So many people asked me, why in the world would you take a sailboat all the way to Europe, to Yugoslavia? Well, it's the will to go where and when I please. It's a will that has existed in sailors ever since they crossed the smallest body of water. There's hardly a place where water flows that sailors cannot and will not sail. And only a fool would believe it was easy.
Back in an age when sharing impressions from your travels used to take a bit more effort than just pointing your phone in any given direction and sharing the result on Instagram, an group of friends from the US sailed all over the Adriatic in their boat named Full Swing. Their tremendous efforts to capture everything they've seen on camera resulted in a delightful documentary, one that could be used as a promotional video for the Croatian coast even today – if it weren't for the fact it's more than an hour long.
The video kicks off with a spicy start along a nudist beach in Istria, and follows the creators as they sail their way south to Dubrovnik... then further to Budva in Montenegro. The people behind the camera made sure to feature the most stunning shots of the coast, but also to present some historical facts and useful information about everyday life in cities and villages on the Adriatic.
It's an all-around captivating video, made even better by the most charming character – Charlie the bull terrier. With a red bandana tied around his neck, the adorable sidekick went out to carry out a special assignment for the closing scene: sniffing out the streets, stairs and corners of St Stephan town in Montenegro. Turns out, Charlie was impressed with what he saw, just as the rest of his human entourage; they dubbed the Adriatic "one of the most delightful coastlines anywhere in the world, to be remembered for its beauty, hospitality and diversity". Almost forty (!) years later, the statement still stands as true.
