Žabac Food Outlet Wins Major Award, Right Behind Alibaba

By 9 October 2018

The first prize in the competition went to the Chinese giant.

The first Croatian food outlet Žabac has recently won, as a retail concept, the second place at Euromonitor's New Concepts in Retailing competition in the Grocery category, reports Index.hr on October 9, 2018.

Euromonitor International is a global market research firm whose activities are based in the areas of consumer goods, B2B and service industries.

Žabac Food Outlet took second place in spite of strong competition from 80 countries and won the title of the most interesting idea in the Croatian retail market.

In the past year, Žabac Food Outlet opened a new store in the Trešnjevka neighbourhood in Zagreb, which includes self-service dispensers for detergents and draught beer. Together with the introduction of these machines for liquid products, Žabac has continued its journey towards a higher degree of social responsibility by employing people from the Centre for Inclusive Work Activities.

In general, the concept of the food outlet is based on an idea which enables the purchase of good quality products at very low outlet prices, which has now been further proven with the Euromonitor's award.

The first place in the competition was won by Tao Cafe (Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.) from China, while the third was The Foodary (Caltex Australia Ltd.) from Australia.

Žabac sells surplus merchandise produced in factories, food in broken packaging and near expiration merchandise. Products can be bought at up to 90% discount. One of the founders said that they got the idea when they saw how much food is being thrown away on a daily basis.
