Tourism in Rijeka: 28% Increase in Overnight Stays

By 10 August 2017

It's an outstanding season for Croatian tourism on all fronts, the most popular destinations in Istria and Dalmatia breaking records in visitor numbers with each passing month.

Another win comes from Rijeka: in the first seven months of this year, more than 70.000 arrivals have been recorded in the biggest city on Kvarner, making for an 18% increase compared with the same period in 2016. Foreign tourists generated a total of 56.642 arrivals, while domestic tourists make up the remaining 13.833 arrivals.

A total of 173.045 overnight stays has been recorded in the time period in question; it's an exceptional 28% increase compared with last year. Rijeka saw 145.123 overnight stays by foreign tourists and 27.922 stays by domestic tourists.

Tourists from Italy generated most overnight stays, followed by citizens of Germany, the US, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Spain and France.

It's also worth noting the majority of tourists who spend at least one night in Rijeka are young travellers aged from 19 to 30. Foreign tourists spend an average of two and a half days in Rijeka, while domestic tourism generates average stays of two days, proving Rijeka still remains a transit city when it comes to tourism.

Private accommodation saw the most overnight stays, followed by hotels, hostels and other objects of non-commercial accommodation.
