The new Hotel Belvedere in Dubrovnik is planned to be built on the ruins of the former hotel that was destroyed during the Siege of Dubrovnik during the War of Independence in 1991. The new hotel will have only 50 rooms, all of which will be above the five-star category.
Russian billionaire Viktor Velkseberg purchased the ruins of the former Hotel Belvedere for 12.5 million euros. The Dubrovnik City Council have approved the city planning for the hotel area on Friday. Vekselberg wishes to build a new Hotel Belvedere that is ultra luxurious - it will also be 150 rooms smaller than the old hotel.
The new Hotel Belvedere will be designed by popular architectural studio 3LHD, owned by Dubrovnik architect Marko Dabrović, who won the contest in which 30 architects from around the world applied to design this hotel.
The hotel will be almost invisible from the historic old town of Dubrovnik, and rooms, all with sea view, will be up to 10 meters wide. The reception area will be located on the road from the hotel which will be connected by cable car, and a Belvedere boat service will be connected with the historic city center and the fine dining Restaurant 360, which is also owned by Russian magnate.
“We plan to make a lightweight structure, essentially like a house in a park. We want to keep the look of what traditionally exists in the city, and those are the summer residences. There will be a funicular, villas and apartments, indoor and outdoor pools, and great attention will be paid to the exterior and green spaces,” as presented to the city council by architect Marko Dabrović.
