Split Is Celebrating Its Patron's Day

It is St. Domnius Day, a day of festivities and celebration in Split, here is the list of all the events of the day.

It is different, beautiful, somewhat controversial and hardly meeting its potential, but it will never leave you feeling indifferent, so it is safe to say that Split is a very special Croatian city. On 7 May, it is celebrating its Day, and the Day of its Patron, St. Domnius or Sv. Duje.

And when in Split, do it the Split way, buy something made out of wood, as it is the tradition to do so on this very day. There is an Open Fair on Riva where it is possible to buy many homemade traditional souvenirs and products. As well as the traditional Chinese ones too, of course, since there's no feast without them.

In the morning, people of Split get serious, dress up, and attend the procession of Sv. Duje, followed by a mass on Riva, and dignitaries join them every year, as it is a long time tradition. The procession starts from the St. Domnius Cathedral at 10 am.

There is no time to rest today, as there is an “Eats and drinks feast” at the fish market starting 12.30 pm, and five thousand dishes will be served. This year’s menu contains veal with barley, a traditional Dalmatian dish, prepared by local chefs.

Arts Gallery Split has prepared two new exhibitions, one by Petar Jakelić, opening at noon sharp, and the other one, showing the collection selected by Renata Poljak, which will include a lecture by the author at 6 pm. Puppet Theater Split has prepared staging of the “History of Split – part 3” for 5 pm, and two hours later, one can attend the showing of “Heidi” at the Split Youth Theater.

“Zlatna Vrata” Cinematheque has prepared the evening of Matko Petrić, including projections of short documentaries, music videos, and the showing of his feature documentary “Earl Jones was right”, with a theme of Split’s blues scene.

If you are more interested in sport, in the Multimedia Culture Center there is the Croatian Open Free Climbing Championship today and tomorrow. If you are more of a traditional sport fan, Split Basketball Club has opened its gates for this evening’s League match against Šibenik, to treat its fans on the day or the City’s patron.

Party at Riva is starting 6 pm, with entertainment by “Filip Dević” klapa, and followed by Tombola draw, the bingo including thousands of people. Not to undermine it, as the main prize is 20 thousand HRK. It is always fun to see the same individuals who have dressed up for the morning procession in the more relaxed mood in the evening. To ensure they are suitably entertained, there will be the concert including Split’s own “Marijan Ban and Diktatori” and “Magazin” so there is music for a variety of tastes.

As if this was not enough, one has a chance to tango into the night at the Peristil Square, starting 9 pm, as there will be the Evening of Tango. If you are in the vicinity of Split, do not miss the chance to enjoy one special feast in the unique city.
