A Nightmare on Tourist Street: Infrastructure Gone Rogue

By 8 January 2018

A certain street in Kaštel Štafilić might very well become a tourist attraction - and it has a name to match

A curious photograph popped up on Twitter earlier today, reports Telegram on January 8, 2018.

The image shows a narrow alley passing between stone townhouses and counting no less than twenty manholes scattered over a short distance of approximately ten metres. While anyone's first thought might be 'photoshopped', once you spend enough time living in Croatia, you'll come to a sad conclusion that any example of urban planning gone wrong is probably authentic. It's less likely that someone wasted 10 minutes of their time altering an image than a certain street actually being covered in dozens of manholes.

The photo is indeed authentic, and even though the Twitter user who first posted it claimed it was taken in Kaštel Novi, the street is actually located in Kaštel Štafilić near Split. Named Tourist Street (Turistička ulica), the alley is notorious for its bizarre infrastructure: a total of 118 manholes on a distance of 90 metres. There's sewage, drainage, telecommunication cables... It's hard to imagine what the ensemble looks like underground.

To make the case even better, the mind-boggling pattern makes it possible for any driver in passing to feel like a music composer for a couple of seconds. Take a look at the following video (sound on), and you'll see why:

We can't really fathom the thought process behind this glorious display of metal, but there's at least one upside to this awkward infrastructure plan: taking comfort in the fact that you don't live in any of the adjacent houses. It must be a nightmare.
