Young Croatian Inventors Create Firefighting Robot

Two high school students with plenty of ideas.

“Some children think about love, some about hate, some about school, and we think about ideas that could improve the world we live in,” says young innovator Aryan Ghiassi, a student of the first grade of the Nova Gradiška Secondary School, reports Večernji List on December 18, 2017.

Aryan and his two years older friend Boris Lasković are among those people who can do almost anything they imagine. A robot firefighter, a solar heater and a wave model are just some of their inventions. At this stage, these are still just toys and serve to encourage other children to become interested in similar endeavours, but with further refinement and imagination, they could be turned into great and profitable inventions.

Both have been interested in robotics, electrical engineering and renewable energy sources since a young age. They developed some of the inventions by themselves, while for others they had the help of their friends and physics professors Goran Ruškan.

“Nonrenewable energy sources are being increasingly consumed and will eventually disappear. People need to understand that the world is changing and that we must constantly strive towards innovations. We have made most of the inventions ourselves,” says Boris, a future student of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb.

Visitors of the Days of Technical Culture which were recently held in Nova Gradiška were particularly interested in a firefighting robot. It works on the principle of any other robot, but its electric motors are driven by a special sensor towards the fire. When it detects the source of the flame, it starts extinguishing it with a propeller. The wave model shows a water particle which moves like a wave, while the solar radiator, which won the first award at the national environmental protection competition, serves for heating air in greenhouses. They coloured the tubes in black because that colour attracts light, while the structure is white to reflect the light and thus obtain maximum efficiency.

They inherited their love for innovations from their fathers, and they say most of their ideas usually come “during the shower.” Sometimes people ask them why are they “playing with wires” while their peers are chasing girls. They reply that inventions, as opposed to girls, can at least be controlled.

Their message to their friends is that the most important thing is to work with passion and be persistent. “It is interesting to see something which you have made with your own hands and not bought in a shop. Just the idea that one day perhaps our name could be written in history as people who have helped the world is enough for us to persevere,” concluded Aryan.
