacklists are changeable, and I hope that we will be able to calm the situation and remove us from the lists. If this hadn't happened, we would have had a great September and October, bookings were great, but if it doesn't improve, I'm afraid of canceled reservations," says Stella.
The dismissals from Germany, however, have not yet begun. The County Tourist Board points out that tourist companies, hosts in family accommodation, marinas, and camps respect strict epidemiological measures and protection standards. The Croatian coast has so far proved to be the safest and most acceptable holiday destination in the Mediterranean this season. That this is the case is evidenced by the daily visits of world-famous people to Split-Dalmatia County and its attractive waters. This sent the best marketing message of our tourism to the world.
However, the deteriorating epidemiological situation has also raised concerns at Split Airport, which had 165 landings and take-offs of commercial aircraft on August's first weekend, carrying more than 30,000 passengers in both directions. Although this is a relatively large number, it was only 35 percent of passengers compared to the same weekend last year. In the first seven months of this year, Split airport, which is connected to 60 destinations worldwide, had a total turnover of 277,000 passengers, and in July alone, this airport had 171,815 passengers. The traffic of around 150,000 passengers was expected in August, which is now in question given the situation and the global pandemic.
In order to attract tourists to Central Dalmatia, the Split-Dalmatia County Tourist Board has proposed to the Civil Protection Headquarters to open a point where only tourists will be tested for coronavirus so that those who are obliged to take the test can do so faster and cheaper.
"We would finance part of the costs as the Tourist Board, hoteliers also expressed the will that they would also give a discount to guests who are being tested, and part of the guests would have to pay," says Stella. "In this way, we would meet guests' needs from countries looking for testing for COVID-19 on their return from Croatia. I fully support everything that is determined and implemented by the Headquarters. I call on the inspections and all other authorities to do everything they can so that we can put ourselves in order and save September," says Stella.

August. 28, 2020 - On Thursday, August 27, 2020, with the opening of the exhibition "Jazz Greats in the Ethnographic Museum", the Split Open Jazz Fair 2020 began. It is a photographic exhibition of portraits of jazz musicians by Davor Hrvoj from Zagreb, the doyen of Croatian jazz journalism ("It's time for jazz").
Hrvoj started working in journalism in the 1980s and published his works in numerous Croatian newspapers, such as Jutarnji list, Vijenac, and Gloria. He was a member of the international jury for the European Jazz Prize and is currently a member of several cultural councils and a leader of jazz events in Croatia. Besides, he is a permanent member of the Croatian Journalists' Association as a freelance journalist and the Croatian Music Union, the Croatian Society of Composers, and the Croatian Association of Independent Artists.
"Why portraits? Because in this way, with the help of a telephoto lens, it's possible to get closer to the gestures of artists and the spirit of jazz music and what musicians feel and the way they think. Unlike most other photographers, I like to wait for the end of a concert, when artists are already losing control of their behavior and their gestures. Then I catch them in those moments when they are truly natural when they are truly what they are", the author explains.
After the opening, there will be two concert evenings at Đardin as part of the Urban Culture Review - EVO RUKE 7 with, as always, free admission. The exhibition is open to visitors until 18.09.
"Since jazz is my life, as is theirs, this is how I try to capture the essence of jazz", Hrvoj concludes.
The program for two evenings of the concert program can be found below.
On Friday, 28.08.2020. perform:
21:00 - Peter Smith & The Hosters, Split,

August 28, 2020 - The 35th European Water Polo Championships will take place in Split from August 27 to September 10, 2022, LEN announced today.
The Championships will be held at the 10,000-seater Spaladium Arena in Split, which was confirmed as the host city in October 2018.
Originally planned for the middle of summer, the European Championships will be held at the end of August since the World Championships have been moved from 2021 to May 13 – 29, 2022. LEN said they wanted to ensure the players had enough time to recover between competitions.
A statement from LEN on Friday:
“To have our top water polo event in July 2022 would mean unbearable load for our great water polo players who will need to enjoy a substantial recovery period after an unprecedentedly busy spring. Athletes’ welfare has always been in the core of LEN’s policies and we shall never move away from our principles. The Croatian Water Polo Federation and the local organisers were all very supportive to hold the championships at the end of the summer," LEN President Paolo Barelli said.
“Though the event is still two years away, Croatia, the city of Split and the local water polo community are all already excited to welcome back the European Water Polo Championships to our country. International water polo events always enjoy a fantastic atmosphere here in Croatia and we expect nothing less this time. On behalf of the organisers and the city, we can promise to deliver another outstanding championships in 2022," Croatian Water Polo Federation President Mladen Drnasin added.
The event returns to Croatia 12 years after the competition was successfully held in Zagreb 2010. Russia, France, and Malta competed against Croatia for a chance to host the championship in 2022, but Croatia, with the support of the Government, the City of Split, the County, the Croatian Chamber of Commerce, and SDUŠ, was convincingly chosen as the winner.

August 28, 2020 - After the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) expressed interest in bringing the Croatia national team back to Split, City of Split has agreed to discuss hosting the national team of Portugal on November 17 at Poljud.
Slobodna Dalmacija reports that following the example of last year's model and the sellout match between Croatia and Hungary, HNS is looking to bring the Croatia national team back to Split.
On Thursday, the mayor of Split, Andro Krstulovic Opara, responded to the urgency sent by the executive director Marijan Kustic on behalf of HNS, asking for an answer by noon on Thursday.
Kustic received an answer:
"The City of Split accepts your initiative to hold a meeting to discuss the possible organization of the Croatia - Portugal match on November 17, 2020, in Split at Poljud Stadium, in the presence of spectators," responded Opara.
Recall, UEFA announced its intention to return spectators to stadiums by September 24, although not at full capacity. Nevertheless, it would be a step towards normalization.
If all goes to plan, Cristiano Ronaldo's national team, which is still the current European champion, will come to Split in the last round of Group 3 as part of the A-League of this UEFA competition. Apart from Croatia and Portugal, Sweden and France are also in that group.
The famous Hajduk stadium would thus host the Croatia national team for the 14th time. However, just like last year, Hajduk should not participate in the organization of the match, as HNS has yet to meet the club's demands.
Croatia kicks off their Nations League campaign on September 5 in Porto against Portugal. Three days later, they will play in St. Denis against France. The first home game in this competition will be played on October 11 against Sweden, which should, for now, be played at Maksimir.
Three days later, France should play at the same stadium, and before the potential spectacle at Poljud, Dalic's team will visit Sweden. That match will be played on November 14, three days before Croatia meets Portugal.

August 27, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates for Split.
Croatian Aviation reports that this summer, Aer Lingus launched only one direct line to Croatia, while before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, four were announced.
The company introduced the Dublin - Split line only on July 20 this year, at the same time canceling the lines from Dublin to Pula and Dubrovnik, as well as the Cork - Dubrovnik line for this summer season.
Aer Lingus aircraft operated three times a week on a direct route to Split (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), but currently, the number of weekly flights has been reduced and flights on Wednesdays are excluded from the schedule. The company will continue to operate between Split and Dublin twice a week (Mondays and Fridays) until September 11, after which Aer Lingus will conclude this summer season and traffic to Croatia.
Direct flights of other airlines
Travelers still have several options for direct travel between Ireland and Croatia. The well-known low-cost airline, Ryanair, will operate throughout September on two routes from Dublin to Croatia:
Dublin - Split line continues to operate twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays,
Dublin - Dubrovnik line continues to operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays.
The Croatian national airline will also continue to operate on the route Zagreb - Dublin, three flights a week have been announced, every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, with an A319 aircraft with a capacity of 144 seats.
This news comes one day after popular low-cost airline easyJet announced it would not operate on 20 international routes to four Croatian airports in September. The company will thus suspend certain lines earlier than planned, solely due to weak demand.
