May 5, 2020 - A Croatia COVID-19 overview of the latest health, travel and stats news on the coronavirus crisis, with live updates in English, powered by Index.hr.
There are currently 2112 officially confirmed Croatia COVID-19 cases and 12 new cases since yesterday afternoon. 1560 patients have recovered. Eighty-three people have died. 14 patients are on ventilators. There are 469 active cases.

Note that koronavirus.hr is now mapping cases by county instead of town/city. Koronavirus.hr will update their map after the 14:00 CET daily press conference.
Index also has a very useful breakdown of cases by town and city. Please note that these numbers may not correspondent to the total number, as the locations of some cases are usually confirmed later. We will update this information as we get it.

More than 248,310 people are dead from the virus, which originated in Wuhan City, China. Over 3,566,979 cases have been confirmed globally. The USA has the highest number of recorded cases (1,188,421) as well as the highest number of deaths (68,602) deaths.

17:00: The City of Rijeka has announced that all tenants of city-owned business premises that have not been banned from work but who suffer damage due to traffic reductions will be able to apply for a rent reduction or exemption.
16:40: The Executive Board of the Croatian Medical Association (HLZ) has decided to award "Ladislav Rakovac" medals to doctors members of the National Civil Protection Headquarters of the Republic of Croatia for special merits in preventing the spread of coronavirus infection.

16:10: A man from Split who was arrested yesterday afternoon on Put Vrborana Street after a half-hour chase in front of police officers in Split has not yet been brought to the ODO Split Police Department on Tuesday until 2 pm and the reason is awaiting the results of the test on COVID-19.
Recall that a police chase happened in Split yesterday afternoon. The chase lasted about half an hour, with fugitives fleeing all over town.
The fugitive shot down a police officer on a motorcycle.
Unofficially, a fugitive hit a police car at the Marjan Tunnel. Witnesses said the fugitive was fleeing the entire city.

15:10: Findings by a dozen health care providers who have been in contact with a patient with COVID-19 who have been treated at the KBC in Firule for the past 15 days should be completed by tonight, Deputy Director of the Split Hospital Anton Marovic told reporters.
14:55: In the past 24 hours in Koprivnica-Križevci County, another person was infected with the coronavirus, and it is a contact with an infected person, said County Chief of Civil Protection Ratimir Ljubić on Tuesday.
At Koprivnica General Hospital, an elderly person from the Koprivnica Nursing Home passed away who was coronavirus positive and suffered from several serious illnesses before the infection.
At present, 42 persons are infected in Koprivnica-Križevci County.
14:50: Interior Minister and Head of the National Civil Protection Headquarters Davor Bozinovic announced Tuesday that sailing hulls longer than 24 meters into Croatian ports are allowed.
Bozinovic specified that yachts can sail to berths in nautical ports and ports are open to public traffic.
In addition, yachts are allowed to enter the shipyards for overhaul or repair, Bozinovic said at a news conference at the National Headquarters.

They are taking in all those contracted patients they had under contract with the HZJZ. If needed, other services will be agreed. We don't think chaos will come, we are all here. Vaccine or cure by fall?
"If we mention that the second wave should be in the fall, there is a lot of research, 71 vaccines are being tested. A lot of drugs, none of them got an efficacy rating, a few days ago, Remdeseivir got it. It has some side effects and some positive effects. Certainly, by fall, they will not be able to get the vaccine or drug tested to be declared 100 percent harmless or effective. There are three stages after which we could say that we had a safe and effective drug or vaccine. In the normal procedure 3, 5, 10 years, in the accelerated procedure one to two years," she added.
Corona at Firule
"We know of this patient who is on the positive list today, and a few days ago we had a positive nurse from that department. There was a virus transmission that made it difficult for that department to work because many people must be in isolation and patients had to be relocated. About sport

As for the recreationalists, we opened playgrounds yesterday, so we can do recreational sports on the football fields. All suggestions are welcome, we cannot know all the activities about how the training is conducted. Yesterday, let's say the community of fitness center owners and I received a very qualitative proposal to consider, but we don't know the date because we have to stick to the stages," Capak said.
About the students
"The university dormitories have to be told about the opening of the dormitories. The recommendations are still valid. I don't know how it will be organized with students who have to practice. We have provided a framework under which this can be maintained," Capak replied.
About playgrounds
"We were unable to communicate that instruction. Hygiene, social distance are paramount. It's hard to come up with instructions for children's playgrounds. I hope we publish those instructions today," Capak said.
"All the playgrounds are open, they can recreationally do their sports on those playgrounds," he added.
About nursing home visits
"Homes have not been able to arrange visits, but outdoor visits could be allowed. We are still fighting to keep the corona out of the homes. We understand that this is very important and frustrating that they cannot be seen. We will talk about it."
Testing instructions for patients
"All of the recommendations will change as the epidemiological situation changes. As we reinforce certain things, we will loosen them. That no one expects to receive instructions for every situation for every patient, medicine is creative, it requires a lot of knowledge ... Measures that we are going to prescribe will not be much more than the standards they normally have to protect themselves," Capak added,
What about elections?
"A very difficult question. We have not discussed it yet. There are a number of activities here, from pre-election rallies to voting ... The epidemiological situation should be favorable. For example, the epidemiological situation is favorable. Tomorrow we expect a smaller number again," Capak said.
About schools and kindergartens

Due to the fact that the hospital system was reactivated from precautionary measures this week, additional tests will be carried out, so that 82 people have been tested in the past 24 hours, and thus, a total of 1569 people so far," said Varaždin County Chief of Civil Protection Staff Robert Vugrin.
12:27: There are no new cases in Vukovar-Srijem
12:15: According to the data of the Zagreb County Institute of Public Health in the territory of Zagreb County, 129 people are coronavirus positive. Compared to yesterday, this is the same number, which means that there are no new patients in Zagreb County for seven days in a row, and five more people have been cured. So far, a total of 87 people have been cured and four have died.
12:00: The City of Zagreb has one newly infected person. A total of 468, they said at the press conference.

Entry into Republic of Croatia
As of midnight on March 19, 2020; crossing the border of the Republic of Croatia is temporarily restricted. Croatian citizens and residents will be allowed to return to Croatia, which means that they may go to the country where they work and reside and must follow the instructions and measures of the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ) upon their return. These measures went into effect at 00:01 on March 19, 2020 and are valid for 30 days. More information and exceptions here.

Social Distancing Measures Implemented
Also as of March 19, 2020; it is compulsory to strictly adhere to anti-epidemic measures and strict social distance measures. A strict measure of social distance requires avoiding close personal contact at a distance of at least:
- Two (2) meters indoors
- One (1) meter outdoors
The anti-epidemic measures required according to this decision include a ban on holding all public events, gatherings of more than 5 people in one place and the suspension of all retail and trade activities. 14:35: "When the first cases came up, we reacted quickly, establishing diagnostics quickly. The Ministry of Health responded immediately by creating plans, we started preparing measures, training, purchasing equipment.

If we continue to stick to the measures in this way, then we will be ready and more prepared than some other parts of the world," Markotic said when asked about the second wave of the epidemic.
14:30: The Croatian Chamber of Economy (HGK) on Monday asked the Civil Protection Headquarters to relax measures applied to drivers in international road freight transport, as well as to start driving schools.
At the request of the members of the Road Freight Association, the HGK proposes that quarantine and home isolation measures for international drivers be carried out under the same conditions as drivers in domestic transport.
According to the regulations currently in force, the driver must not leave the house or the accommodation in which they carry out self-isolation, except in the case of an invitation from the employer to carry out the transport, HGK said in a statement.
On their return from a foreign country, a new cycle of self-isolation begins to flow, and it may take up to a month, in some cases more, to change the cycle of driving and staying in isolation in that regime.
HGK Vice President for Construction, Transport and Communications Mirjana Cagalj said drivers had no symptoms of illness, so the Chamber believes that they should be allowed to go to the store and pharmacy and have a limited stay outside the home, as well as other citizens.
14:23: "A report from a returnee from Germany has arrived and he is positive for the SARS-Cov-2 virus. We now have five patients with this contagious disease in the Sisak-Moslavina County area," Staff said.
14:10: Due to the development of the coronavirus pandemic and the need for accommodation, since March, the Zagreb Arena has been reorganized into a hospital for coronavirus sufferers. Today, the assembly of 300 beds out of 750 in the Arena space has begun, and they are being prepared to be transported to the Civil Protection Warehouse.
The cleaning and laying of the beds is performed by the members of the State Civil Protection Unit of the Zagreb Civil Protection Directorate.

About returnees, where will the tests be done?
"We have noticed developments that do not contribute to our epidemiological picture. Our goal is to increase security and the experts will find a legal framework," Beros said.
"The testing will not take effect yet. The issue of crossing the border is complex," Bozinovic added.
About schools
"It is difficult for me to answer that question. Our intention was for us to protect our health, we are not Sweden, we have 3 or 4 generations in the house. How will this be done, how will hygiene be conducted if there is no soap, we cannot answer these questions. The basic direction of our instructions is very similar to those in other countries, they are a little more detailed. If we did not succeed, we will try to clarify, we also have a ministry there. We are behind the measures," Capak said.
About truck drivers
"We are aware of no one's situation as it was. It is certain that some businesses are more affected than others. We are taking care of that. This applies to health and the police as well ... When it comes to truck drivers, we have regular contact with their representatives and exchange views. Tomorrow we will have another meeting. We are aware of the problems and difficulties. They are one of the essentials in this crisis. We are grateful to them, we are counting on them. We will democratically have the right to protest, I am sure they recognize that they have an interlocutor in this headquarters and that we are trying to find a solution that is easier for them, but due to the fact that they come from an area where the negative image is we're going to have to put it all on the table."
Does Croatia have plans for a second wave of infection?
"Croatia managed to defend itself in the first wave when there was nothing but knowledge and quick reaction. When the first cases came up, we recognized immediately and reacted quickly, establishing all the epidemic measures. Today, some 5 months after the world found out about this new virus and some have ignored it and laughed at it, we did not, so we can be pleased with what has been done. It turns out that we have a problem, that a new focal point is opening, we can prescribe a stricter measure, which is an obligation to wear masks," Capak said.
"I am sure that in the coming period this awareness of the citizens will help to prevent the spread of the virus. We are mostly talking about recommendations and this has proven to be right. We are counting on Croatian citizens, so far we are counting on the future," Bozinovic said.

About Istria
"It would be best if for a certain period of time, at least two weeks, that we do not have new cases. How would it be estimated that we are going into increasing indulgence? It is not just a matter of us. We have our people living outside .. We have said repeatedly. the coronavirus has shown that it cannot be good at one time and the others will not. The whole world will have to be cleaned up, so that we too can be sure that everything is good. If we can bring ourselves to zero, like Istria now, we can do a lot. But only when the whole world is released from the corona, will we be able to be sure that there will be no new problems," said Markotic.
About theaters and masses, where is the epidemiological reason?
"No one ever said that the mass was epidemiologically more acceptable than the theater. No one ever claimed that. If I did, I apologize. All of us now have an afterthought and it helped us a lot. We did not have some kind of recipe, we were developing this strategy on the run, you remember that after the invention of this test in Berlin, we started applying it in Croatia. From the present point of view, one can ask that," Beros said.
"I ask the elderly to be patient."
"It is very important, I would like to remind you that the extremely high risk of severe illness is a high age. In nursing homes where a lot of people live, it is extremely important that they continue to be cared for. We see a lot of older people being outside, but I have to warn them. "Would I like to expose myself in this way?" I ask the elderly to be patient, to go to the shops in a similar way to others," said Markotic.
About student exercises
"We have created an epidemiological framework for student exercises. Some colleges cannot be completed without exercises and we have made it possible," Capak said.

The Split State Attorney's Office is opening an investigation at the infected Nursing Home
Health Minister Vili Beros and Social Policy Minister Vesna Bedekovic presented a consolidated inspection report of their ministries at the Nursing Home in Split, according to which there were no omissions in the treatment of health professionals, and workers and users of the House adhered to epidemiological instructions. Markotic: Temperature alone cannot be the only reason to suspect a coronavirus
The Head of Infectious Diseases Clinic Fran Mihaljevic commented on the reason why the infection of the coronavirus was not suspected in the residents of the Nursing Home in Split because of the temperature.
