Events for Sudamja - Feast Of Sveti Duje, Patron Of Split City

Split Tourist Board, Split City Council and many associations, libraries, museums, theatres, and sport clubs have prepared a number of events for this year’s celebrations of City of Split’s Day - Sveti Duje.

The verses of the old poem written by Tonči Petrasov Marović, carved in the stone on Split City pedestal say “There is no need for leaving, no need for looking around - what is, it is here”, and Split is the place to be in the next few days. From May 3. 2016, here are just some events one can enjoy during the celebrations of Split’s patron, Sveti Duje (Saint Domnius).

The biggest sporting event was staged this weekend, and we brought you the story yesterday, with a wonderful rowing event bringing international crews of students from all around Europe to compete and enjoy Split’s hospitality. Split Tourist Board has prepared daily concerts and music events throughout the city, including choirs from Split, famous Croatian pop and rock bands, and even some international music.

There is a traditional flower festival in the cellars of Diocletian Palace, children workshops and book presentations in the libraries, many exhibitions in the museums, and the Croatian National Theater has prepared a couple of plays of “Spli’ski Akvarel”, the most popular operetta in the City’s history. The Theater will also be the venue for the formal session of the City Council, with many guests from friendly cities and Croatian government.

Regarding sport events, during the celebrations, you can enjoy a parachuting show at Riva, the Croatian free climbing open championship, the veterans basketball tournament including some of the big stars of Croatian basketball from the past, and much more. A free climber will also be raising the Croatian flag on the bell tower of St. Domnius Cathedral on tomorrow, noon sharp. Be there, and prepare your cameras.

If you want to experience old Split, today there is a feast in Veli Varoš, one of the oldest Split neighbourhoods called Fešta Sv. Križa (Saint Cross Feast) which was canceled yesterday due to the bad weather, but will surely resume tonight. It includes traditional food, music and if you are nostalgic about the old days, it is an event to visit. If not, you can simply enjoy fresh fish and domestic wine, as there is a lot of that.

On the very day of the patron, it will all start with the procession and the Mass at Riva in the morning, and in the evening, there is a traditional “tombola”, probably the bingo play with the most participants around. If you are there, don’t forget to buy some wooden product, as it is a tradition of the people from Split on this day. The fun continues with the big concert by at Riva and an evening of tango dancing at Peristil, and it all ends, of course, with fireworks.

The Day of Sveti Duje is celebrated May 7, but the feast goes on all the way to May 15 and is concluded with Day of Marjan Hill, so we will bring you the daily overview of the events in Destination Split section of TCN.
