June 5, 2021 - KK Zadar becomes Croatian basketball champions after defeating Split 84:57 in the final game of the series on Saturday at Višnjik.

Since Croatian independence, Zagreb teams Cedevita and Cibona have mostly dominated the Basketball Championships (25 of 28 seasons). Split was able to pull off one title in 2003, while Zadar was able to win two in 2005 and 2008. 

Tonight, the two Dalmatian teams had to battle to find out who would be forever remembered as the 2021 champions and who would only be known by experts remembering a series that was played to the last decisive game. Recall, Zadar won its two home games to take a lead and seemed like the sure champions before Split somehow managed to come back to win game 3 in overtime and continue with a clear victory in game 4 to tie the series 2:2.

A lot of rumors were going on regarding discussions between the Zadar club,  the National Basketball Association, and the epidemiologists in charge of deciding how many spectators would be allowed into the gym. After the two losses in Split, the hosts were hoping for some support after seeing how much noise 100 spectators could make in Split and how many 100 spectators could actually be. During the first two games, Zadar had basically played in front of empty seats. Not very surprisingly thousands of spectators could not be held back and found their way into the arena to give Zadar a true home atmosphere, and despite all epidemic concerns it surely got loud in the arena. 

Despite the noise and intimidation, Split had the better start with a 0:5 in the first 3 minutes. Zadar was able to counter with a 14:2 run until 8 minutes into the game. Zadar was able to control the boards once again and outrebounded the Yellows 26:15 in the first half.

The second quarter opened with a three-pointer by Jordano (20:9), followed by two more Jordano three-pointers for a 15-point Zadar advantage in the 16th minute (33:18). Mesiček responded with a three-pointer, but in the next minute and a half, the 8:0 Zadar series on the wings of Mavra and Onuaku followed, and in the 18th minute, Zadar was up by 20 (41:21). The second quarter ended with a three-pointer by Ukić and Onuaku dunk (49:29).

Zadar's Jordano was on fire tonight and scored his sixth three-pointer of the final for 55:31 in the third quarter. Thanks to Vuković and Junaković, Zadar was up by 30 (68:38) in the last minute of the third quarter. Vukovic scored for 71:40, and Ukić ended the quarter with a three-pointer for 71:43.

Zadar calmly brought the game to an end. In the last quarter, more attention was paid to the stands than to the floor. Zadar fans lit torches and celebrated their new title.

June 2, 2021 - 81:68 (44:37) KK Split victory sends the national finals into a decisive game 5 in Zadar on Friday.

Zadar had already celebrated with its fans from the balcony of Krešimir Ćosić Sports Center after the win on Friday to take a 2:0 lead in the series. Then at the game on Monday, the guests were already 16 points ahead in the second quarter and looked like the next champions. Now it looks like they celebrated too early. After tonight's defeat, Zadar will have a home-court advantage, but the Yellows now have the momentum on their side.

Split showed a remarkable reaction already during the last game. After a dunk from the Yellows' big man Luka Babić, Zadar had to take a timeout. On the way to the bench, Marko Luković from Split and Aleksandar Bursać from Zadar got into a verbal dispute that caused the teams to go head to head on the court and home coach Mile Karakaš had to wrestle Luković to the ground to save him from further disciplinary punishment. Both players were ejected and it became a turning point in the series. Zadar seemed to have lost all energy while Split started to dominate the game and managed to cut the lead by end of regular time and then easily won the game in overtime.

Both "fighters" were allowed to play again today and the game started with both teams playing on the same level. Changing leads with good outside scoring was the predominant situation in the first minutes before Zadar was able to pull away 14:21 after 9 minutes and close the quarter at 19:23.

The guests managed to lead until Split came back with a double punch. A three-pointer by Toni Perković marked the 25:27 in the 13th minute before another three-pointer by Perasović gave the Yellows a 28:27 lead.

KK Zadar fought back and both teams were exchanging leads before Perković marked the 33:31 and Split managed to have a run to reach its biggest lead of the first half at 44:36 just before half-time (44:37).

The second half started with both teams respecting one another and none wanting to lose ground. There was a long time without scoring before Marko Luković showed the positive side of his game by hitting 2 back-to-back three-pointers to give the hosts a 56:42 lead who managed to maintain the lead until 62:48 at the end of the third quarter.

Zadar could not come back and Split managed to use its homecourt advantage for the second time and now has a shot at the title again on Friday when the decisive game at Krešimir Ćosić Sports Center will produce the 2020/2021 Croatian National Basketball Champions.

The best players of the night were Toni Perković with 18 points (4/8 three-pointers) and Marko Luković 17 points (5/8 three-pointers). Mavra, Onuaku, and Carter were able to score double digits for the guests.

May 29, 2021 - There are 180 Polish tourism representatives in the Zadar area at the moment to promote the new LOT Warsaw-Zadar flight.

HRTurizam reports that to promote the Warsaw-Zadar flight, the Polish national airline LOT, in cooperation with the Croatian Tourist Board, i.e., the CNTB Representation in Poland, the Zadar County and Zadar Tourist Board, and Zadar Airport, organized the arrival of 180 guests and representatives of the Polish tourism sector in Croatia.

Among the passengers on the flight are representatives of 17 Polish airports, the most important Polish tour operators and agencies, and 22 journalists from the most important Polish media, who are in Zadar and Zadar County on May 28 and 29.

"The Polish market is among the top five of our most important markets, and the stay of influential Polish guests in the Zadar County will further strengthen the tourist connection between our two countries. LOT has announced eight airlines from Poland to five Croatian airports this season, so I believe that in the coming period we can expect excellent numbers from Poland, especially in Dalmatian counties that Poles traditionally prefer," pointed out the director of the Croatian Tourist Board Kristjan Staničić during the reception of the Polish tourist delegation.

The President of the LOT Management Board Rafał Milczarski, the Member of the LOT Management Board Michał Fijoł, and the President of the European Association of Travel Agencies and Tour Operators (ECTAA) and the Polish Chamber of Tourism Paweł Niewiadomski also arrived in Zadar County.

LOT CEO Milczarski stressed that their passengers fly safely within Poland, but also around the world. "Those of us that flew here to Zadar on this special flight want to show everyone that Croatia is open and that we believe that Croatia is a safe destination," said Milczarski, adding that he will personally spend this summer with his family in Croatia.

"According to the latest research, 79 percent of Poles want to travel to Croatia, which, you will agree, are great results. With more and more good airlines, a large number of charter flights, and standard car traffic, we can expect a huge number of Poles in Croatia this year," said ECTAA President Niewiadomski.

All participants will be divided into six groups that will individually visit Pag, Vrana Lake, and Pakostane, the island of Ugljan, Starigrad - Paklenica, Biograd, Nin, and Zadar. In addition to the natural beauties of the destination, participants will be introduced to the traditions of Pag lace and salt, eno-gastronomic offer, and numerous cultural and historical sights from Zadar County.

"I am delighted that Zadar County will be able to present all its beauties to the Polish tourism sector and journalists on this occasion. I sincerely hope that this visit will contribute to the development of tourism and good relations between the tourism industry of our countries," said the director of the CNTB Representation in Poland, Agnieszka Puszczewicz, thanking everyone who helped in the implementation of this project.

May 28, 2021 - KK Split fought but was missing the necessary edge and luck to make a difference at 73:58 (28:28).

In the first game of the Croatian National Basketball Championship Finals, Zadar convincingly celebrated a victory against Split (81:53). Zadar dominated the entire match and with their dedication, they took the first step towards lifting the trophy for the third time. The main reason for the Zadar celebration was their defense. Coach Veljko Mršić’s squad played with high intensity and aggression. Zadar had 10 rebounds more than the guests and forced Split to 17 turnovers.

During the first match, Antonio Jordano was extremely successful from the three-point range, hitting three of his 6 attempts.

"We played a really good game but we have to leave that behind because the series is long. I think that in the next game we have to play as aggressively and focused as possible because that is the only way we will be able to fulfill some of the goals we agreed on. We have to be at a high level in defense and attack, I think that is the key for tomorrow's game. We have shown that we play as a team, we play as a team, and that is the most important thing," said Antonio Jordano last night.

At the same press conference, Veljko Mršić said that one should be careful after the first game. "I expect a good Split, it is still a team that beat Cibona twice in the semifinals. We have no right to relax after yesterday's victory, regardless of the fact that we have beaten Split four times in a row. We have to continue like this, because this is only the first third of the road, we have two more steps to win the title, that is our wish. We are going step by step, tomorrow is a new game and we are just thinking about that," said Veljko Mršić.

The normally very relaxed guest coach Mile Karakaš became very emotional during the second half of the game and stayed in Zadar with his team to fully focus on finding a way to crack the Zadar defense. He was able to start with his full roster including Perković who had missed the last game. 

The game started with slight advantages for the home team. Towards the end of the first quarter, Split brought the game to Marin Marić who could not be stopped. However, Zadar was able to pull away again with the last two attacks of the first quarter including a buzzer-beater by Carter for an 18:13 lead.

The Yellows were able to shake off the first loss and the issues of the first quarter and continued to put pressure on Zadar's big men. Despite a low shooting percentage, Split stayed in the game and put up a good fight for the rebounds. With Marić scoring 11 points in the first half, the guests tied the game 28:28 at halftime.

Milan Karakaš had to watch his team's luck run out in the second half. His team kept fighting against the constantly delivering home team but neither free throws nor important outside shots found their way into the basket.

Zadar out-rebounded the guests in the second half by 21:8 while Split could not even score from the free-throw line. A mere 3 shots out of nine found their target.

Despite his team having the upper hand, Zadar's top scorer Chinanu Michael Onuaku (19 points) showed some unsportsmanlike conduct in several situations towards the end of the game leading to a verbal dispute with Luka Babić after the final whistle. Maybe he sparked the fire that Split will need to get back into this series.

The next two games will be played in Split on Monday and Wednesday. Zadar only needs one more win to finish the season with their third title.

May 26, 2021 - The latest flight news to Croatia as flights from Scandinavia to Croatia return this summer thanks to SAS, Norwegian, TUI, and Nova Airways. 

Croatian Aviation reports that SAS, Norwegian, TUI, and Nova Airways are announcing the start of operations on their seasonal routes from Scandinavia to Croatian airports.

After several months, Scandinavian airlines are resuming traffic on their seasonal international routes to Croatian airports. Pula, Split, and Dubrovnik will again have direct connections with several cities. A look at the flight schedule for June.

Lines to Split begin first

The first flights this season have been announced to Split Airport. From June 5, Norwegian will operate once a week on the Stockholm - Split - Stockholm route, and from the end of June, daily flights have been announced.

In addition to Stockholm, Norwegian plans to introduce the Copenhagen - Split - Copenhagen route (daily) from the end of June, and flights on the Oslo - Split - Oslo route have been announced from June 17, three times a week, every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

SAS Scandinavian Airlines will resume operations on the Stockholm - Split - Stockholm route from June 5, and as of June 16, two flights a week have been announced on this route, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

As of Wednesday, June 9, SAS introduces the Copenhagen - Split - Copenhagen line, which will operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. At the beginning of July, the company will introduce a regular line between Oslo and Split.

In addition to the two mentioned carriers, from Friday, June 4, TUI will operate once a week from Stockholm to Split. Nova Airways will also operate on the regular charter line Gothenburg - Split - Stockholm from the beginning of June.

At the end of June, the return of SAS to Pula

From the end of June, SAS Scandinavian Airlines routes to Pula Airport have also been announced. These are three international lines, from Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm.

The line from Copenhagen to Pula is announced twice a week, on Tuesdays and Sundays, the line from Oslo once a week, on Mondays, and the line from Stockholm twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The lines will be in operation from the last week of June, and an increase in the number of weekly operations is expected from July.

Norwegian is currently not selling tickets to Pula Airport for this summer season.

Lines to Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik has SAS and Norwegian flights in the announcement; both mentioned airlines should resume traffic to Dubrovnik in the last week of June.

SAS is currently planning two lines to Dubrovnik from Copenhagen and Stockholm. The line from Copenhagen is announced once a week from June 28, on Mondays, while the line from Stockholm is also announced once a week, on Sundays, from June 27. The carrier also plans to increase the number of operations towards Dubrovnik in early July. 

Norwegian currently offers only one line to Dubrovnik Airport. It is a line Stockholm - Dubrovnik - Stockholm, which should have its first flight this season on June 28. Three flights a week have been announced, on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, and from July on Saturdays.

Four lines from Zagreb

According to current announcements, Zagreb will have four direct lines to Scandinavia this summer.

At the beginning of June, Croatia Airlines will increase the number of operations on its regular route Zagreb - Copenhagen - Zagreb with a morning departure from Zagreb Airport, and in June, flights on this route will be available daily.

From July 23, Ryanair will introduce the Zagreb - Gothenburg - Zagreb route (three flights a week), while from September, regular flights from Zagreb to Oslo Torp and Malmo have been announced (both routes two flights a week).

In previous years, Norwegian operated on the line between Copenhagen and Zagreb, but this line is not on sale on the airline's official website this year either.

Flights from Zadar to Stockholm

Since the end of June, Zadar Airport has announced a regular direct Ryanair flight between Gothenburg and Zadar; two flights a week have been announced, on Tuesdays and Fridays, and in July, there will be as many as four flights a week on this route.

In addition to Gothenburg, Zadar will be connected to Stockholm and Aarhus in July.

Rijeka, Osijek, and Brac, the three remaining airports open to international traffic, currently have no scheduled flights from Scandinavia for this summer season.

May 26, 2021 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Russian S7 flights to Split and Zadar will operate from Moscow at the end of June! These will be the second and third routes to Croatia this year after Pula Airport. 

Croatian Aviation reports that the Russian airline, S7 Airlines, will introduce two more scheduled flights to Croatia in June. Namely, the Moscow-based airline will introduce two more scheduled flights to Croatia in the second half of June.

The airline traditionally operates on a regular seasonal line between Pula and Moscow, and this year, it will also operate to Zadar and Split!

Regular flights to Pula operate once a week, on Sundays, and the airline currently plans to maintain one rotation throughout the summer season.

The positive news is that S7 Airlines will introduce two more new routes to Croatia from the end of June.

The Moscow - Split - Moscow (Domodedovo Airport) line will be in operation from June 25, once a week, every Friday. Fifteen rotations with the B737-800 aircraft, with a capacity of 176 passengers, have been announced. The S7 will offer a total of 5,280 seats with one flight per week until the end of September (September 24, 2021) between Moscow and Split.

From June 26, S7 will operate on the Moscow - Zadar - Moscow line (also from Domodedovo Airport). This line was also announced once a week, on Saturdays, until September 25, so the same number of operations was announced as for Split.

On two new lines to Croatia, S7 will offer an additional 10,560 seats. This is the only announced line this season between Moscow and Zadar, while the Russian national airline - Aeroflot - will operate daily to Split. As it stands now, Aeroflot will fly to Split from June 1.

May 25, 2021 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Iberia flights to Split and Zagreb return next month, while the Dubrovnik line will increase to four flights a week! 

Croatian Aviation reports that Spanish national airline, Iberia, will resume traffic to two Croatian airports - Zagreb and Split - from the beginning of June.

Iberia is running again to Zagreb and Split from the beginning of June! Since March, the Spanish national airline has been operating on a regular route between Madrid and Dubrovnik and will reintroduce routes to Split and Zagreb next month. 

Return to Zagreb

These lines were not in operation in the summer of 2020, and the airline only had reduced traffic to Dubrovnik Airport. Still, in the summer of 2021, Iberia will operate to the Croatian capital, Split, and later to Zadar, which will restore traffic on all lines Iberia had in the summer season of 2019, before the pandemic.

The Madrid - Zagreb - Madrid line was announced on Friday, June 4. Initially, Iberia aircraft will operate on this route three times a week, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Three flights a week have been announced throughout June, and A320 aircraft will operate on the route.

Iberia will offer a total of 4,104 seats between Zagreb and Madrid in June.

Madrid - Split - Madrid from June 1

In addition to Zagreb, Iberia will return to Split Airport as of June 1. In the first half of the month, two flights a week are announced, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and from mid-June, flights on Saturdays and Sundays are added.

As early as the end of June, Iberia will operate between Madrid and Split five times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Currently, 16 rotations have been announced on this line in June, with 5,472 seats available for sale between the two mentioned cities.

More flights to Dubrovnik

As we mentioned earlier, Dubrovnik is the only Croatian airport to which Iberia operated in the summer of 2020 and is also the company's first destination in Croatia this summer season.

So far, two flights a week have been available on this route, and as many as four have been announced since the beginning of June (from Friday to Monday).

From Friday, June 18, Iberia plans to operate daily between Dubrovnik and Madrid, with A320 aircraft, so that the Spanish company will offer the largest number of seats to Dubrovnik. There are currently as many as 7,182 seats on sale.

Zadar from July!

Regular flights on the route between Madrid and Zadar are currently postponed to the beginning of July (from July 3). Two flights a week have been announced on this route, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, but given that the start date of operations is still quite far, there is no need to hurry with booking because the airline could continue to cancel flights on this route.

In June, Iberia will have three lines to Croatia with a total of 15 weekly operations. Between Madrid, Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik, there are as many as 16,755 seats on offer.

May 24, 2021 - The latest flight news to Croatia as 16 Eurowings flights to Croatia have been announced from next month! 

Croatian Aviation reports that the German low-cost airline, Eurowings, is planning 16 international flights to six Croatian airports in June.

In May, Eurowings renewed traffic on several routes to Split Airport. In the last week of May, the company will also operate to Rijeka, Zagreb, and Zadar, and in June, it will significantly increase its presence at Croatian airports.

Three Eurowings lines from Berlin

Eurowings will operate for the first time from the new Berlin Airport (Brandenburg) to Croatian airports. Three lines from Berlin are introduced in June; to Dubrovnik, Rijeka, and Split.

The Berlin - Dubrovnik - Berlin line will operate from June 27, once a week, on Sundays. The second weekly flight has been announced since early July, on Tuesday.

The Berlin - Rijeka - Berlin line will be in traffic from June 26, once a week, on Saturdays. The introduction of the second weekly flight (Thursday) from the beginning of July is also expected on this line.

The Berlin - Split - Berlin line starts in mid-June. The first flight has been announced for Saturday, June 19th.

Four lines from Hamburg

From June, three more Croatian airports will have a direct Eurowings route to Hamburg. The following lines have been announced:

Hamburg - Dubrovnik - Hamburg, from June 27, Sunday,

Hamburg - Rijeka - Hamburg, from June 26, Saturday,

Hamburg - Zadar - Hamburg, from June 26, Saturday,

The Hamburg - Split - Hamburg line is already in operation, but from June 28, Eurowings will increase the number of operations to two weeks of flight, on Mondays and Saturdays.

Three lines from Dusseldorf

Eurowings will resume traffic on the line between Dusseldorf and Rijeka later this month. That line will also have one weekly flight in June, every Saturday. An increase in weekly operations is not expected until July.

The company will resume traffic to Pula from June 26. The line between Dusseldorf and Pula will run once a week, on Saturdays.

The Dusseldorf - Split - Dusseldorf line will continue to operate twice a week in June, on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Two lines from Cologne

The line between Cologne and Zagreb is open three times a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The same number of operations was announced for June. The line between Cologne and Split starts with regular operations from May 29, once a week, on Saturdays. One flight a week is also announced through June.

Lines from Stuttgart to Zagreb, Zadar, and Split

From May 27, Eurowings will run again between Stuttgart and Zagreb, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. Flights have also been confirmed for June.

The Stuttgart - Split - Stuttgart line is in traffic from June 9. Eurowings will introduce the second weekly flight on Wednesday.

The Stuttgart - Zadar - Stuttgart line will operate again from June 13. One flight per week is announced on Sundays.

Eurowings will also have one line from Dortmund to Croatia. From May 29, the Dortmund - Split - Dortmund line will be introduced on Saturdays, which will get its second weekly flight on June 8, on Tuesdays.

The German low-cost airline will have 16 routes (23 flights a week) to 6 Croatian airports in June; Zagreb, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, Pula, and Rijeka.

May 23, 2021 - KK Zadar and Gorica fought in the HT Premijer Liga semifinal. KK Zadar defeated Gorica 85:68 (42:30).

Zadar entered the game as the favored team finishing the league at the pole position and swept Šibenik in the quarter-finals. Gorica came in 4th position at the end of the regular season and managed to pull off two tight wins against KK Sonik Puntamika.

After winning the first game at home 89:73, Zadar showed weakness on Thursday and surprisingly lost at Gorica with 76:79. Today's game at Krešimir Ćosić Sports Center had to bring the decision on who would face KK Split in the championship finals. Split won in two straight games against Cibona Zagreb.

Gorica was still weakened and coach Josip Sesar arrived with only 10 players despite the return of Bakur, their inside players were mostly missing due to the continued absences of Ljubičić and Batur. Their main target before the game was to keep Zadar's big man Onuaku out of the game and to see if Karlo Uljarević could repeat his 22 point game from Thursday in which he scored 3 successful three-point shots.

The Dalmatians started well into the game and decided the first quarter 18:14. The second quarter turned out to be quite ugly with plenty of fouls and few baskets out of set play situation. A buzzer-beater from Vuković sealed the hosts 42:30 halftime score.

Plenty of fouls seemed to be the only hope for the underdogs from Gorica and the game continued how the first half had ended. Zadar was able to pull away to its largest lead of 64:39 but the guests did no give up. The men of coach Veljko Mršić managed to start the final quarter with a 10:0 run to achieve a 72:60 but could keep up the intensity until the end. Zadar managed the lead and sealed the 17 point victory to qualify for the finals in which they will have a home-court advantage against KK Split who make their first finals appearance after 13 years.

The top scorer of the night was Zadar's captain Dominik Mavra with 19 points, Karlo Uljarević scored 14 for the guests. 

The finals will be played in a 2-2-1 mode with the first two games in Zadar on Wednesday and Friday. The first team to win 3 games will win the title.

ZAGREB, 23 May, 2021 - The state secretary at the Health Ministry, Silvio Bašić, said in Zadar on Sunday the Zadar archipelago would soon get three emergency medical service vessels.

"Besides the three vessels, Zadar County will also get one vehicle, a mobile surgery and pharmacy for the inhabitants of the remotest parts of the hinterland," Bašić said.

The county's public health institute will also receive a HRK 2.5 million molecular diagnostics device, a Viper LT, whereby the institute will become a reference centre for 12 Southeast European countries.

County prefect Božidar Longin said the first 12-metre-long water ambulance would arrive in a month and that the second vessel would be a pharmacy delivering medicines to remote islands.

The third vessel will be able to sail in all weather conditions and is intended for the remotest islands in the county, he added.
