Island of Krk to Introduce New Project for Electro-Mobility

By 12 February 2017

The island of Krk is seriously considering the implementaion of a large number of electric bicycles. The idea has long been in development by association “My Island Krk” (Moj otok Krk), and the project has the support of the entire community.

The use of electric bicycles has been the focal point for several new projects on the island, with the goal being not only ecology, but to also create an additional tourist offer, reports HRTurizam on February 12, 2017.

"Primarily, we are leading the theme for e-mobility, and are in fact being environmental so as to avoid pollutants that disturb the peace and quiet on the beach. The electric bicycle allows people to take more ambitious trips, and it is good for the population of a certain age that can no longer do much pedaling,” says Nenad Maljkovic, President of My Island Krk.

The utility water supply, waste management, and recycling company Ponikve also supports the project for electro-mobility. With help from the fund for energy efficiency, 11 electric-mobiles were procured for the needs of the company and the island towns and municipalities. Eleven charging stations for the electric vehicles are also being built for tourist purposes.

As Krk realizes a third of the tourist traffic in the Kvarner region, the use of electro-mobility reduces the huge problem of pollution from transport.

"I can say that this is something that has to get into our basic strategy and also in our operational plans. Electro-Mobility is good firstly for the local population, but also for branding in tourism," said Vjeran Piršić, president of the Eko Kvarner association.

The e-mobility project has the support of the whole community which is not surprising considering the island already recognizes ecological waste management, making it one of the most successful in Croatia.
