Tourist Activity: How Does the Croatian Population Like to Travel?

In 2015, 1.6 million or 42.9% of the Croatian population aged 15 and over took at least one private overnight trip, states the data of the Central Bureau for Statistics (DZS) released today, 27 October, 2016. The total generated number of private trips was 5.7 million, of which 3.6 million (63.5%) were in Croatia, and 2.1 million (36.5%) were abroad.

So, where do Croats mostly travel?

 

Croats travel most to Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the main motive for travel is to visit relatives and friends.

 

Croatians travel abroad most to Italy (19.7% travel), followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina (18.3%), Austria (10.2%), Germany (9.9%) and Slovenia (7.5%). When looking at their length of stay, 2.8 million trips (49.2%) were shorter, and 2.9 million (50.8%) were longer. The most common motives for going on private multi-day trips were to visit relatives and friends (1.9 million trips, or 33%). The rest of the trips were taken for a vacation on the sea (1.6 million trips, or 29.2%) or in the city (471,000 trips or 8.3%).

 

The Croatian population achieved a total of 37.6 million overnight stays for private trips, of which 22.2 million overnight stays (59%) were accounted for in Croatia, and 15.4 million (41%) on trips abroad. The average stay of one single trip was around 6.6 nights, while a trip within Croatia achieved an average of 6.2 nights and a trip abroad lasted around 7.5 nights. 16.7 million or 44.4% stayed in unpaid accommodation facilities with family or friends.

 

What about private and business overnight trips in 2015?

 

The total expenditure on private trips with overnight stays amounted to 10.3 billion kuna, of which 4.0 billion (39.2%) was spent in Croatia, and 6.3 billion (60.8%) abroad. The average cost per trip amounted to 1,820 kuna. Around 2.8 billion (27.3%) was spent on short trips while 7.5 billion (72.7%) was for longer journeys. For shorter trips, 1,010 kuna was spent on average, and 2,602 kuna was spent on longer journeys.

 

When looking at the total population of Croatia aged 15 and over, 2.1 million or 57.1% of them did not go on private overnight trips in 2015. The most common reasons for not going on private, overnight trips had multiple answers including: lack of financial resources (69.5%), health reasons (20.8%), lack of free time due to family commitments (18.2%) and lack of free time for business (11.6%).

 

In 2015, 355,000 inhabitants, or 9.8% of the Croatian population aged 15 and over went on at least one business or professional trip with overnight stays. A total of 964,000 business or professional trips were calculated in which 452,000 of the trips (46.9%) were in Croatia, and 512,000 (53.1%) were abroad. When calculating the length of stay, 653,000 trips (67.7%) were short stays and 311,000 (32.3%) were longer.

 

In 2015, the Croatian population aged 15 years or more recorded 9.8 million of one-day trips, of which 8.4 million (86.2%) were private, and 1.3 million (13.8%) were business.
