ZAGREB, 12 October, 2021 - The number of deaths in Croatia in 2020 was by more than 5,000 higher than in 2019, and the fourth leading cause of death was COVID-19, which claimed 4,478 lives, the Croatian Public Health Institute (HZJZ) said on Monday. A total of 57,023 people died in Croatia last year, which is 5,229 more people than in 2019, the HZJZ said. The most frequent cause of death in 2020 were diseases of the circulatory system, with 22,817 deaths, followed by cancer, which caused 13,508 deaths.
