Split Sailing Championship Gathers 70 Competitors in Optimist Class

By 5 March 2018

Young sailors meet in Split.

Over the weekend, the Split Open Sailing Championship for the Optimist class was held at the Bay of Kaštela. It was the qualifying regatta for young sailors from the Southern region. A total of 70 sailors took part in the competition. In addition to Croatian athletes from sailing clubs from Zadar to Dubrovnik, the regatta also included six sailors from the Delfin Sailing Club from Kotor in Montenegro.

Unfortunately, the organisers from the Split Sailing Club were not lucky with weather conditions. Due to the lack of wind, the competition was shortened from three to just one day, when the southern wind of 10 to 15 knots in strength enabled sailing. Only three races were held, after which Lovre Bakotić from the Split Sailing Club was the best, followed by two female sailors: Nora Copić from the Split Sailing Club and Noela Petešić from the Uskok Sailing Club.

The Croatian championship for senior and junior sailors in Olympic classes will also be held in Split. The regatta is scheduled for 15-19 March, organised by the Mornar Sailing Club.
