May 2, 2019 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for new flights to Croatia with updates from Zagreb airport.
Ex Yu Aviation reports that Marija Pejčinović Burić, the Croatian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, is hoping to launch a service between Zagreb and Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, in 2020.
"We expect a continuous rise in the number of Azerbaijani tourists and business people visiting Croatia, and vice versa. Therefore, I believe that next year seasonal direct flights from Baku to Zagreb and other destinations such as Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar or Pula are feasible,” Burić said.
This wouldn’t be the first time the two countries are connected, as back in 2012, AZAL airlines operated a charter service to Split in the summer.
In other news, Ex Yu Aviation reports that the Air Transat service between Toronto and Zagreb, which will resume seasonal operations in two weeks, is a crucial route for the airline. Air Transat expressed that the Croatian market will also remain an elemental part of its network, even though the company is up for sale.
"Croatia remains a key destination for Transat, and in view of the interest shown by Canadian travelers in the summer of 2018 and its potential for tourism development, we will add another connection to Zagreb from Toronto, for a total of three direct flights per week. The flights will take place on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at the height of the season. Customers in Montreal and Vancouver may also benefit from a connection via Toronto from this additional third flight to Croatia. The third link will also offer Zagreb to Calgary customers via a roundtrip connection to Toronto,” the airline said. The Toronto-Zagreb service will run until October 29.
Recall, Air Transat had also announced a Split service this year, though it was canceled in February for commercial and operational reasons. We do not yet know if the service will be initiated for the 2020 season.
There has been a boom in travel between Croatia and Canada, thanks to Air Transat and Air Canada Rouge. Ina Rodin from the Croatian National Tourist Board commented:
"Further growth in travel is expected from Canada to Croatia at around 20% per year. Estimates are based on the recovery of the Canadian economy, the strong contribution of nonstop flights linking Toronto with Zagreb, and general growth in interest for travel to Croatia.”
