Vis Island Nominated for Best European Film Location for Mamma Mia 2

By 9 November 2018

Vis island, where the summer blockbuster hit ‘Mama Mia! Here We Go Again’ was filmed, has been nominated for this year's European Film Location Award for the best film location in Europe.

The award, which highlights the diversity and beauty of European landscapes, will be given for the second time. The award is organized by the European Film Commissions Network (EUFCN), which has 90 members from 30 countries that promote European sites and the film industry, including the Croatian Audiovisual Center, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on November 8, 2018.

The award was given for the first time last year to mark the 10th anniversary of the network’s operations, and was won by the city of Görlitz as the location for Wes Andreson's ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’. The award is carried out in cooperation with Cineuropa, where you can vote online until November 30th.

"The success of the first European Film Location Award has prompted us to turn the award into an annual edition, and this year we have 12 beautiful locations that have played important roles in films and TV series shot in 2017," said EUFCN President Truls Kontny, expressing the conviction that the award further contributes to the recognizability of Europe across the globe.

As is stated on the Cineuropa website:

“Vis is one of the most beautiful islands in the Adriatic Sea, and it is the furthest from the coast and the most enigmatic of all the inhabited Croatian islands. It spent much of its recent history serving as a Yugoslav military base, cut off from foreign visitors from the 1950s right up until 1989. This isolation preserved the island and its authenticity. Vis plays the key part in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again film, where It stars as fictional island Kalokairi, and is represented as a paradise island.”

The island of Vis will compete against  the Tabernas desert in Almería, Spain, where they recorded the film "The Sisters Brothers", the Innsbruck Old Town ("Tiger Zinda Hai"), the financial center of Frankfurt ("Bad Banks"), the Greek island of Corfu (“The Durrells"), the Italian Lake Carezza ("The Girl in the Fog”), the Maltese Fortress St. Elmo - National Museum of War in Valletta ("Murder on the Orient Express”),  the Calanchi Valley in Viterbo, Italy ("Happy as Lazzaro”), the Brussels Hotel Metropole ("The Happy Prince") - where more than 20 films have been filmed over the past ten years - the Teide National Park in Tenerife, Spain ("Yucatan"), the Michaelerplatz in Vienna, Austria ("Red Sparrow”) and the Preikestolen, The Pulpit Rock - Forsand in Norway, an impressive tourist attraction where the film “Mission: Impossible - Fallout” was filmed.
