Tour Bilogora on Horseback

By 12 September 2018

The Bilogora Horseback Tourist Trail is the first internationally certified equestrian tourism trail in Croatia.

Bjelovar-Bilogora County, the easternmost county of the central Croatia region, stretching across the slopes of Bilogora, Papuka and Moslavina hills, can now be explored on horses. The locals and horses have been joining forces for centuries. They helped them in their everyday work and transport, but today they have a completely new role, reports Večernji List on September 12, 2018.

The best testament to this is 15 equestrian associations, 10 rural tourism farms engaged in horse breeding, who are also active members of the associations, and 198 kilometres of horseback riding trails. The long history of horseback riding in the Bjelovar-Bilogora area is maintained by "Bjelovar Border Guards Hussars 1756” , a historical military unit which performs at numerous events in the country and abroad, and continues the spirit of tradition and military cavalry history of the region.

The county also offers the first Croatian international certified horseback riding trail, Bilogora Horseback Tourist Trail, which is 90 kilometres long and has been certified by the Italian Association of Horse Tourism ENGEA.

The tour includes certified horse riding guides, regardless of whether participants are brave beginners who have never ridden a horse before or advanced riders.

There are some 20 Horses Welcome points, where you can find a rich gastronomic offer of homemade food served in rural houses and wineries with high-quality wines located on the Bilogora Wine Road. Visitors can also visit equestrian clubs, retreats, excursion sites, ethno-houses and other cultural and historical heritage sites which the trail connects. The trail visits mildly hilly landscapes, with quiet streams, fish ponds and dense forests.

More information can be found at the Bjelovar-Bilogora County Tourist Board’s website.
