Croatian Products Conquering Shops in the United States

By 23 July 2017

More and more Croatian products are available for consumers in the USA.

Many shelves of stores in New York are offering more and more Croatian products in recent months. Compared to last year, the number of products available for American consumers has been significantly increased, reports Index.hr on 23 July 2017.

Since the City of New York has about 8.5 million inhabitants, Index reporters focus their investigation on the Queens neighbourhood. It is home for a large number of Croats, Bosniaks, Serbs and Montenegrins, so the demand for Croatian products is largest precisely in this area. This has been recognised by the store owners themselves (none of whom are from Croatia), who have therefore included numerous Croatian products in their stores.

The reporters first went to the C-Town store, which has the smallest offer of Croatian products among all the surveyed stores. In addition to some Kraš products, it offers Podravka paté, Vegeta, soups, jams and Dolcela puddings. As for price, Podravka's jams in New York cost 3.99 dollars (27 kunas).

In the Trade Fair store, the largest of those which the reporters visited, all Croatian products can be found in a special section. It offers Kraš's wafers (half a kilo is 22 kunas), tea biscuits, and Dorina chocolates. There were also Kestlin's Amarena waffles and Jadro biscuits produced by Karolina from Osijek. Podravka exports the largest range of products, so the shop also offers its cucumbers (60 kunas per jar), paté, beef goulash in cans, Čokolino, Fant spices, soups, Vegeta (a 2 kg Vegeta costs around 107 kunas) and Dolcela puddings. Croatian-produced salt can also be bought there. As far as Franck's products are concerned, its best-known product, coffee, can be found (30 kunas), along with teas (20 kunas). Jamnica natural water is also sold and costs 1.59 dollars (10 kunas).

The Euro Market store offers the largest range of Croatian products. Among Kraš’s products, all types of biscuits are offered, including the most popular brands, Napolitanke, Domaćice and Petit Beurre, as well as various kinds of Dorina chocolates, Bananko chocolates, Bajadere, Životinjsko Carstvo and Kraš Ekspres.

Although Zvečevo filed for pre-bankruptcy proceedings in June and is on the verge of collapse, its Mikado chocolates can still be found on American supermarket shelves. As for Podravka's products, all types of jams and teas are offered, as well as Čokolino, Keksolino, Grisolino and many others. The shop also offers a broad range of Podravka salads, as well as “ajvar”, which costs 30 kunas.

Among Croatian producers in the American market, Podravka and Kraš are the most prominent, with Franck also starting to appear more frequently.
