Thanks to its growing popularity and success, Backo Mini Express is expanding and will soon become the fifth largest railway model in the Europe, reports MojZagreb.info on October 13, 2017.
Backo Mini Express, the largest railroad model in Southeast Europe, located in 4 Gundulićeva Street, has become one of the most recognizable tourist attractions in the Croatian capital in only two years of its existence. Early childhood dreams of the model maker, Antun Urbić Backo, who played with trains in the attic of his family home decades ago, have transformed into reality. Five years of hard work of constructing a small-scale model of railroads, trains, cars, people and the city of Zagreb has paid off - nowadays, this tourist attraction is luring in visitors coming from Croatia and neighbouring countries as well as from Germany, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, Brazil, China, the US, Australia etc.
Immediately after having been opened, two years ago, Backo Mini Express earned the title of the largest model of its kind in the Southeast Europe. Thanks to its popularity, Backo Mini Express is planning to increase in size thus becoming the fifth largest railway model in Europe (not just the region). Backo Mini Express is the result of a labour-intensive work of five Zagreb residents, who have created a truly special tourist rarity, which is almost entirely made in Croatia from Croatian material (85 percent Croatian product). The railway model covers 75 square meters and has more than 100 model trains running around on more than 1-kilometre-long miniature tracks.
"Backo Mini Express is currently being updated, we are adding features and extending it for an additional 250 square meters, which will make it the fifth largest model in Europe,” said Antun Urbić Backo, the owner and the leader of the Backo Mini Express project. The new updated railway model will have many interesting new features, such as an elevator shaft, which will be used for lifting the trains between the levels.
With the support of the Zagreb Tourist Board, Backo Mini Express has been participating in the Advent project in Zagreb with its holiday programme for the last two years.
You can visit the Backo Mini Express at 5 Gunduliceva Street every day (except Sunday) from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The admission fee is 20 kunas for adults and 15 for kids.
