The renowned American singer-songwriter Cat Power will perform at Tvornica Kulture in Zagreb on September 9 in her debut Croatian performance.
Charlyn Marie “Chan” Marshall, better known as Cat Power, is an American musician, actress, and occasional model, with the stage name “Cat Power”, a name inherited from her first band.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Marshall was first discovered in 1994 by Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar. A solo artist then, Marshall was performing ahead of Liz Phair, and later received the help of Shelley and Foljahn to record her first two albums ("Dear Sir" and "Myra Lee").
Matador Records then signed Marshall in 1996, after which she published her third album, "What Would the Community Think”. Marshall’s global breakthrough came in 1998 with the release of her critically acclaimed album "Moon Pix". “The Covers Record” came out shortly after in 2000, and after a brief 3 year hiatus, Marshall released "You Are Free", a collaboration with Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl. Marshall’s next album "The Greatest" was released in 2006 - a soul influenced album featuring Memphis studio musicians.
After another covers album titled “Jukebox” in 2008, Marshall’s breakthrough, self-produced album “Sun” opened at number 10 on the Billboard 200 - her highest charting album of her career (so far).
Cat Power’s sound is constantly evolving, and has been likened to that of punk, blues, folk, and soul - her album “Sun” even has electronic notes.
Her lyrics bring you through absolute isolation and the daily struggle to survive, to confidently looking back on your past and rising above to your future.
Cat Power is exciting, emotional, charismatic, and incredibly talented - known as one of the top 10 world’s most important singer-songwriters in the last 20 years. Compared to the impactful Fiona Apple, Cat Power is adored by audiences and critics of independent music, and has influenced generations of younger musicians, both worldwide and in Croatia.
This will be Cat Power’s first appearance in Croatia, and a great one to open the autumn concert season in Zagreb.
