No, we are not kidding, you can add this activity to your summer travel itinerary.
First of all, let me ask you, have you ever heard of Đurđevački Pijesci (or Đurđevački Peski)? Neither have I, and upon hearing on April 20, 206 that the mayor of Đurđevac is buying three Arabian (dromedary) camels in order to offer tourists and locals a unique opportunity to ride them through an area called "Croatian Sahara", I turned to Google and let my the walking to find out what this is all about.
Mayor of Đurđevac, Željko Lacković is really buying three camels and already has big plans for his municipality: " We have an ideal tourist destination, Đurđevačke pijeske, and yet we don't have a product that will attract tourists. Camel riding will certainly be a tourist attraction and we have to take advantage of our vast tourist potential" Lacković said.
Camels were ordered from a Danish breeder, they are between 3 a 5 years old, two of them are female and one male. The price of each camel is around 3 000 euros and when we add 3 000 euros for transport, the city will pay around 12 000 euros for this adventure.
This operation has been carefully planned and thought through from special freight companies experiencing in transporting these artiodactyls to the engagement of the Veterinary Directorate and Nature Protection Directorate in animal care.
Even though Arabian camels are very unusual for this part of the world, they can survive in this climate. They are expected to arrive in Đurđevac in a month after the city acquires a few more permits so this desert adventure will start just in time for summer holidays.
