Art Faces: Unique Floral Portraits in Bloom All Over Zagreb

May 10, 2018 - Art Park and Floraart teamed up and filled the streets of downtown Zagreb with unique floral artwork

If you were to take a stroll through the centre of Zagreb these days, you'd notice a handful of new residents in the public space, new faces that have appeared almost overnight. There's a lady lost in thought, her locks lush and green; a cool-looking bearded guy sporting pilot sunglasses and a wild mane; an elderly gent resembling a forest creature...

These little masterpieces, brought to life with colour and greenery, are actually a lovely artistic announcement of the upcoming Floraart, the renowned international horticultural exhibition taking place in Zagreb each year.

The artwork was created by Boris Bare, a street artist from Zagreb who we have to thank for the Art Park project. Once an abandoned parcel of land tucked away in the city centre, the park has transformed into one of the most beloved social hotspots in Zagreb that are hidden from plain sight. A secret garden, filled with art interventions, attractive programmes and activities that take place in the Art Park each summer, with this year's edition set to begin by the end of this month and last through September.

"I've never done anything like this before, which is why I find great delight in it. This is only the beginning of Art Park and Floraart's collaboration. Throughout the manifestation, we'll have our own Art Park zone at Bundek, with good music and a space for people to hang out. We'll invite artists to join us and continue creating works of street art that unite art and plants. It'll be really interesting to see what will come to life, what kind of ideas will be popping up", Bare said.

The 53rd edition of Floraart will take place at Bundek lake from May 28 to June 3. Spanning over 300.000 square metres in the open air and an additional 2.000 m2 indoors, the biggest international flower fair in this part of Europe will certainly be a delight for the visitors. Just like every other year, you'll be able to buy flowers and plants at discounted prices, but Floraart is much more than an open green market. The organisers prepared a programme featuring interesting lectures and workshops, several plays and performances, and music events. Floraart will also involve a couple of competitions: the Croatian Floristry Cup, a contest for the most beautiful home garden in the city of Zagreb and Zagreb County, an international flower-arranging competition for high school students, and those exhibitors who apply their booth to a contest for the most beautiful exhibition space will also qualify to win attractive prizes.
