A week-long festival dedicated to the ancient tradition of salt production starts today in Ston.
The first Festival of Salt, dedicated to the ancient tradition of salt production, starts today and will be held from August 27 until September 2, 2017, at the Ston salt pans, reports Dubrovački Vjesnik, on August 27, 2017.
The idea of creating the festival was inspired by the significance of salt in the history of the area; the Dubrovnik Republic owed much of its wealth and progress to the production and trade of salt, among other things. Ston Solana, unchanged since the 14th century, was the strategic economic point of the Dubrovnik Republic, while today it is an important economic entity and a unique cultural monument and tourist attraction.
