ZAGREB, 7 March, 2021 - A national centre for rehabilitation of patients suffering from spinal and spinal cord injuries is being built in the northern Croatian spa of Varaždinske Toplice and the project is worth 112 million kuna.

The purpose of the project, which was presented in Varaždinske Toplice last Thursday, is to provide spinal injury patients with comprehensive assistance and rehabilitation.

The centre is envisaged as part of the Varaždinske Toplice special hospital for medical rehabilitation, which will thus become a place for education and exchange of know-how of local and international experts and scientists.

Of those 112 million kuna, 74% (83 million) is being covered by a non-repayable grant from the European Union's Regional Development Fund, the Croatian Health Ministry has set aside 24 million for this project, whereas the hospital provides five million kuna from its own budget.

The centre is expected to be finished until the end of 2022 H1.

The hospital's director, Denis Kovačić, said last Thursday that this was the only institution for rehabilitation of such type of patients.

Health Ministry State Secretary Tomislav Dulibić said that the future centre would be the flagship institution for the treatment of such patients in this part of Europe.
