Split Shipyard Constructs Largest Sailing Ship in the World

Could a Croatian sailing ship make it into the Guinness Book of World Records?

The famous Split shipyard Brodosplit is currently constructing the largest sailing ship in the world - a modernized replica of the distinguished French sailing ship "France II" that was built in 1911 and was left stranded in 1922, reports 24 Sata on May 23, 2017.

This luxury passenger ship, which has been in construction at Brodosplit since September 2015, will be the fourth in the fleet by company Star Clippers Ltd. from Monaco who otherwise builds traditional sailboats.

“This will be the largest sailing ship in the world with a length of 162.2 meters. With its five masts, the core area will measure 6400 m2. The ship will have five decks, and it will be able to accommodate 450 persons of which 300 passengers will be in luxury cabins and 150 crew members in their intended 74 cabins,” said Josip Jurišić from Brodosplit.

The ship will be luxuriously furnished, with a flair and atmosphere reminiscent of old sailing ships. It will also have a library and large salon which will be spread across three decks with railings and a piano.

“The sailing ship will have the most modern navigation and communication equipment, and each cabin will have internet, telephones, televisions, music and other means of entertainment. On the open decks, there will be three bars, and a kitchen will spread across three floors. Air conditioning on the ship will be carried out according to the highest requirements to meet the comfort of the passengers in all weather conditions,” added Jurišić.

The ship is designed exclusively for sailing, although it will have two completely independent electric propulsion motors. The deck will be completely covered with expensive teak, and there will be three swimming pools with fresh or salt water and underwater lights, heating, and bubbles. In one of the pools, the passengers will even be able to dive.

Currently, the world record holder for the largest sailing ship is the "Royal Clipper" from the same Monaco company - boasting a length of 132 meters. This Croatian sailing ship, which will be called the "Flying Clipper", should enter the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest sailing ship in the world after its construction.

If all goes to plan, the ship will be delivered early next year.
