Croatian Singer’s Song Selected by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

By 6 November 2017

Important recognition for Zdenka Kovačiček.

Zdenka Kovačiček, a true legend of Croatian music, has received a major recognition from the global fashion industry. Her song “Elektra” from 1978 will be featured in the exclusive album of the prestigious fashion house Chanel, after it was selected as accompanying music for Karl Lagerfeld’s 2018 spring/summer fashion collection, reports Jutarnji List on November 6, 2017.

The exclusive music album featuring 14 songs which were used at Lagerfeld's October show will be available at Chanel's stores. The limited edition will be released in just a thousand copies.

“My phone is constantly ringing. I'm delighted with the reactions, especially because I've never been very involved in fashion. I rarely ever attended fashion shows. But, I was impressed with Chanel's clothes and with my friends who had them. Who knows, maybe they'll give me a piece of Chanel clothing as a present now,” said 73-year-old Zdenka Kovačiček comically, adding that she knew Elektra was ahead of its time.

“This is an electronic song; my vocals appear at the very end. And at that very moment, Karl Lagerfeld appeared on the runway. I wrote the song with Igor Savin in 1976, and it seems to me that it was not understood at the time. It was too early for such music,” says the legendary singer.

She believes that Lagerfeld found her Elektra thanks to the recently released Croatia Records album “Electronic Jugoton”. It was only a few days ago that she learned the song would be featured on the exclusive Chanel album.

“I believe he liked the song because it is a great background for his models. He used disco music throughout the show and was looking for something unknown, something that people would not immediately associate with another event, but just with his clothes and the fashion show. With electronic music, Lagerfeld wants to bring his creations closer to younger generations, and I think he is doing that very well,” says Kovačiček.

Also winning over fashion enthusiasts, she is busy preparing for a concert in the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall on 29 November, marking 60 years of her music career. She has also recently received the Elle Style Award for lifetime achievement, and on that occasion, she said she was always ahead of her time and that her time obviously came just now.

“I'm proud of the song which was considered avant-garde at that time, but now takes its place on the limited Chanel album. I've never dreamed of such success,” concludes Kovačiček.
