Not many people heading for the beach today in Croatia...
Heavy rains which had been falling throughout the day yesterday have caused great flooding in Vodice. On city streets, the water level rises up to half a meter in height, with many private houses and restaurants being flooded. The seriousness of the situation is demonstrated by the fact that the Civil Protection forces in Vodice have been put on alert. According to the forecast, it is expected that the weather situation will improve during the day, reports Index.hr on October 15, 2015.
There are problems in Šibenik as well, where water torrents have dislodged heavy cobblestones near Poljana area. Dolac and Baldekin areas have also been flooded. Water has caused extensive damage in the city, with waterfalls flowing down the Gorica area. In Zaton, the sea level on the waterfront has risen by 30 centimetres. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
"At this moment, I simply cannot tell you how many emergency call we have received, since phones are literally ringing every few seconds. People are mostly calling us due to their basements being flooded", said the County Emergency Services Centre.
Some areas are without electricity, with part of the consumers being deliberately cut off from the electrical network due to high water levels. Rogoznica was without electricity for two hours, due to a technical malfunction which has since been repaired.
The extent of damage will be determined during the day. Fortunately, the rain had eased a bit. The authorities have recommended to citizens to boil the tap water before drinking it. Heavy rains have flooded the island of Murter as well, which is cut off from the mainland since the road is currently under water.
Heavy rains are threatening other parts of Croatia as well. During the night, the levels of rivers Kupa and Kupa at Karlovac rose by 17 centimetres per hour, with Kupa reaching the water level of 698 centimetres and Korana of 650 centimetres. It is expected that the official flood protection measures will be introduced during the day. The rains during the night were abundant, so the water levels will probably continue to rise. Karlovac is already preparing for possible flooding. A completely new embankment has been built, which they hope will help in the defence of the city from the four local rivers.
It is expected that weather in Croatia today will be mostly cloudy, sometimes with rain. The heaviest rains are expected on the Adriatic coast and areas along the coast, with significant amounts of rain possible also in parts of central Croatia. The maximum temperatures will be between 12 to 17 degrees Celsius inland, and between 18 and 23 degrees on the Adriatic coast.
