Zagreb Digital Nomad Ambassador Rudi Witkowsky on Life in the Croatian Capital

August 24, 2021 - The story is starting to spread. Zagreb as a fantastic remote work destination. Some thoughts from the second Zagreb Digital Nomad Ambassador, Rudi Witkowsky.

Word of mouth tourism promotion is arguably the most precious of all. Zero cost, full of passion, and endorsements from friends and family - no fake reviews here.

It is just over two years since TCN started writing about the potential of Croatia as a digital nomad destination. The story has been growing steadily, and all the global coverage surrounding the introduction of the digital nomad permit helped to make it a global story. Suddenly, digital nomads were looking at Croatia as their next remote work destination. Maybe not for the 12-month permit, but for a month, two, three - nomads are by definition nomadic.

And the general feedback  that I have observed is that these new arrivals very much like what they see. Excellent English and Internet, stunning nature and a beautiful coast, great food and wine, culture, history, affordability, accessibility, friendly locals, safety, and lifestyle - the list goes on. Zagreb Digital Nomad Week speaker Dean Kuchel of Digital Nomad World summed it up very nicely when he was asked what Zagreb was missing regarding its digital nomad offer:

"The only thing Zagreb is missing is more digital nomads."

A number of nomads have been very pleasantly surprised at what they have found in Croatia, and particularly Zagreb, and they have been busy relaying their experiences and enthusiasm to their friends and nomad communities. The buzz about Croatia, with its great lifestyle, is getting louder. Only this week, TCN contributor Steve Tsentserensky's explanation of his life in Croatia on $47 a day went viral as the top trending story on CNBC News - the video above has had almost 100,000 views at time of writing. The latest example of free global promotion of Croatia's digital nomad opportunity. It is a story which is being dripfed organically, and the message is starting to resonate.

After the success of Zagreb Digital Nomad Week, a collaboration between Saltwater Nomads, Zagreb Tourist Board and TCN,  the second component of the project, Zagreb Digital Nomad Ambassador Project, in partnership with Doma Zagreb Aparthotel, began on July 1 and runs until December 31.

This month's ambassador is Rudi Witkowsky from South Africa, who swapped a couple of months remote working on the Adriatic coast to take up residence at Doma Zagreb Aparthotel with his partner Victoria. Rudi has been enjoying the Croatian capital and indulging in his fitness passion in the city's gyms and parks, while working his financial day job from the coworking spaces around town.

A first-time visitor to the city, certain themes in the impressions of Rudi so far seem to be consistent with many other nomads I have spoken to about the Zagreb experience. The level of English is outstanding, the Internet is excellent, the choice of coworking spaces superb. And the food... You can listen to Rudi's full interview in the video below. All messages that need to be amplified moree loudly, but which are already being shared among friends, family and communities.

And that word of mouth recommendation seems to be working. Rudi explains that he has had a phenomenal response from back home to all his social media posts about his remote life in Croatia, a life he plans to continue if his application for the digital nomad permit is successful. But he is also working on another project with partners, which could also see some nice benefits for Croatia - to bring groups of up to 50 financial consultants to remote work in Croatia for 4 months a year, as they are actively looking for a European base.

Tell the story and they will come. And the more stories which are being told, the more they are coming.

Zagreb Deputy Mayor Danijela Dolenec: Applications For Stay-at-Home Parent Grants to be Suspended in September

ZAGREB, 17 Aug, 2021 - Zagreb Deputy Mayor Danijela Dolenec said on Tuesday that after a public consultation, the city would not change the proposed decision to suspend applications for grants for stay-at-home parents from 6 September until an evaluation of the scheme.

"We are aware that it is difficult to set a deadline, there isn't necessarily a happy solution. It's important to stop applications from new beneficiaries until the scheme undergoes a comprehensive evaluation," Dolenec told a press conference.

She said that 48 proposals had been submitted in the public consultation and some of them propose that the deadline be extended.

"An extension of up to a year, until 2024, has even been requested," said Dolenec, adding that the City of Zagreb would propose to the Assembly that a temporary moratorium be introduced as of 6 September.

The association 3Plus Families, which brings together families with three or more children recently called for extending the deadline for applying for monthly grants for stay-at-home parents until 31 May 2022, urging the City of Zagreb not to give up on that demographic measure until it is introduced nationwide.

Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević Says Bulky Waste Being Removed From Zagreb Streets as of Today

ZAGREB, 17 Aug, 2021 - Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said on Tuesday the Zagreb Holding multi-utility conglomerate's Waste Management branch was removing bulky waste from city streets as of today and that Holding signed a contract for the temporary storage of that waste in the eastern suburb of Sesvetski Kraljevac.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, Tomašević said bulky waste would be stored there for the next 75 days which, he added, should be enough time to first lease and then buy a shredder and meet the other technical requirements so that in future Waste Management ("Čistoća" in Croatian) would recover bulky waste instead of private companies.

Asked if he could vouch that bulky waste removal would no longer be suspended, the mayor said he hoped this was the last time it happened.

Tomašević said a complaint was lodged yesterday against a new public procurement procedure for bio-waste disposal and that "it's definitely slowing down the process."

He said five offers had been made for the purchase of two shredders, while the procedure for leasing them, estimated at HRK 200,000, is still under way.

Tomašević declined to comment on an ironic statement issued last week by the private C.I.O.S. Group, specialised in waste management, after he announced the cancellation of a tender for the removal of bulky waste in Zagreb after two valid bids had been submitted, one by Reoma Group and the other by the Ce-Za-r company, a member from the C.I.O.S. group.

The mayor annulled the tender which had been advertised by the previous city administration.

First Croatian Airport: CO2 Reduction at Zagreb Airport Recognized with ACI Level 3 Certificate

August 17, 2021 - CO2 reduction at Zagreb Airport has been recognized with an Airport Council International level 3 certificate, confirming the management and reduction of CO2 emissions in everyday airport activities

Zagreb International Airport has received a certificate from ACI (Airport Council International) confirming level 3 of management and reduction of CO2 emissions in everyday airport activities, reports HRTurizam.

According to the classification of the global ACI ACA program (Airport Carbon Accreditation), this level is called "Optimization." Therefore, it represents a significant step towards fulfilling the commitment of Zagreb Airport to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

235266452_4545886935473490_7448323759561213120_n.png

Based on the submitted data, the program independently assesses and recognizes the efforts of airports in managing and reducing carbon emissions. The program for measuring this level of certification also includes all stakeholders and business partners of the airport (airlines, various tenants, catering, shops, etc.), whose activities within the airport affect CO2 emissions.

Franjo Tuđman Airport is the first airport in the Republic of Croatia to reach ACI-ACA level 3, resulting from an extensive program of various activities in recent years aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

“Zagreb International Airport is committed to implementing business solutions that aim to reduce negative environmental impacts. Achieving level 3 according to the ACI-ACA classification is a significant step in these efforts. Our goal and commitment in the airport's business activities is to reach zero CO2 emissions by 2050, and we will be persistent on that path, ” said Huseyin Bahadir Bedir, President of the Management Board of MZLZ d.d.

In recent years, the airport has introduced a wide range of energy management measures that have enabled it to monitor and reduce total energy consumption, such as the installation of efficient LED lighting, reconstruction of low voltage in substation 2, boiler room reconstruction, reconstruction and modernization of heating/cooling substation in the administration building, and the production of hot water using solar collectors. Thanks to all these activities, carbon emissions at the airport were reduced by 4% between 2017 and 2019, despite a significant increase in passengers in that period.

The plan is to build a photovoltaic power plant that will directly convert solar energy into electricity and replace existing vehicles and equipment in an environmentally friendly way.

Bots&Pots: First Restaurant with Food Prepared by Robotic Chefs to Open in Zagreb

August 14, 2021 - Meet Bots&Pots - the first restaurant in which the food will be prepared by robotic chefs is set to open in Zagreb soon.

At a yet undisclosed location in Zagreb, GammaChef, a robotic chef capable of preparing one-pot meals such as Dalmatian gregada, stews, risottos, or seafood pasta.

The bot is continually learning new recipes with the help of a (human) professional chef. As Netokracija writes, every time a chef prepares a new dish for the first time using GammaChef, the robot creates a digital recipe with all the necessary data. The automated and patented process in the software then, using sensors, reproduces all the steps of the recipe, following the instructions of a professional chef. There will be five robots in the Bots&Pots restaurant, which means they will be able to serve up to 60 servings per hour.

The operation of the restaurant will be fully digitized and monitored via a mobile application, and will rely heavily on just-in-time procurement thanks to close monitoring of inventory. Guests will be able to choose food via a screen and be able to watch the robot prepare food. Bots&Pots restaurant is a result of the collaboration between GammaChef's Dražen Drnas, entrepreneur Hrvoje Bujas, and Giuliano Nolo.

As Netokracija quoted Drnas: ''We have designed a restaurant that will best suit the younger population and that makes the most of the possibilities and qualities of robots. The goal is for guests to come first for the robot and the second and every next time for food.''

The restaurant has already attracted much attention. Most recently, Bots&Pots shared on their Facebook page that they received a visit from the new British ambassador to Croatia, Simon Thomas, in their showroom, where GammaChef is diligently learning to prepare new dishes.

As the authors of the project GammaChef wrote on their website: ''We don’t believe in 3D printing of food and we don’t believe in magic pills that will replace eating. Yes, we believe in digital recipes but in digital recipes of our grandmas, your friends, or the best chefs that put their love, passion, and knowledge to prepare tasty meals. We believe there are no shortcuts in cooking, therefore, GammaChef prepares food just like real people do.''

Zagreb Mayor Cancels Tender for Bulky Waste Removal, Čistoća to Do the Job

ZAGREB, 13 Aug 2021 - Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said on Friday that he had decided to cancel a tender for the removal of bulky waste in Zagreb, with two valid bids having been submitted, one by Reoma Group and the other by the Ce-Za-r company, noting that the city-owned sanitation company Čistoća would be doing the job.

Čistoća will be in charge of removing the city's bulky waste once it procures a crusher.

A procedure for the procurement of two crushers with the help of EU funds is currently underway, and until it is completed, the city will hire a crusher, Tomašević told reporters.

The mayor presented the temporary solution to the problem of bulky waste removal after the removal of some types of bulky waste - padded furniture and mattresses - was stopped in Zagreb.

The mayor said Čistoća estimated its model of bulky waste removal would help save HRK 33 million a year.

Asked when the removal of waste in Zagreb would be normalised, Tomašević asked citizens for patience, noting that the procedure to hire the crusher should be completed by the end of next week, as a temporary solution until Čistoća procures crushers.

Waste removal discontinued as quantity agreed under current contract reached

The removal of bulky waste in Zagreb is currently suspended because the quantity of waste whose removal was agreed under a contract with the companies Ce-za-r and Reoma Group has been reached.

"Even though the contract is valid until January 2022, the amount of waste agreed under it has been reached and that happened sooner than planned due to a large amount of bulky waste, which is primarily due to reconstruction after the earthquake," Tomašević explained.

Čistoća sought procurement of crusher for years

Tomašević also warned that the price of bulky waste removal of HRK 1,800 per tonne, currently paid by Zagreb, was the highest in the country, adding that the nearby town of Samobor, whose bulky waste was also removed by a private company, paid around HRK 700 per tonne and the northern Adriatic city of Rijeka HRK 1,100 per tonne.

He also said that Čistoća had been asking for years to buy a crusher.

"I really don't know why no one had thought of buying a crusher. I mean, obviously someone had, because there are documents showing that Čistoća asked for it but its requests were left out of public procurement plans for years," he said.

Asked if the city would now accept the offer by Ce-ZA-r which on Thursday offered to remove bulky waste free of charge until the completion of the tender, Tomašević said he did not receive any formal offer to that effect but learned of it from the media.

He also said that free waste removal was offered in a situation when the tender was still valid.

Zagreb Pride Reports Homophobic Incidents on Korčula Island

ZAGREB, 13 Aug 2021 - A group of queer friends from several countries were thrown out of the Lost in the Renaissance festival on the southern Adriatic island of Korčula last weekend in an incident motivated by homophobia, Zagreb Pride reported on Friday.

According to Zageb Pride, at the end of the first day of the festival, held in The Jungle Club, outside Korčula town, one of the bouncers separated by force two young men who were dancing holding each other. The bouncer ordered: "No kissing, just dancing!"

Shortly after that, another bouncer poured a bottle of water onto another two young men who were napping on a bench in each other's arms. In the end, the bouncers kicked the young men out, Zagreb Pride said.

The homophobic incidents were reported to Zagreb Pride, the organisers of the Lost in the Renaissance festival, the Aminess Hotel management and the Korčula town authorities.

Zagreb Pride said nobody reacted to the reported incidents.

Zagreb Pride also recalled another incident that took place in June in Zagreb where two Spanish women, during their business stay in Croatia's capital, suffered lesbophobic insults from Zagreb residents.

A 4-star hotel might not be the most obvious place for a coworking space, but several digital nomads have commented on the excellent service and facilities available at Canopy by Hilton. Located in Branimir Centre close to the bus and train station, Canopy has a few good spaces for remote workers, and the combination of the gym, local restaurants and excellent service are making it a remote working hit.
