Animal Shelters and Associations in Croatia: Macke & Co in Split

June 16, 2020 - How are animals coping in Croatia in the corona era, and who is looking after them? A new TCN series meets the volunteers behind the animal shelters and associations around Croatia. Today, TCN meets Macke & Co from Split.

There are hundreds of incredible shelters and associations in Croatia working tirelessly, with little to no support, to ensure no animal is left behind. In a new TCN series, we meet the people behind the animals.

Today, TCN meets Donation Group Macke & Co from Split.

"Everyone who has ever walked through Split has surely noticed the large cat population. The warm climate suits them and instead of once a year, cats have more litters throughout the year. So many cats, of course, cannot survive without the help of humans. And the best way to help them is castration. In this way, their uncontrolled reproduction is prevented, and the number of sick and trampled on the streets is reduced. The goal of this group is to help them in just that way. Castrated cats have their ear marked, either by a V-shaped mark, or the very tip of the ear is removed. The V mark is common in Split. We invite you to join us by participating in auctions, sharing albums, and adding new members," begins the Facebook group description of Macke & Co, which is led by Olivera Bibic Biocic, Silvija Kelam, Natalija Randelovic, among others.

I was first introduced to Olivera after I feared one of the street cats hanging around my property would give birth to another litter of kittens. Of the last litter she had, I took in the one she abandoned, and the other two passed from an infection. I couldn't bear the thought of that happening again.

Based on the recommendation of a friend, I got in touch with Olivera to see if she could come over with a trap to catch the mother cat so she could be taken to the vet to be sterilized. Without hesitation, Olivera was there the next day - and each day after until the cats on my property were finally caught, taken to the vet, sterilized, recovered, and brought back to my property. I have admired Olivera and the team behind Macke & Co ever since.

Screenshot 2020-06-16 at 12.49.08.png

While Macke & Co is not technically an animal shelter, its leaders have taken in hundreds of sick cats who they've nursed back to health for life on the street, or ultimately found them homes in Croatia or abroad, mostly in Germany.

"Since the beginning of the year, we have sterilized over 100 cats, cured dozens and put them back on the street, and we are trying to get the others adopted," said Olivera.

But without nearly any support from the city or state, Macke & Co must find creative ways to stay afloat for the street cats of Split.

 Screenshot 2020-06-16 at 12.50.01.png

Thus, the group regularly hosts auctions on its Facebook page with items donated by its members. Thanks to those that bid, they're able to fund many sterilizations and operations, should cats require additional medical care.

 Screenshot 2020-06-16 at 12.50.10.png

Olivera and her core team each house dozens of cats, all of which are either ready for adoption or are recovering after time at the vet.

The group is currently working on one Split habitat with over 30 cats who were regularly fed by the tenants, though only one had been sterilized. With the help of volunteers from the Sapama od Srce Association from Makarska, and with the financial support of German Association Fellnasen Stuttgart e.V., Macke & Co has already caught 22 for sterilizations!

But this is just part of the Macke & Co story.

If you're interested in getting involved in the auctions, would like to help foster or adopt, or simply just want to support Macke & Co in all of its endeavors to rehabilitate and sterilize the street cats of Split, be sure to join their Facebook group.

And if you're in Split? A bake sale will be held on Sunday, June 21, at Trogirska 8, from 10 am to 6 pm, where all proceeds from the baked goods bought will go directly to helping Macke & Co finance sterilizations!

Flights to Croatia: Air Transat Cancels Zagreb Service, Air France Returns to Croatia

June 12, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates from Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik.

Croatian Aviation reports that Air France announced today on its official website that it is re-launching international routes to numerous destinations in Europe and the world, including three in Croatia.

Air France originally planned to introduce a second daily rotation between Zagreb and Paris (thus connecting the two cities as many as 14 times a week), but the plans have, of course, been disrupted by the pandemic and will not happen this year.

The company will gradually increase the number of weekly flights to destinations in Croatia. We bring you the planned flight schedule for July:

The Paris - Zagreb line is being reintroduced, from July 1, 3 times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays),

The Paris - Split line is reintroduced, from July 13, 4 times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays),

The Paris - Dubrovnik line is being reintroduced, from July 4, twice a week (Saturdays and Sundays). On the Paris-Dubrovnik route, another flight will be added per week, on Mondays, from July 13.

On the routes from Paris to Zagreb and Dubrovnik, Air France will operate aircraft A319, A320 and A321, which in the fleet of this airline have a capacity between 143 and 212 seats in the passenger cabin.

According to current announcements, HOP will operate on the line from Paris to Split! for Air France Embraer 190 aircraft, capacity 100 passengers.

Furthermore, Croatian Aviation announced that Canadian leisure airline canceled the seasonal Toronto - Zagreb - Toronto route, which it launched in 2016.

Air Transat was originally supposed to launch a direct line between Toronto and Zagreb in May this year, but due to the impact of the pandemic, the start of traffic was postponed to July.

The direct line from Toronto was on sale 3 times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) with the A330-200 wide-body aircraft, but it was withdrawn from sale and the company announced that it will not operate on this line this year, of course, the only reason is poor demand caused by COVID-19.

Last summer, Zagreb was connected directly with Toronto with as many as two airlines, Air Canada Rouge operated 4 times a week between the two cities, while Air Transat operated 3 times a week on the route, i.e., a total of 7 weekly direct flights.

Air Canada Rouge canceled the route to Zagreb in April (as well as many other seasonal ones in Europe), and now Air Transat has done the same.

With this, as things stand now (with the exception of Emirates, which still has a line to Zagreb on sale since September), Zagreb was left without wide-body aircraft this year, given that Emirates will most likely also cancel flights to Zagreb.

5,100 Meter Long Bicycle Path to Connect Split Center to Znjan

June 12, 2020 - Great news for Split cyclists was announced by the city administration, as a new bike path will soon run from Dr. Franjo Tuđman Square, or the end of the Riva, to the Znjan plateau.

Slobodna Dalmacija writes that the new bicycle paths will begin as soon as the circumstances allow, and after the public procurement for the works worth 139,582 kuna with tax, the company "Pismorad" from Zagreb was chosen as the contractor, with whom a contract will be signed soon.

The planned bicycle route will be 5,100 meters long, and from west to east it will extend in the following direction: Trg dr. Franje Tuđmana, Obala Hrvatskog narodnog preporoda, Obala Lazareta, Obala kneza Domagoja, Katalinićev prilaz, Preradovićevo šetalište, Put Firula, Spinčićeva ulica, Šetalište kalafata, Šetalište Pape Ivana Pavla II.

From east to west, due to one-way streets, the route from Preradovićevo šetalište extends to the following streets: Hatzeov perivoj, Ulica Matije Gupca, Trg M. Pavlinovića, Biankinijeva, Petrova ulica, Poljana kneza Trpimira. This is the most that could be achieved, given the infrastructure, confirms Denis Spadina, president of the Split-Dalmatia County Cycling Association and one of the people behind the conceptual design of the new bike path.

"This is the best that could be achieved, in fact, it is the only possible solution without demolishing half the city. It starts, therefore, from the bottom of the Riva, from the entrance to Diocletian's cellars, and there will be no traffic across the promenade," Spadina said, since this is the issue that worried the citizens the most. The number of cyclists, especially during the epidemic, has increased significantly in Split - three to four times!

"There are more and more cyclists and this is a great thing for our city, people have been taking out bicycles that are twenty years old from the basement in recent months, and it is a great trend. I am especially glad that it will now be possible to drive through Trstenik, as so far, traffic rules have been violated. The whole path will be properly marked, and we go step by step. This is only the first phase, if it weren't for the corona, it would have been over a long time ago, as we had everything ready in January. The next thing we are working on is the path from Znjan to Stobrec, we have several options, but we do not want to overlap, let this come to life first," says Spadina.

The City confirms that, given the spatial conditions and the previous spatial planning documentation, which did not provide for the construction of this type of communal infrastructure, they will arrange traffic signals in order to contribute to increasing safety.

The good news is that the people of Split break new records in the rental of public bicycles every month, which, thanks to the European project "REMEDIO" implemented by the City of Split in partnership with its company "Split Parking", are available at 12 locations since July last year.

This new path was also prepared thanks to the European project - "Development of the system of bicycle paths of the city of Split" and the activities of the Department for Smart City projects and digitalization and the Service for international and EU projects.

Split is currently implementing the "Interreg Italy-Croatia" project "TOMORROW", one of the main activities of which is the improvement of the existing system of public bicycles, so the purchase of equipment for four new terminals with classic and electric bicycles worth 743,761 kuna with VAT. Split Parking also announced the expansion of the public bicycle system, so soon, every district in the city will have its own station, and citizens will have access to electric and classic bicycles at each one.

Flights to Croatia: Wizz Air and KLM Announce Split Routes

Junee 12, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates from Zagreb and Split.

Croatian Aviation reports that from July 4, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will gradually resume flights to Zagreb and Split from Amsterdam, which has been suspended due to travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus.

The airline will restart 3 weeks of flights to Zagreb and daily flights to Split from the Dutch capital.

From July 4, the Amsterdam - Zagreb line will be introduced, three times a week, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Embraer 190 aircraft with a capacity of 98 passengers have been announced on the route.

From the same day, the Amsterdam - Split line will be introduced, though it will operate daily, and on Sundays even twice a day. Embraer 190 aircraft of the previously mentioned capacity have also been announced on this route.

With a gradual increase in its flight network in July, KLM will establish 78% of its originally planned number of destinations, with more than 3,000 flights departing from Amsterdam. This is 25 to 30% of the number of flights that KLM operates under normal circumstances.

KLM suggests that all passengers contact the appropriate national authorities before making any plans to check the conditions of entry and stay at the desired destination and in transit countries. In some destinations, a quarantine measure on arrival is still valid.

Furthermore, Croatian Aviation reports that Wizz Air, a low-cost airline based in Hungary, has announced the launch of three routes to Croatia, from Poland and the UK to Split.

Wizz Air currently operates only to Split in Croatia, but it is interesting that it is one of the few airlines that announced expansion at the time of the pandemic, and is opening three new bases in Europe. Unfortunately, there are no new lines to Croatia among these new announcements.

The company introduces the following lines:

London (Luton Airport) - Split, from June 15, 3 times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays),

Katowice - Split, from June 20, 2 times a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays),

Warsaw - Split, from June 20, 2 times a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays).

The company intends to increase the number of weekly flights from July (adding another weekly flight, on Thursdays, on the route from Katowice and Warsaw).

This low-budget carrier will use A320 aircraft with a capacity of 180 passengers on the routes to Split, and larger A321 aircraft with a capacity of as many as 230 passengers are also expected.

Split Tourist Board Direct Confirms 560 Tourists Currently Visiting

June 11, 2020 - On Wednesday, 560 guests were registered in Split. Alijana Vukšić, the director of the Split Tourist Board, confirmed the good news.

"These are individual arrivals, guests who are inclined to visit us. We expect a larger number next week when the opening of borders begins, i.e., air transport," said Vukšić for Dalmatinski Portal.

She stressed that private renters are the foundation of tourism, so they organized training for them to get first-hand information.

One of them was organized in cooperation with the Tourist Board of Split-Dalmatia County on the topic 'Useful information, instructions, recommendations and rules of conduct for private renters with tourists in the post-COVID-19 era'.

All renter questions were answered by Tonči Glavina, State Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism, Luka Brčić, Deputy Mayor and Head of the Civil Protection Staff, Srđan Kušćević, Head of the Split Regional Civil Protection Office, Slobodan Marendić, Head of the Border Sector of the Split-Dalmatia Police Administration and his colleagues Paško Ugrina, Head of the Department of Prevention, Dr. Diana Nonković, Head of the Department of Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases of the Institute of Public Health and prof. Ivo Ivić, head of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases of the Clinical Hospital Center in Split.

All exhibitors agree that hygiene, disinfection and a sense of security for guests is paramount.

Brčić pointed out that there is no panic, but there is responsibility.

"Life goes on, we want tourism to develop, but we must know how to behave in the post-corona period. That is why we organized this training so that the landlords know how to act in case of guest infection, who to contact and how to proceed," stated Brčić.

Stella announced that everything from the training, to all questions about the conditions, preparation and potential situations, will be recorded and put on their pages so that all renters can be made aware.

"All in order to be the safest," underlined Joško Stella, director of the Split-Dalmatia County Tourist Board.

As for the conditions and measures, they are clear, Glavina said.

One of the main questions is whether there should be a break between receiving guests.

"There is no need to take a break and we can do it within Croatia. We have shown that we know how to fight and control," said Glavina.

The border police are also ready for the tourist season.

"A dozen countries already have an almost liberal approach, almost like before the coronavirus, and we can respond to all challenges. The border police had already shown that they know at the beginning when the borders needed to be closed so that epidemiologists could work on preventing the spread of the virus. Now we will because we are well organized," Marendić concluded, calmy.
